It seems great but what about the noise level...if you underexpose and than bring it back in post processing you will inyroduce much more noise to the image. Have you considered this?
@AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын
I guess it depends a lot on the age of the camera. On my X-T4 I get very low noise levels and not much ISO noise on a +2 or +3 exposure or shadows increase. That being said, you could output to DNG with the LR Enhance and it would clean up any ISO noise beautifully.
@thomastuorto9929Күн бұрын
LRC definitely makes it easy, but do you like it better than doing a multi-exposure photo using layers & blending in PS? Just curious. I haven't tried in PS as of yet. Like you I always shoot on each side of the zero on my cameras exposure meter but usually just pick one to work with in LR. Thanks for any replies.
@AndyhutchinsonКүн бұрын
The problem with all exposure blends with bracketed shots is that, no matter how careful you are not to over-process, they have an 'uncanny valley' feel to them. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but shots just look more natural if they're a single exposure. :)

Another good video, Andy. I know you're a fan of the demosaicing in DxO Photolab for processing your raw files (as am I), but that is one app that does not have a traditional radial mask. I would be interested in seeing how you would go about the same task with the same photos in PL8 to achieve similar results.

Yes. Weirdly I think DxO have put radial type control points in Nik tools 🤷

@@Andyhutchinson Thanks for that. As we flip around various photo editing apps we have a habit of always looking for the same tools to do the same jobs as if the way we learn to do something in the app we started with rather than really getting to know how the new app works. I’m coming to realise the control point tool in Photolab is hugely versatile once you learn to control its behaviours… it is really quite powerful

Basically you have to store edits in a sidecar file if you use Files mode - but if you use Photos mode the edits are stored in the Photos database.

Great review! I just tried Photomator and found glaring holes - such as no lens correction on the iPad version. I have a Mac too, but would like to be able to do some editing away from home. Affinity Photo seems to be missing a lot of basic adjustments in their raw editing. Also, DNGs show up blank. Just a black screen. My best finals have come from Darktable, but that’s complex, and slow - even on an M2 with 16GB RAM (with NO Metal GPU acceleration). AI masking for complex, multi hue subjects are the main area that I’d like. AI generative, in my opinion, is just 🍌🍌🍌

Thank you. I've now learned my lesson a few years ago. I only buy (rare) or subscribe if I have no choice (LR Classic) as the other apps get sucked into the OS sooner or later. Even an app where I had bought a "lifetime License" screwed me over and wanted more money.
@Andyhutchinson4 күн бұрын

I hope the reason for this one is that they're going to take eg local edits and stuff from Photomator and add it to Apple Photos but who knows

Yep - it's anyone's guess really. It might disappear completely, we might see bits of it appearing in Photos, we might get a new Aperture.
@fvsch6 күн бұрын
There's still a chance that Pixelmator Pro will remain and will even be expanded upon by Apple, like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. But I have less hope for Photomator, which has too much overlap with Apple's own Photos app. I expect we'll see a few things from Photomator end up in Photos, while development of Photomator is paused and the app will be delisted on the app store after some time.
@Andyhutchinson4 күн бұрын
If I was a betting man then I'd say the same. Everyone's hanging on a new Aperture and maybe, just maybe, we'll get it.
@MrJMTGaming6 күн бұрын
I think you have picked the wrong acquisition to make this video around. From the industry chatter, Apple have been closely collaborating with and nurturing that company for a few years and are absorbing it to fill the professional gap they created when they killed off Aperture, as well as capitalising on the current exodus from Adobe products after their TOS changes (which are the reason that my company cannot use Photoshop and more and moved to Pixelmator Pro).
@Andyhutchinson6 күн бұрын
That's the outcome we're all hoping for - but Apple's history of app acquisitions is public record. Check out the list on Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Apple) and you'll find that not a single one of the 100 or so that they've bought still exist. I think we're all hoping that this is some kind of re-emergence of Aperture, but based on how they've been in the past, it's far more likely that some of the features in Pixelmator/Photomator will live on ... but not much else.
@MrJMTGaming6 күн бұрын
@@Andyhutchinson I'm going to look at the list only since Tim took the helm, and pretty much everything since then either still exists or wasn't a direct to consumer product in the first place.

Yes, quite so, Andy. Well said. I subscribed to Photomator for one year ending May 2025, and I'm glad that I did not opt for the outright purchase option. Shame, the app has real promise and the interface is superb. I am curious as to why Apple purchased Photomator, since the skills base they are buying seems image processing related, but maybe they are more interested in the Pixelmator Pro market segment since Photomator is new and has a relatively small custom base as compared to Pixelmator Pro. I guess we are lucky to have an excellent, stable for the foreseeable future, option in Photolab 8, currently on a Black Friday discount...

How is 'protection' to be understood with this slider. Is it a simple desaturation, as available with the negative side of the Vibrancy slider and the sliders in the Channel Mixer, or something else? When I over-saturate green and orange-to-red colors in PhotoLab 8, this protection slider at 100 % has minimal effect on the saturation of those colors (arw-file).

I was thinking to join the Photomator world couple of weeks ago, then came the acquisition announcement. Now struggling whether to go ahead for a lifetime plan and see when an OS update will kill or to go for other options like ON1/Camerabag. On the ON1 free trials, a bit of mix as sometimes, the AI things seems overcooked and sometimes look weird, sky swap AI also make me feel, am I creating an image or enhancing my image :).
@Andyhutchinson6 күн бұрын
I hear you - there's definitely a thin line between post-processing and compositing. Luminar Neo takes it too far but I think you can stay the right side of the line with On1 to a greater degree.
@fvsch6 күн бұрын
For Photomator, a "lifetime" subscription might work. I won't call it a lifetime license, since it relies on the app remaining listed on the app store and still working in the next few macOS updates, so that you can get maybe 3 years worth of your purchase. Main downside, beyond the risk of the app going away, is that Photomator was still a fairly young product (compared to Pixelmator) and needs more polish and a few more features IMHO. Its RAW engine and development algorithms are alright, but not best in class (Lightroom, Capture One and DxO PhotoLab are ahead). Some possible alternatives: - Nitro by Gentlemen Coders (a one-man shop) - DxO PhotoLab (a bit pricey, but maybe more palatable with the current Black Friday offer)

It’s not entirely true big companies struggle to innovate. They can. Bell Labs was a thing, Xerox had a famed R&D division, Corning and many others. That era of big corporate research labs gave us the foundations of most of our modern tech. A recent paper I read, can’t recall where, had the idea that it was a combination of loosened antitrust rules and government research spending that took us off track. The government forking over cash to universities had the effect of allowing companies to rely on the government to pay for it instead. If someone else did come up with a good idea outside of a public domain setting, they were free to buy them up. What the paper was really trying to figure out was why modern productivity growth is so bad; they were thinking when companies funded it there was always a purpose, discipline, accountability. And they would force multiple disciplines together if it seemed to be needed, instead of what you see in academia where it’s more siloed off. In government research funding, yeah, there’s pretty much none of that. I think I saw something about a federally funded research project giving cocaine to ducks recently. All that to say, big companies can innovate, and can probably do better R&D than any other institution. We just disincentive them from doing so any more.
