This is the location of My and my Brother's Sasquatch encounter when we were 16 and 15 years old respectively. Utterly terrifying. It happened 45 years ago. It was a 4 day trip and it was in the middle of the week. It was spring and everything was blooming and greening up like crazy. We encountered not a single person those four days. At that time I'm not sure the Stratton Bald alternate trail even existed. It's only a two mile trail and makes the summit quite easy to reach. Maybe that's why we encountered so few people in our early trips. We took the Naked Ground trail early that first morning and if you have ever done that hike it's easily 8 hours and can be brutal at the swithbacks before you reach the ridge where the Haoe, Naked Ground, and Slickrock Creek trails all meet. It stormed and rained all day! We were soaking wet, tired and hungry when we got to the ridge, but our plan was still to summit the bald so we took a left on the Haoe. We arrived on the bald as weather was moving in. Our previous plan was to camp on the summit but we didn't want to get struck by lightning so we walked probably 100 or so yards back down the trail and set up the tent on the ridge surrounded by a stand of birch trees. We ate and crashed. I remember waking up soon after having to relieve myself and it was dark by now. I grabbed the flashlight and as I got out of the tent I realized I couldn't see two feet in front of me. We were in a cloud at this point. I got back in the tent and was out instantly. Then it happened. I don't know how long we had been asleep but a violent thud happened. In the ground. It was under our backs. Like a huge root of a tree being popped by a bulldozer! Then silence. I knew my brother was awake but we said not a word to eachother. Then what happened next was what I can only describe as shallow roots being pulled up like spiderwebs. That's the only way I can describe it. It got silent again for a moment. Then I started feeling the ground moving like kneading dough. Like footsteps with no sound. Weight. Our grandparents when we were kids had a dairy cow and when they were showing us kids how to milk I remember being terrified of how big this cow was and thinking it could step on me. I remember feeling the ground in the barn go down when it stepped as we were milking. That's what I felt as this individual stepped within inches of our heads outside the tent. Nothing else happened that night. We woke up the next morning to roots everywhere. We were rattled. Didn't speak of it for the moment, but I will leave you with a couple notes here. Hiking back down the Haoe trail, just before the Naked ground Slickrock intersection we walked up on a pile of human looking feces golf ball size in diameter a foot tall in the middle of the trail! I apologize for being so graphic. Note: 2. At the trailhead when we arrived at Joyce Kilmer/Naked Ground trail there was a posting that stated an elderly couple were killed by a bear while fishing in Slickwater creek. I have tried to verify that on the internet and was not able to. Just wanted to share this with this channel out of appreciation for this very video!

Thank you. We paddled the lower section which tends to see fewer paddlers than the upper. We also paddled Sun-Friday which I am sure helped. We saw very few people and never had trouble finding a campsite. This may seem insignificant but the only thing I would have changed is to have enclosed water shoes instead of a sandal type shoe like a Teva. So many little rocks got stuck between the soles of our feet and sandals walking along the river. Have a great trip!

We have camped at all of these sites in the Swamp and seeing your video brought back some great memories. -I too have a camera at the bottom of that swamp, but just as I was about to go in after mine, a gator swam past the front of my canoe, about 10 yards from me. SMH. The camera is still there, 12 years later. - I have picture of my buddy napping in his zero gravity chair, with a gator sitting in the water right behind him, that I took at Canal Run. Surely it isn't the same gator, before it lost its eye??? We went to the Swamp, every year for 10 years, prior to Covid, then we just never have made it back...but we have secured our permits for a trip coming up next month! Looking forward to getting back in the Swamp! Very well shot, edited, and narrated video. I enjoyed watching it. Thanks for sharing.
