I know this is a bit older of a video but ill shoot my question anyway! Im currently a senior in highschool and I also want to be a concept artist or maybe an animator. I have creativity and ideas so I feel motivated, but I know my technical skills are lacking. I was going to practice gesture drawings next, but in your 2012 section where you said 2000+ gesture drawings and you felt like you learned nothing-- How do I avoid this?? Ive heard peoples say doing the pose yourself and thinking about it critically is the way to go, but Id really like your take on how to make that learning process, or really any technical learning process (anatomy, etc) ACTUALLY effective. Thank you so much, this video is super inspiring!

I used that first excuse as a reason to quit art at 16, and formed an anxiety over art after that. I'm now 30, starting over from the beginning and pushing past that anxiety. I want to make art. I don't want my dumb angsty teenage years to stop me.

I bought both your Fantasy Characters Series as soon as I saw them and I am now using them for a prototype board game/RPG. You are really a great artist and your video about rates helps a lot solo indie developers like me to understand what could be the cost if we want to have some custom art. This video is 3 years old now, I am wondering if you are still taking gigs from private and solo studios or you are now working only with mid-high level company. Thank again for your video and your cool fantasy character assets!

Flipping the canvas in Photoshop or viewing your work upside down is a trick that doesn't truly make you better at art. While it might help you spot obvious mistakes, relying on it prevents you from developing the critical skill of seeing your work accurately as it is. Mastering observation without needing to flip anything is essential for real artistic growth.

Been in the of daily drawing grind for well over 10 years now. This method is something I have done for years and years, yet it doesn't seem to work for me. I am in a constant state of Identifying a problem, practicing/studying the problem and then attempts at application. And initially, it actually seems to work... *Initially.* But after a couple of weeks or so, the same issues arise again and again. I have *zero* information retention. Example: I've drawn probably *Thousands* of Horse skulls. All sorts of different angles, parts, breakdowns, form studies etc etc. And when I am practicing them, I am getting better and better. Then after a week or so of studying/practicing, I'm drawing them pretty damn well. Even from my imagination. *But...* If a few weeks go by, and I haven't drawn a horse skull and you were to then ask me to draw one, itd almost be as if I had never seen a horse skull in my life. Terrible proportions, terrible landmark placements, terrible everything. So, I then have to go back and repeat the process. But no matter how many hours I've spent drawings horse skulls, I can never seem to retain the information. This is true for everything, any subject matter. I don't understand what it is I need to do to actually keep this knowledge after I learn it, but whatever it is, I cant seem to figure it out even after all these years. Drives me insane that even after 10-15 years of drawing and studying everyday, I cant just sit down and draw some basic stuff from memory.

So, when blocking out the base colours of my character you recommend NOT using the lasso tool? I think i'll consider it. I dont like the hard edges on my characters' outlines because of the lasso tool. Ive heard that you can increase the feather property of your selections to give them a softer edge, but I'm using Fresco, not photoshop, and i cant find said property anywhere. Maybe I'll outline the character with a soft brush then make a selection within the shape with the lasso tool. That way it'll blend in seamlessly with the inner side of the brush outline and i'll still get that soft look.

Ah yes. I think I will continue to consume content related to League of Legends (especially Arcane) for the rest of the year. The thing i wonder though is how everything else about League of Legends is better than the actual game. The art, the lore, the characters, the animated videos, the music videos, the shows. PS: This is based on what ive heard from a lot of people, havent actually played league of legends so i cant give much opinion on it, but i will say its just not my type of game, but DANG the art sure is!

When you showed the first image, the anatomy thing, and after the portret. You must have been drawing for years already (as it's just digital painting you're shawing)! You happen to have a video or guide on the time before? I wish I could draw like that even xD.

This was an awesome explanation & overview, I also liked that you explicitly mentioned that without the understanding of drawing & form this stuff gets much more difficult. I had to learn this the hard way and only noticed my big mistake here about two years ago... :) A question I have, because this is an issue of mine - would you be interested in doing a video on "local" vs "global contrast"? I am often unsure how to get better at this aside from "feeling it out" thanks to studies of stilllifes, photos or master studies. I wodnered if there was some kind of rule of thumb. :,D

I have to say, there are so many great art tutorials out there, and I have watched many of them, but the way this was structured made it so much easier to understand for me than just watching someone draw. I feel like I finally understand something that I’ve been missing for 12 years! I’ll be watching the rest of this series for sure. I cannot express how grateful I am for it.

15:07 but thats not style, Personal style is how you see the world, shaped by your environment and experiences, not by genres like realism or comic. I can paint realism, comic, oil, digital... and its always my style, its how I aproach stuff. Find your style sound stupid because you have your own style from the begin.
