I'm cheapskate so I bought 10 years ago a brand new Boxster S with all options, off the lot with $8k discount. It wasn't a cheap car, but I have fun driving it. Much more fun than my previous car Lexus SC430. With that in mind I would like to thank a dick salesman of Audi San Diego. I was planning on buying R8, but I was treated like a loser I am so I walked next door and bought Boxster S. Not as flashy , but much better deal and it still runs like new. I saved about $60k.

Smart move. I've owned one Audi and will never own another after getting up close and personal to the poor engineering, R&D, etc. Under the skin they aren't even close to the Porsche, which has always surprised me considering they all come from the same parent company.

@@jeffrichardsoncardiy In my case it was just a dumb luck. I never liked Porsche and especially look of dashboards, but 981 looked good to me. This might be a trivial thing to some, but from the driver seat it's the most you will ever see. I'll keep your channel in my back pocket, it might come handy very soon. So far I only had to change the front hood gas struts, re-glue a rear view mirror and re-glue a small second hand of the clock. My roof is now two stage opening and closing process. It looks like microswitches will be my next Porsche project. Not a big deal. Cheers!

What great content. A long time ago, I had a long discussion with an experienced watchmaker. He showed me his workshop and all of his amazing gadgets, including an acoustic oscilloscope to diagnose by sound. He informed me that the Bulova brand was of exact same quality under the hood as a rolex. I had my heart set on a rolex, so i pushed him. Reliability? Robustness? Materials? Water resistance? He then went on to list parameters i hadn't thought of and then showed me. I was young and naive and was astounded but this a is normal industrial marketing fact. Badge premium is a thing.

Love your video. There’s always a price to pay for every solution. When a horizontally bolted together multi part contraption is hung by the ends there’s tension pulling the parts apart at the bottom of the contraption. I’ve had two 914’s with transmission seal leak. Luckily, due to the easy access, replacement was a half day DIY affair.

Cool video. “Best” is subjective, though. ZF is DAMN good, but personally I like the Getrag 7DCL750. It’s not proprietary to any specific manufacturer, so technical information is readily available. It’s also the only DCT I’ve ever had apart, so I’m biased of course.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy4 күн бұрын
Definitely subjective. I've never touched one of the Getrag boxes and the lack of information and parts for the ZF transmission is frustrating. Something I'm on a mission to do something about. But from what I've seen online the Getrag transmissions seem to have so many issues, whilst the ZF box seems to have little of these and is pretty simple to fix.

Sad to see them brake down a lot on the range sensors and pressure sensors. We replace those sensors almost daily. And 95% low mileage cars so yeah not that reliable in my opinion for a brand like that. Also Porsche tells customers sorry we can't replace the sensors you have to buy a new transmission.

The first Porsche car was produced in 1948 and was based on a VW Beetle that Hitler stole from the Czechoslovak Tatra. It's a timeless design and to say it's German is like saying the origin of Ford is Zimbabwe. Do you know if construction on the older 987 series is comparable? They get a little bit more affordable nowadays in Germany. Prices for the 981 are still really high. Have fun with you car and learning all about the technology.

I can't see that the older models would be too different but I've never had my hands on one. I'd be steering clear of the 987.1 due to the known engine problems and go for a 987.2 that has an engine of similar design to the 981.

The pencil steering rack is every bit as clever as the Porsche engineering. Complaints against German manufacturers arises not so much from the engineering but reliability/quality of components, complexity, failure by service department of the brands unable to fix faults, snobbish attitudes, reluctance to help the customer and excessive repair bills. These high repair/maintenance costs make stupid owners take ridiculous short cuts which ends up ruining the car, the makers reputation and the experience for the next owner. Everything is so profit driven (pun not intended) it is sickening.

I just did this and I must have done something wrong. My panels are securely glued as per instructions, but that 5mm curve didn’t set properly. Mine followed the line of the hard plastic interior and now sticks up about 5mm. Any ideas what I did wrong? The hard plastic piece seems to have warped also.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy9 күн бұрын
It could be the plastic being warped. I've heard people talk of this, where heat warps the plastic shell. I've not seen it, but I've heard that people have corrected it by heating with a heat gun bending back into place.

Hi jeff ! Very useful information in there ! If I am not mistaken you do not discussed why you did not replace the PDK pan/filter. It's by far the most expensive bit so I am very much inerested in your comment about this choice. Thanks in advance !
@jeffrichardsoncardiy9 күн бұрын
The filter is a very coarse fibrous type that is designed to last for the transmission lifetime and will only catch really large bits. It's the same filter type that is used on a standard auto. I used to change them regularly but when cutting them open they were always empty. The wear particles in the clutch section will be either ferrous and caught by the magnets in the pan, or they are from the friction disks. These will continue to circulate in the fluid and not be caught by the filter. I have recently revived an old E36 BMW with 360,000 km on the clock. I did a full transmission service including the filter. The oil was like grey soup with none of the material in this being caught by the filter, and the magnet in the pan was thick with ferrous sludge. I cut open the filter to see what was inside. I counted 6 tiny pieces of metal in the filter in total, so it was basically empty. Don't know if it was the original filter, but it had certainly been in there for a long time. For me changing the fluid regularly is really important for a whole raft of reasons, but the filter is in my opinion a waste of time.

It's not something I have experience with as I don't need to upgrade. I'd be scouring the forums for info on what you need to code.

Jeff - I have a bad front BCM and I bought a used one - can I copy the information from the original BCM and paste it into the one I purchased - using the PIWIS II?
@jeffrichardsoncardiy10 күн бұрын
Unfortunately not. This definitely needs to go to the dealership and have all the keys and other control units like the DME, rear BCM coded so they talk to each other. The front BCM is the heart of the anti theft system so it's made to be very difficult to just copy and paste. I'm not even sure if an old control unit can be recoded by the dealership rather than a brand new one. I'd be very interested to know if it can be done.
