What are the pros and cons of separate contact and client tables. I do business to consumer and business to business so I have set up a table that links backs to its self so contact and Clients can be on the same table. If I set it up this way is there a failure point I’m not seeing?

Is it still true, 7 months later, that AT's Interfaces can only be readable and not usable when embed unless paying for each user?
@GarethPronovost2 күн бұрын
Yes, if you want users to edit they must be paid users. However, AT does offer a cheaper option in Portals now

Hi, I have enjoyed a number of your Airtable videos, thank you. I have a usability problem I wonder if you can give me any pointers on: We visit homes to help people reduce carbon footprint and save money by taking energy efficiency measures. On every visit we recommend or take one or more actions, each of which has a specific ‘deliverable’ that holds standard values for savings etc. The entity relationship is: • Visit to action = 1 to many • Deliverable to action = many to 1 We have many different deliverables, over 200. When adding a new action, which is usually done using a form that is prefilled with the correct Visit, the Deliverable field presents a long list that is in seemingly random order. I cannot find a way to sort or group the selection of links. Interfaces do not seem to help. This must be a common issue . . .

It's been a while since we bumped into this. The former mechanics were based on the order that the underlying records were created. I wonder if you can shorten your search by grouping your records and using dynamic linked filters?

There isn't a formatting option for formulas yet, but you can multiply a number by 100 and add a % sign after it

Im building a database website for a company on softr with airtable as the backend and in project details i have their data added into a items details block and they can edit whatever data comes and goes out of it well what they want is a way to tell what user on the website added or removed something from this so like who last modified this information? Can do think theres a way to pull this off?
@GarethPronovost7 күн бұрын
All edits come through the API that you establish between Airtable and Softr, so it will always look like that user (presumably you?) made the edits to the data set. However, you can use forms when making edits that record the user who submitted the update

Damn! I was really hoping it would be free for external users to use solutions developed by licenced users, in the same way Microsoft 365 developed apps are, in the main, free to be used by guest users. I have a simple membership database of about 1,000 contacts and wanted those contacts to be able to update their own data. $8 x 1,000 'Portal Users' is not even close to being a viable proposition! Great video, btw! I'm just disappointed with AirTable's direction on this.
@GarethPronovostКүн бұрын
Have you explored front end options for Airtable? Softr, Stacker, Noloco are the most prominent and you can publish apps to thousands of users, layers atop your Airtable data.

Not exactly as Fillout isn't exactly a workflow software (although they do allow for automation now). Ply gives you the flexibility to query one or more databases as part of your workflow

Thanks for this great tutorial! I was unable to finish though, got stuck on minute 14 where we are in the content part (in the Google Docs button, under properties window), click + then find records, select grid, it opens up all the fields to show, the 'insert' button does not activate no matter what I select there. I tried finding out why in many ways but did not get an answer... Does anyone know how to fix it?

This is amazing, thank you so much! I've build some test invoices by following your video and it worked well (I did had to play up a bit to understand that I will always have to create a new invoice number first, then go to line items and select that invoice and add lines, etc.), but now I would like to send it as an attachment with my company logo, etc. How do we do that? You mentioned automations, is that an automation case (sorry for my ignorance)?

True. It seems like a lot to manage such a small number of external users. I hope it's just the first step for Airtable
@cerl98116 күн бұрын
I feel like this feature is extremely limited to users of Airtable. Hard to see the use case and benefits over other options. We technically can't have other company members use it that don't require full access. Ok, thats out (unless you create external emails, but not Gmail 😆) I feel like most companies would have a lot more external users/customers than a handful. So alternatives like Stacker or Softr are going to be cheaper. Or just use Airtables other own features like share views, interfaces and forms to view and change/update data. If this was aimed at companies for employees access/use, I believe this would be awesome. Nice and simple views, buttons, layouts, that would be effective. Guess we'll see. Or I could be wrong and this would benefit many users and their external guests 😅
@GarethPronovost14 күн бұрын
I agree, I still see a huge upside in using Softr, Stacker, Noloco, etc.

HI! I've been going crazy for three days I have to synchronize trello with airtable and I'm already stuck in a simple scenario like yours airtable modules both seacrh and upsert record don't filter things for me with the formula as yours..

@@GarethPronovost Thanks and bye... Yes, of course, I know, but I was a bit desperate :-) I’ve overcome the issue, and as always, it turned out to be simple... Now I can use search a record and upsert a record. The problem now is syncing Trello card labels with a multi-select field in Airtable and figuring out how to bring any images attached to a Trello card into Airtable 🙂 It would be great to have a video about advanced synchronization of a Trello board with an Airtable base.

I mean, they have a board to report to with many who expect a return on investment. I think the fact that they are finding alternative revenue streams is intriguing, although it may be too costly for many SMBs still.

Mny tks Gareth. What advantages does this offer compared to Softr or Stacker?
@GarethPronovost14 күн бұрын
It simplifies your tech stack if you can use fewer tools and gives you less to manage. However I'm not sure if the price makes sense to actually *move* existing systems off Softr or Stacker

I cant wait.. Just signed up. I've been trying to find workarounds for this for a while! I have installers who access just their daily jobs and fill out a completion doc and upload photos. Paying $54 a month for them seems wild.

So if you take the example of customer service If I use Airtable to log cases and have 250 customers, I have to pay 250 x 8$ ?

Probably not the best fit for 250+ external users unless it's contributing to your revenue

It's a good idea, and I'm glad (as a paying customer) they are investing in improvements! I would say15 users seems like a lot to buy for many use cases. And not allowing free email services (like gmail) to login to the portal would also rule out a lot of people. Why not be more inclusive ?

Hi Gareth, thanks for the video. When using this form in Softr (as a url link, NOT as an embed), how can I pass through the Logged in User's ID to the form using a URL parameter? These forms have URL parameters that make each form submission linked to a particular piece of equipment, but I also want to capture the information of the user submitting the form automatically. Thanks!

This is helpful on the Automation side. Helps me figure out a wrinkle I hadn't quite tackled yet in my Airtable PM journey. One related issue I'm struggling with, I'm curious if you've got another video or thoughts on: it's helpful for my projects to see how the schedule changes over time. Is there a way that you recommend for tracking versions of the full schedule, or visualizing how task due dates and durations have changed over time?
