I am a black woman and a first-generation graduate student earning my M.A in Elementary Education. I can agree with everything that you said especially about the financial stressors. Additionally, my Master's program is 100 % online which poses another struggle of feelings of disconnection. Luckily, I have access to mental health care via my PCP with medications and a licensed therapist. I love your video! Keep up the good work! We, as black women, need more solidarity in places like grad school.

Great video.. I am finishing my associate's degree program and I am considering become an Psychiatrist. I am also thinking about changing the major that I have selected for my bachelor's degree program to Psychology. Would you recommend an bachelor's degree in Psychology as a stepping stone toward becoming a Psychiatrist?
@DrAtashaJordanАй бұрын
Great question! Psychology is a great option to learn some of the "normal" aspects of human behavior as well as the pathology, because there is a heavy emphasis on just the pathology in psychiatry. However, I usually recommend that folks get their undergraduate degree in something that can help you get a job, especially if you end up changing your mind career wise. If you want to practice clinically, you need at least a masters in psychology and the actual psychology degree isn't always the most marketable outside of the field. I hope this helps! And good luck as you wrap up your associates!

Hello I am a freshman Psych B.S. in St.Louis and am thinking about going on the premed track to pursue psychiatry. However, I never shadowed a psychiatrist. Can you show us what a day or two in your life looks like? Also what should I be doing now as a freshman who has done dual enrollment in high school?
@DrAtashaJordan4 ай бұрын
hi there! great questions! I have a video about what the first week of attending life was like. It's hard to show the details due to the importance of protecting patient privacy. I have some other videos though wher you get snippets of the day to day! And as a college student, your main focuses should be 1) have fun, but not too much! 2) get good grades to make you competitive for medical school 3) discover what your passions are through trial and error! Hope that helps :)

Sleep? Wow. We saw patients constantly all night.
@DrAtashaJordan5 ай бұрын
A resident’s ability to sleep (or not) on call likely depends on what sort of coverage they provide. And it also depends on the busyness of each night. The nights I could record videos were the slower nights. And this is when I covered the ED. If no patients came in with psychiatric complaints, there was no need for the ED to consult me 🤷🏾♀️
@HeavyProfessor5 ай бұрын
@@DrAtashaJordanOh, I see. We worked in the separate psychiatric ER all night, which has a steady influx of patients 24/7. Also covered the entire hospital essentially, but not much going on there between midnight-0600.

Dr. Atasha Is there one (or two) thing(s) that you REALLY wish you did or knew when you were in early 20s that you think could have helped you become a more influential psychiatrist or gave you a less tough time during your residency?
@DrAtashaJordan7 ай бұрын
Interesting question! I guess it depends on your definition of influence. To me: my biggest goals as a psychiatrist are to provide excellent care and to educate the masses about mental health and mental illness. If I am doing those two things, I think I have achieved the influence I seek. I’m glad that I created my own path in my 20s. I didn’t do typical “pre med” activities. Rather, I traveled the world and honed my teaching skills in many different ways. And regarding how to have a less tough time in residency…I think the only way to achieve that is not going to residency… residency by definition is tough. You just have to accept it! And find healthy coping skills and support to get you through it!
@shapley49806 ай бұрын
@@DrAtashaJordan Thank you! I meant to ask like would there be anything that would be good for future physicians to be aware of or expect so they can prepare themselves as much as possible before jumping into residency life. 😅 I do think that there is no such way to not suffer when it comes to being a doctor. Also, my definition of influence was providing the "right" type of care and having good insights to life and human minds. Thank you a lot for your responses all the time.

Great question! This was a while ago so I don’t remember how many patients I saw that night. While in residency, this shift was covering psychiatry consults that came into the emergency department. The volume really just depends on how the night goes. Some nights there are no consults at all. Some nights it’s back to back consults all night. Hope that helps!

Which hospital has an emergency psychiatry service??? I'm interested in PES
@DrAtashaJordan8 ай бұрын
Most hospitals have it in some capacity! Some hospitals have a stand alone psychiatry emergency department. In other hospitals, patients with psychiatric complaints go to the usual emergency department then a consult is placed for the psychiatrist to come see the patient. At my currently job, it’s the latter. While in residency, we had a mixed model
