I'm not even forty, yet I remember SP. It was king in my part of the world in my grandmother's childhood and into the 1950's, however by the time I showed up, it was all but gone. UP had swallowed up main lines that were still in high demand and small and now gone regional RR bought the other lines. No more red bonnets.

The reason the steam engine needs a helper is a few reasons. 1 to save ebgine brakes the Diesel locomotive provides dynamic braking . 2 water , the 4011 uses a massive amount of water and logistically it's almost impossible to find water to keep it full . They run the steam engine at a reduced power to conserve water and the oil it uses .

Here's a clever name for the 44 tonner. The "Mystery Switcherus" considering it's like green and the Mystery citrus memes from the 3/4 show it seems kind of fitting. Great video Hyce and keep up the fantastic videos!

You left off a very significant part of the story. Rio Grande had been bought by Phillip Anshutz in 1984 and he took the company private & it remained private owned at the time of the SP purchase. As an employee of the Rio Grande at the time, I attended a company town hall held by Anshutz where he explained his business decision for keeping the SP name rather than the Rio Grande even though the D&RGW was technically the company that bought the SP. Then he used RR company equipment & right of way to lay fiber optic communication cable which became Quest communications which bought out the mountain bell phone company. It's a very twisty path to say the least.

That is nothing unusual about that. Here in the east where the two big railroads are CSX and Norfolk Southern and if you look at their corporate make up there are many surviving railroads inside their ownership. Many of the older eastern railroads never bought out the older lines they run on. In many cases you will find they leased the railroads for unbelievable long times. This was done to prevent any claims being brought the parent company due to old issues affecting the railroad they ended up running. So I am sure that is one of the reasons that the Union Pacific Railroad is just a brand name and not the legal owner of the operating railroad. Lawyers are always trying to find ways to protect the parent company from old lawsuits against railroads they may be acquiring.

I handled the end game by having a double headed Diesel starting on either side of the map, dropping off the cars at the mayor sides (Andrews, Nantahala, Alarka Jct., Bryson, East Whittier Dillsboro and Sylva).. At the end of the day they drive back to their starting position, picking up all the empties. I used a spare C-55 as helper for the Red Marble Grade, in addition to splitting up the train and making to runs of the grade. Passenger service was done with two Berkshires, each pulling nine coaches and running non stop - they made over 20k a day PS: A C-46 works great for the pulpwood from Conelly branch to Sylva. No need to refuel during the operation

3 words for Big Boy locomotives Heavy There freight locomotives And there tractive effort is 135,375 Ibf. They where meant to go 80 mph but in track speed was 75 or 35 on mainlines and sharp curves.

You should get an F7 A/B unit for one of the pax trains and let Jersey have his berk for the express lol (or stick an F7A on the express). And since the F7A/B is stupid amount of power you COULD get the nicer pax cars and not worry about the extra weight Also loved the wreck wasn't Jersey cause as soon as the Kenosha at the start kicked on I 100% assumed it was

That 44-Tonner is... very violently green. But I like it. Maybe call it the Flying Lime? Track mods sounds fun too. I had to go looking at Nexus Mods after watching this the first time and there's some good stuff there. Want a wye around the back of Jackson Paper at Sylva? Maybe an eight-track hump yard at Sylva interchange? Extra crossovers for Bryson or Jackson Paper to make switching easier? They'd be my top picks. I'm a little ambivalent about some of the changes made to Robinson Gap but if you want a straight-up coal train and nothing else, they'd be worth investigating too. And I'll have to look at getting into this (and Discord!) when I upgrade my laptop next year. It'd be fun to run on the ES&DT, even if only once because time zones and life and stuff.

48:01 I don’t wanna hear Jersey cry about tonnage till he’s trapped doing 7 mph OR much better 2mph WHICH I HAVE DONE going around horseshoe curve because either A) they didn’t wanna give us a helper or B) the tonnage on the train is actually more than it says on the paperwork even though consistently it’s been proven the case and they just don’t want to listen to us because why would they. Or C) they don’t realize what wet rails do to a tonnage train on a grade
