I stopped playing when I got to grinding engineering materials. Couldn't be bothered playing a game that stopped being fun when my progression became a chore.

I quit some years ago because the grind was evil and it felt like it was a constant rat race between people finding ways to make the grind easier and FDev patching out those methods. It never felt fun. Even now as I see this and I get interested to play the game my thought is how long until they make the game more grindy again because they think they made it too easy. All my trust in FDev is gone.

I've been very anti-PGI since they fucked MWO and the whole bullshit with MW5 and EGS. MW5 has been a very soul-less game with barely any of the flair of the previous MW4:Mercs. The DLCs were somewhat enjoyable, but the core gameplay being the same repetitive BS with the same boring procedurally generated garbage got old very fast. It's just a rush to assault mechs to do the crazy missions, with no real point to holding onto previous mechs. I hate to say it given my PGI-disdain, but MW5:Clans looks like it might actually be a decent story game. But it being a straightforward campaign wont lend well to replayability I think. Not necessarily a bad thing. MW4:V was linear and MW4:Mercs was kiiiiind of open-ish within straight forward planetary contracts and stuff. So while MW5Clans may be a good game, it just wont be replayable IMO. I dont think we'll see people putting in 900+hrs into this game unless it has some serious depth and branching stories or something, that I dont think PGI is really capable of.

Holy shit, has ED finally moved out of the 90s into the mid 2000s? If this game wasn't a decade old now, maybe I would be expecting some QOL fixes that wouldn't make using external tools a requirement to have fun, or god forbid, some actual meaningful content!

cool story, but I spent a lot of time years ago to engineer more than a hundred ships, what made me quit was when I calculated the time it would take me to engineer the on foot gear, i.e. the suits and guns.~70+hrs per gun was beyond my tolerances, frankly engineering ships out was infinitely easier time wise and less mind-numbing in process.

Sure... BUT none of it is "fun" by most player's standards. FDev always does this. They start with ridiculous extremes & then "nerf" things after player outcry! They're diabolical. ; ) On foot is still pretty much a nonstarter for me, even now. I REALLY wish they would greatly increase the incidence of high level pre-engineered gear. Just kinda with random upgrades. Scoring some interesting gear would motivate me to play, but grinding for the same old meta build everyone is using... I'll pass. I don't really like FPS play enough to bother! On a MOAR! positive note, I'm having fun with the new career I started. It's still very slow paced, but I get to do what I want to advance in the game now. I hope FDev will continue to stay out of my way & let me build/fly ships & shoot stuffs. o7

Late to this party, but personally i love the MAD-4A as my personal mech outfitted entirely with lasers (both to save weight for more armor and also because i like putting down more enemies in quick succession while still running pretty cool vs PPCs and just hate the idea of ammo running out, i never run ballistics in my own mechs). I'll sometimes pilot the Grasshopper -5P that i somehow picked up very early on. For lance mates, the Stalker is always a good choice, as is the Grasshopper-5N, the MAD-3D, and the KGC-000. I love the King Crab so much, even though i personally am terrible with maneuvering it. I honestly hate the Atlas with a burning passion. I like Catapults and/or Stalkers for battlefield contracts especially, they're great at racking up aircraft and tank kills right away. My favorite lance composition is my MAD-4A, Stalker, King Crab, and either a MAD-3D or Grasshopper-5N as the final mech, depending on if I'm planning on long range engagement (Marauder for sniping) or needing quick allies for running through buildings in a scorched earth mission

The game IS fun, but also still very time consuming. For me these changes are important because they allow me to decide how I spend my time instead of being forced into certain activities... The game is more fun like this, but will still take a long time to advance. Even after these changes, the game still plays a lot like "space job simulator" but the job is more fun... ; ) If that makes sense.

For me the biggest issue is the lack of in game content that the game has. There's tons of promising idea that the dev have introduced and has been added to the game. But they're mostly barebones to the point that they're quite useless. BGS, Power play, squadron, multi crew, fleet carrier. These things to me are the kind of content that should've been the core of ED. If these mechanics can be fully implemented, the contents will create it self thru player to player interaction. Which I believe was what David braben envision the game is going to be when they Kickstarted ED.

Elite is no longer supported by a dev/management team that is willing to invest more into it, not for a long while now. They are looking for their dollar signs elsewhere, Elite is in maintenance mode when you think about the fact that these changes are mostly just tweaking numbers and it took them literal years.

That's right. From FDev's perspective, the engineering grind was/is one of the main gameplay loops to fill the hours, and now that the grinding is nerfed to an extent, the players will (rightfully!) demand more content/loops into the game 😄so maybe that's why they eager to do this sooner. One mile wide but one inch deep, they need to add various new content to the game to make it more interesting instead of more laborious. But after 10yrs of support, they might face another problem, something players might not want to get into... Anyway, I'm pretty happy with this update. Finally!

Engineering change is HUGE!!! After grinding and maxing everything out in mats to then research the power play grind requirements and I just lost all motivation

Another comment, as a LOOONG time player with 2500 hours in the game, a couple of dozen fully engineered ships, what finally got me was the ground engineering grind, it was/is? fuckin awful. The good news is my small friend group is reinstalling the game and giving it a second shot.

Clan tactics, bidding, and batchalls (battle challenges) are all predicated on a sense of honor and fairness, based on Clan Laws dictated by Nicholas Kerensky. A Clan MechWarrior loves nothing more than a one on one fight against a worthy opponent. Honor is paramount to Clanners, both personal honor and the honor of their Clan. So when Smoke Jaguar commits the atrocity of destroying Edo, killing millions of civilians, I think that would be a major blow to Smoke Jaguar Clan honor, and perhaps that is what we will see in the game. Our character and his Star of MechWarriors may decide that Beta Galaxy has lost its way, and they need to forge their own path of honor and glory during Operation Revival.

My mentality when playing this game is essentially how quickly can it headshot something and still be standing, and if not, how well can it assist me in headshotting what I can't. I feel so strongly about this that I start to think how dangerous the clans would be if they weren't concerned with honor and just went straight for the throat every time.

Individuals can be good guys, but the factions, both Clans and Inner Sphere, are all flawed and guilty of various levels of war crimes, betrayals, and serving their own self interests above all else.

Nah the Free Rasalhague Republic is definitely not the "bad guys". Neither are Clan Ghost Bear since they essentially go native. Free Worlds League isn't as bad as House Kurita and the Capellans. But House Steiner and the Federated Suns are pretty much a bunch of oligarchs and aristocrats playing stupid games. Hands down the best places to be a normal civilian with the best standards of living would be Free Worlds League or Federated Suns space, although anywhere near any inner sphere faction border would be dangerous.

If the story is centered on Smoke Jags, Beta Galaxy makes sense given that they were involved in most of the notable events in Btech lore that the Jags touched during the invasion (Turtle Bay, Wolcott, Luthien, Tukayyid). An Inner Sphere battlemech regiment would have a base number of 108 mechs. A Galaxy would be more analogous with a Brigade, as a Galaxy has usually 3 to 5 clusters, with each Cluster being roughly equal to an IS regiment. Clan organization typically had a higher rate of inclusion of infantry (Elementals), and Aerospace fighters than a traditional Inner Sphere mech regiment, so their actual numbers of mechs would vary wildly from one galaxy (or subunit) to the next. Going by cannon, the Beta Galaxy of the Smoke Jaguars TO&E for the period consisted of the following (courtesy of Sarna.net): Swath Keshik - This would be the Galaxy command trinary, which was 15 mechs 1st Jaguar Guards - 55 mechs, 10 Aerospace fighters, 75 Elementals 214th Jaguar Dragoons - couldnt find a full TO&E, but one of the 4 trinaries was an aero trinary so it had at most 45 mechs. Most likely at least one star of mechs was replaced by elementals. 225th Jaguar Battle Cluster - again no full TO&E available, but its listed as 3 trinaries, 1 Binary (10 mechs), and 1 Supernova (which is 2 novas). One of the 3 trinaries is elementals and the other 2 are most likely mechs. Supernova would be two stars of mechs and two of elementals that work together as a unit. So call the total for the cluster 110 mechs, 125 elementals. Possibly one star of mechs mightve been replaced with 10 Aerospace fighters. 267th Battle Cluster - No full TOE available, its estimated to be somewhere around 60 mechs, with aero and elemental support. 362nd Assault Cluster - No full TOE available, but its listed as 2 Trinaries (one of which is elementals), and 2 Supernovas. Each supernova would be 10 mechs, so if we assume the command trinary is all mechs, thats 65 mechs total for the Cluster, with Aero/Elemental support. So the full roster of the Beta Galaxy at the beginning of the invasion would be approximately 350 mechs, plus several hundred elementals and dozens of aerospace fighters. Considerably more than the "100 or so mechs" you estimated.

4 years later but glad to see that this ship receives the love it deserves, not just for racing. It's one of my favourite ships despite it's flaws. Flaws of course, if you compare it to beasts like the Vulture. But this ship is so cool and fun to pilot!. I love it with all shock cannons, although you'll become a BBQ lol. Hey, great video. I haven't got a PC, just an old PS4, so no more ED for me, I quit more than a year ago, buy I still like the content. o7

Maybe the character you play go from rookies to pro, but also become increasingly disillusioned by clan management and their tactics? Maybe when that guy levels Edo you have some clanmates that are at risk because of the bombardment as well - maybe you are one of them and you have to get out of the area and then have to curb how annoyed and even mutinous you might feel afterwards (especially if a packmate dies) because, well, he's a superior officer damnit. But it's cool to not play as the 'good guys' (although who would fulfill that role in Battletech?) It's interesting to me that we are playing as a Clanners as opposed to say the Draconis Combine resisting the invasion, perhaps that might make them the 'most' good in context. Presumably we won't have to worry about 'budgets' and all that as actual clanners so we basically just have to make sure our mechs are outfitted for the war we need to wage for each world we go to (example, we might not want to use too many laser weapons on a desert planet for example), this to me is not only cool and arguably removes the downtime and less interesting 'contract' missions of mercenaries, but might help keep up the pace and let them (PGI) concentrate more on the story beats. Especially if we are going at least as far as Luthien/Turkayeed or however you spell it. Hopefully you're player character will get recognized for their contributions to the war effort and how they accomplish them. For example, will I be viewed as a barbarian if I show proclivity towards getting u pclose and punching enemy mechs? Can we issue batchal ourselves, etc?

The K9 Urby is great to buy when it pops up. It has a bunch of double heatsinks. Buy it, send it to storage, and then sell it. Not the cheapest double heatsinks but you get around 8 of them.

Seems like the character you play has moral decisions to make so players will likely have some input into the way that they and their Star comports itself on these missions. I'll just say the Mechlab better be better than the one in MechWarrior 5. MechWarrior 5's didn't even comply with Battletech Weapon sizes. I think most players were forced to mod the vanilla Mechlab out just to make the game seem like actual MechWarrior.

According to the poscast interview the mechlab will be more involved than MW5 mercs vanilla, but not as involved as MWO with some kind of research / upgrade component. ps. no one is ever 'forced' to mod a game unless it's to mod out game breaking/bricking bugs. They do however very much support modding to an extreme degree because they know they cant cater to every single player demographic.
