Fantastic video! You just saved me the $700 (US) that Pedro's upholstery shop wanted to charge. I used 3M 08061 (available on Amazon) as a replacement glue. My advice is to go slow and if, when reinstalling, something doesn't feel right, stop, and start over. Dont force anything. Pedro also tried to scare me something would break, but there is almost nothing to break. Sorry, Pedro- I'm sure we shale meet again!

Thanks Jeff. As mine is still under extended warranty I’m going to see whether Porsche will do the fix. Interestingly, when I raised this in casual conversation with a Porsche centre service manager, he expressed the opinion (which I disagreed with) that the problem was caused by people gripping the sill when opening and closing the door while getting into and out of the vehicle!
@jeffrichardsoncardiy10 ай бұрын
I'd be pushing hard to get it replaced, but that being said the fix isn't a hard one. Personally I thing the holding of the sill doesn't have much to do with this issue, but is the cause of the perforations at the end breaking.
@1957robertjohnson10 ай бұрын
The problem with replacement is the problem is reoccurring. The replacement panel uses the same insufficient adhesive as the original.
@stephenfoster694010 ай бұрын
@@1957robertjohnson I was hoping that Porsche might have upgraded the adhesive in response to the widespread failure of that used for 991s and 981s. I wonder whether early 992s and 718s are also prone to this issue.

In 2018, bought a used 2013 911 Manual (in another state) which arrived to me with the delaminated passenger door card. Within 2mo, the driver side delaminated too. I looked underneath and saw a ton of sloppily applied glue AND screws!!. Took a look at the service records and saw a 2017 Porsche dealer repair noted as, "pass + driver door card repair, plastic adhesive applied $950". First, $950 for glue, really?? Good grief! Second, wonder what glue they used such that it delaminated all over again 1 year later? I sold the car a year later as-is, given the dealer wanted like $4k for brand new door cards, $700 for an oil change and $5k for a new clutch. Decided that Porsche maintenance costs just werent for me.

Thanks so much for making this. Could you comment on whether or not this repair would interfere at all with side impact airbag deployment? The concern I’ve read about is that the panel should not be glued in so tightly/permanently such that it would prevent that section from releasing if the airbag needed to deploy. But after catching a glimpse of the door internals and the airbag in this video, I don’t see how the glue job would play any part in hindering airbag deployment.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy10 ай бұрын
Airbag deployment has huge forces. It's not going to do anything to impede this in my opinion. As long as you are not gluing anything in there that can come free and fly about during deployment you should be good.

You're lucky your plastic did not warp. In hotter climates it's warping too and a heatgun will help remold it. I used straps and clamps, some extra wooden blocks to reshape it and then glue the vinyl back on.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy10 ай бұрын
I did have a little warping on one panel, which was corrected as you say. I was tempted to put it in the same video, but didn't want to muddy the waters. I might make another video to show this.

What are the chances!! I just did this repair on my 981 1 day before the upload. My process was exactly the same as yours, even down to the metal ruler. The only difference was I used an adhesive called "camie 313" commonly used for headliners, thought this would be a good match because the backing of headliners is foam. So far it worked out perfect but I'll have to see the long term durability of it. I did this on my passengers side, I will try to do my drivers side with this adhesive to see the difference.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy10 ай бұрын
Apologies for the late upload😀 Nice thing is that if it doesn't hold then you have all the skills to go again using another adhesive. But hopefully it will hold and all will be well.
@omarg60225 ай бұрын
@@jeffrichardsoncardiy update: the adhesive came loose. I think it was more so the heat that did it, I live in southern California and park the car outside in my drive way so that's probably what got it. I will try again with what you're using and report back. Edit: I cannot get this California because of stupid regulations, do you think rubber/contact cement will work or pvc glue?
@jeffrichardsoncardiy5 ай бұрын
@@omarg6022 Can't help you with any other adhesives, as I haven't tested them. I know that the average grade glue isn't going to be good enough, as the heat generated inside the cabin on a hot day parked in the sun is seriously intense. Do you have a friend in a state that sells it. I know there are some doing this to get it. I'm not sure if you saw the video I made of the car cover I made, but this made a massive difference when I was parking the car in the sun at work, and the climate in Cal is pretty similar to where I am in Oz.

Jeff another great video, while I don’t have this problem (yet) it is great to know the repair is relatively simple. I do have an unrelated question. Do you have my experience with tightening the drivers interior rear view mirror? Can this been done at home? I have a 2015 981 base Boxster that has a wobbly rear view interior mirror. Occasionally when going over rough pavement at speed the mirror wiggles and triggers the windscreen wipers. I am trying to see if I can tighten the mirror which will hopefully solve the intermittent windscreen wiper issue. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

I just did this and I must have done something wrong. My panels are securely glued as per instructions, but that 5mm curve didn’t set properly. Mine followed the line of the hard plastic interior and now sticks up about 5mm. Any ideas what I did wrong? The hard plastic piece seems to have warped also.
@jeffrichardsoncardiy6 ай бұрын
It could be the plastic being warped. I've heard people talk of this, where heat warps the plastic shell. I've not seen it, but I've heard that people have corrected it by heating with a heat gun bending back into place.
