Excellent lesson. This is why I love the French bow so much. The hand mechanics with German bow a much different. The arm has no choice but to modulate up/down for each string. Octaves with German bow illustrate this difference. As for etudes that would address this bow technique refinement, check out "storch-hrabe 57 studies vol. 1" etude #9.

Thank you so much! It's very instructive. I really have problems with my shoulder because of the bad grip of the bow.

Thank you! Do you play with a French bow grip? I will try to make a video about the bow grip soon. I’ve got a video called “a free body for bass players” that might help with you shoulder meanwhile.

@ Thank you for your answer, yes I play with the french bow grip. I am going to watch your video.

Very interesting, I wish you had just played open strings for the demo.

Do you think it would be clearer if it was demonstrated on open strings only?
@lanebrain552 жыл бұрын
Yes , over all four strings. The vibrato is not needed.
It's a current struggle of mine! That plus what feels like a sudden change in my left hand shape makes for a sound I don't like. I'm having to step back and slowly visualize what left hand shape and bow position should be.

Dear Sam, I’m so glad to hear this from you and that you’re sharing it with your students! I’ve seen you play Bach and it was truly inspiring! I currently work in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in southwest Finland and this is our bass room. I thought it was a fitting seating for a double bass education video :)

+ALESSANDRO MAMBRINI Originally it was written for violin, not viennese violone.

+Michał Bylina originally it was for violone, sperger was a double bassist cmposer
@michabylina99918 жыл бұрын
miguelj296 You're not right this time. This particular sonata is a transcription made by R. Malarić from Sperger's sonatas for violin. Yes, the other sonatas for double bass were for viennese violone.
@miguelj2968 жыл бұрын
+Michał Bylina do you have a trusted source that you got the info
@michabylina99918 жыл бұрын
+miguelj296 There is no manuscript including violone for this piece. But all of the movements do exist in Sperger's various sonatas for violin. The sonata for double bass is a compilation from violin. Malarić did the same with so-called Dittersdorf Sonata for double bass and piano.
