Rolland Raymond was not just killed by an avalanche: Cab forwards 4188 and 4245 worked the rescue trains with rotary plows. Another cab forward bookended by rotaries was "hit by an avalanche and one of the rotaries overturned," and as for Mr. Raymond, he was "buried under the overturned plow and killed." Not just killed by the avalanche, THE ROTARY SNOWPLOW FELL ON TOP OF HIM! Interestingly, the head end crew of the City is named: engineer Tom Sapunor, fireman Gordon Painter, and roadmaster J. T. Fulbright, who walked back to Yuba Pass to phone for help. 4188 and rotary were dispatched from Emigrant Gap. They managed to couple to the back of the train but couldn't pull it back up The Hill before the air pump on the rotary died, stranding them with the train. 4188 then provided steam heat to the train once the head end power ran out of fuel. 4245 was able to reach the train too, but while clearing the tracks for additional power to enter it too got trapped by a snowdrift. Highlights from an article by Daniel Cobb, source: www.sierrasun.com/news/history-the-1952-snowbound-streamliner-passenger-train/ See also Mark McLaughlin’s book, “Snowbound: Legendary Winters of the Tahoe Sierra.” yourtahoeguide.com/2022/01/the-brutal-winter-of-1951-52-part-ii/

For context, if the money is 1930s/40s dollars, your little railroad went into debt a quarter of the amount the U.S. spent on the 1940 Two Ocean Navy Act, or about $229 billion dollars today. 😦 (per the MeasuringWorth formula, not the less accurate inflation one).

Had to have this one pointed out to me because my mate knew I would love it and I did! An an Australian - railways and snow just do not go together. We don't have a lot of snow country here and there are no railways running in it so I am always interested in the ways utilised by those who have to cope with it.

See you at the train show! Whereabouts will you be hanging around there? It's nice to have something fun to look forward to, especially as me and my girlfriend are emotionally recovering from the passing of her dear grandfather just this past weekend. He died after a really nasty battle with stage 4 throat cancer. I've also got an important interview I'm stressing over this week too, so I really want to escape into train world come Saturday. It's funny to me every time you say you'll be in Amherst. Amherst is 30min away from West Springfield, where the "Amherst Railway Societies Railroad Hobby Show" always is. I've been there many times, since I was very little, but until this year I never even realized it's got "Amherst" in the name, as my Dad always called it the "big train show in Springfield."

Point of interest. US railroads did not invent time zones. That distinction goes to Sir Sandford Fleming, a Canadian engineer.

Seeing the 'Brickline' cars now has me wanting a lego train simulator would pretty much just be this game but everything is made of legos and depending on how bad a collision or derailment is you could find yourself standing next to a pile of lego bricks which was once your train.
