I used to write Pantser style, but never got past the first chapter. I tried Plotting and lost interest in writing the story after getting the outline finished. I now am a Planter, I plan a loose bare-bones outline of only the next three beats I need to write and pants the story until I reach the end of the first two of the prepared outline and top up the plan to have three unwritten beats planned out. That is how I manage to actually get stuff past the first chapter.

In real life I live by routines (I also have medical issues that require that) but writing wise i'm a pantser. I'm writing my first novel (i'm just starting to take my writing seriously) and I had to start it knowing almost nothing. I got 3 chapters in and it all started coming to me and now I have an outline, of sorts, but it's not super detailed and i'm only 16k in (just began the second act and i'm now in chapter 6) and already my story is continuing to surprise me. I love it! I am also a night owl and due to my routines and my brain I tend to write at night. It's when life is quiet and my body isn't being super demanding and I can write.

haha thanks so much! I agree we like to torture ourselves a little too much! Writing a book in 2 weeks would be so hard but even as I'm saying that I'm thinking... I wonder... A pre-challenge sounds like such a good idea! I like that. Like a little warm up before the bigger challenge starts.

Christie here, from Fun Classic Reads! This is a great vlog. I've often wondered how I'd do experimenting with someone else's writing schedule or routine. I figure I wouldn't do too well, so I haven't tried it yet, and this supports that a little. Honestly my process can be different for every book. Still, you never know what you can discover that would help to become more efficient in your creativity. Seems like it was worth a try!

I don't set a word count goal daily, but I do like to write most days, anywhere from just 5 mins (set the timer, go) to hours/unknown/untracked. It's more about consistency of a habit than it is about forcing the story. Sixteen minutes isn't that long of a video. 😉

Haha you should have seen the hours of footage I went through to cut it down to 16 minutes. I can really talk and this one was pretty chatty anyways 😅 That’s a good rule of thumb I just find for me that if I don’t do it everyday or set a goal for myself I let myself off the hook when I could have done more. It’s less about the output and more about the discipline for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@charleeraewrites I'm not very familiar with dark fantasy, but it sounds somewhat like my story. Basically I like adding twists into the fairytale type idea the reader will have when they pick up the book. For example, in the 'fantasy world', the mermaids and pirates are at war. Not wanting to spoil too much, but the story is somewhat like Jumanji, where the characters start out in the real world and end up in the fantasy world! So far it's been so fun to write!

So, this month, my goal is another 40K of words on my draft one of my current WIP (a contemporary, sports-romance thing but way less tropey than, say, KU trash 🤣). I don't usually do livestreams live because of work or other commitments but often I rewatch later. To be fair, 80K words was a huge goal but all words are good words and more words than before!
@charleeraewrites

yeah the 80k thing was a stretch lol I don't know how I felt so motivated when I made that goal. I do like to make a goal that I think is way out of reach so when I look back at what I actually did and it's more than I realistically thought I'd do, I can be even more happy with my achievement!

I totally stole her "bullet journal" tracker to track my writing (she posts them on Insta from time to time). Because, like they say a lot of times, writing is more than just putting words on the page. I, too, count thinking, vision boards, vibe playlists, etc as writing, and being "allowed" to track that has made such a difference in my writing life.

I hand write all of my first drafts! (Currently doing weekly vlogs until I’m done.) I resisted it for a long time because it felt like I would be going backwards (because I outline on a computer), but I found that to not be the case at all. It helps me to get a feel of how the story should progress. It might change as I transcribe it, but it’s still the best tool I’ve found to getting the story down “right” and as fast as possible.

80K words in a month is a huge goal! Imagine how awesome it'll feel to achieve it in 26 days. Ideal days are great, happy you're figuring out your process/system, but I think to make this our job, we need to be able to write under less than ideal conditions. 😂 (A reminder for myself there too...) My real life is pretty structured but it works for me.

I think 9700 is my best ever day. I also don't believe she's spending every day writing for 12 hours, maybe close to deadlines? (Also, it's the internet so I always question people's stories, esp famous people.) If you feel odd doing the faces, maybe ask someone else (partner or friend?) to make the faces - it might be useful to see how other people interpret differently what you're writing.
@charleeraewrites
@charleeraewrites 4 ай бұрын
Haha yeah I know I searched for a few hours and couldn’t find anything specifically stating her average writing time or stop time except that tiny bit in the article so I just went with it. Some of these authors are really vague about the details around their routines (or maybe they don’t keep track) and it’s so hard to find all the details. But I did my best 😅 The faces is something I do already at my desk but not so much in the mirror and DEFINITELY NOT while recording myself 😂 that’s why I felt so awkward about it. I’m still getting used to talking to the camera. You should see how much crap I cut out because I’m stuttering over my words and sound nonsensical. Maybe I’ll do a blooper reel sometime 😆.
