i couldnt stop opening new links as i was watching this video lol. the amount of inspiration and just exposure i've gotten from this alone is just overwhelming. a lot of great artist whose work ive seen before but whose names i've never really known have been shown here, and i am glad to finally get a somewhat deeper understanding of how they work. this was very comprehensive in a way that i have a source to go to that contains many different artists and most importantly the ways or techniques that they use to achieve their works. definitely love love love this video, cant wait for more. i think this is even better than your first vid.

You can see Jonas De Ros process of landscape painting in his Skillshare.com class. He said he starts with thumbnail sketche because they help him getting the composition right.

yeah it is prefrence of the company some of them looks some classci style ,very b lurred and similar to traditional painting fx, and some of them want more realistic ,with photobashing or hard shapes edges with high qualitty sense of lighting environment

Hey Forrest, just wondering if you still don't use Reference nowadays?
@ForrestImel
@ForrestImel 4 жыл бұрын
I'll use reference in a time crunch or for things that I would have a hard time learning in a few short hours. I still think taking even just 30-60 minutes of time to study before jumping into a painting is more beneficial than not doing so than just copying reference, but there definitely comes a time where it's needed for the process.

That's a weird quote: "I personally don't like to use reference because I'm out to learn as much as I can." Isn't it the opposite? lol what new things can you learn without reference? That's a crazy thing to say, very egotistical. It's like saying you can make something better than nature itself and that's an impossible challenge.

I'm not saying I never study. That's generally how I get most of my knowledge that I apply into my work is through studying and memorization, not by copying directly from a photo on to my painting. It's definitely not the technique I'd recommend if you are going for the most accurate painting ever, if you want accuracy then yeah go ahead and use photo reference. But if you have a desire to be able to paint what you want from your head without reference it's very helpful. Also, try not to take anything I say as me saying it's an absolute thing. This is just what I do and it works for me. Hope that clears some things up :)

Forrest Imel But isn't painting from your head the same as copying? You're still copying no matter what you do whether you look at an object directly or indirectly that's why the most successful artists are those with photographic memories. How do you normally see images in your head? Are they fuzzy with some things clear?

Except I'm not out to capture the most perfectly accurate image. I just want to be good enough at the fundamentals to bend them how I'd like. Look at guys like Brad Rigney, he has a very photo realistic look, but his lighting is horrible inaccurate. But the lighting he uses makes the image even cooler than if it were in realistic lighting. All of the studying of lighting and form he did helped him be able to play with different light sources at a moments notice instead of need to go out and shoot reference at all different angles. Also the idea of me wanting to draw something anywhere without having to say "oh shoot I can't, I didn't bring any reference of poses, faces, etc." just bothers me. I'd prefer to draw wherever whenever and not rely on anything but my imagination.

what he means by that is putting what you've learned to practice. He's using his knowledge from past exercises and research from expanding your visual library and trial and error.

Of all these artists the best is jesper ejsing. Just my opinion but many of the others are too chaotic and look very fake with photo manipulation, and general lack of imagination.
