I have a bypass within the boiler (6 year old Vaillant ecoTEC plus 624) and another one (Myson) at the motorised valves' manifold located some distance away with 28mm pipe copper pipe between them. Both bypasses have to be set to 0.2 bar otherwise I get occasional gurgling noises at the furthest radiator and air in the system. Why is this as there's no leaks at any joints? Is 0.2 bar an acceptable/typical setting and should both bypasses be set at the same setting?
@mrcombiBedford
@mrcombiBedford 3 күн бұрын
Dear 18in80, something is wrong, the Vaillant by pass is fixed, how did you change it to 0.2 bar? a by pass is to regulate the FLOW rate thru the boiler heat exchanger measured by litres per minuet.🤨
@18in80
@18in80 3 күн бұрын
Thanks for your reply. Vaillant sent an engineer to replace the heat exchanger a few months ago as they thought it was causing air to get drawn in but it made no difference. The same engineer adjusted the boiler internal bypass to fully closed in (0.35 bar) from the factory default (0.25 bar) as he noticed there was an external bypass at the manifold. I had very little faith in him as he also adjusted the internal expansion vessel air pressure to 0.75 bar despite my system being pressurised to 1.4 bar; I've since had the exp. vessel pressurised to 1.4 to match the water pressure. A 16L external exp. vessel is also fitted. Page 28 of the instructions states that the internal bypass can be adjusted if noises are produced in the radiators and I found that adjusting this to 8 turns open (which equates to about 0.2 bar) has cured the air problem. As per the instructions - 5 turns open is the factory default of 0.25 bar, totally closed is 0.35 bar and 10 turns open is 0.17 bar. Can air bubbles be produced by the boiler if flow rate is too low due to an insufficient bypass setting? The house is two storey, has 12 radiators, hot water cylinder in roof space and heat only boiler is on ground floor. I live on my own and only ever have 2 or 3 radiators on at any one time. I'm curious if both bypasses should be set the same?

@@18in80 The engineer is wrong, both the EV and fill MUST be the same 1.4bar pressure on your system, (1bar for a smaller system). You are correct in adjusting the internal as per MI. The PUMP creates AIR because of wrong flow rate and lack of enough inhibiter F2 silencer. External auto by pass must end under the boiler return connection, even though the valve is upstairs cupboard, often not done. On one of my VIDs see the by pass under the pump goes across the rig to the boiler return. Find VIDs which show the black E tank at the back of the class. Is there enough space under the boiler? To fit a new auto by pass and turn OFF the old one. Is the pump a UPS3 auto, should be, because a fixed speed would be hard to solve in your house. Hope the helps. George

@@mrcombiBedfordThanks George. I've watched alot of your videos as well as those of other KZbinrs and got your Central Heating Fault Finding book but unsure if it's normal to have a bypass set less than 0.2 bar as i think mine could be set lower. I strongly believe the bypass is the cause of my problem especially as the rads' lockshields are well turned down to give as low a return temp. as possible for boiler condensing to occur and I only ever have a few rads on. Both bypasses are set to 0.2 bar and the system is considerably well behaved but feel if I adjusted it lower to say 0.18 it would perform better. The pump's a Vaillant (Grundfos made) UPM3 and set at auto ('0') speed under D.014, heat output reduced to 8kW under D.000 and target flow temp. set at 62°C. I could fit an auto bypass below the boiler but that would only create about 800mm of a loop and would be so close to the boiler's internal bypass that surely it would serve little purpose? The existing bypass is at the manifold which is 21 metres' away of 28mm pipe from the boiler (42 metre loop) so could having bypass set lower help compensate for it's long distance from the boiler?

My diverter valve has green corrosion on connection points. Doesn't seem yo be any symptoms of failure. Is it worth leaving or worth taking out and cleaning the corrosion off with wire wool?
@mrcombiBedford

Hi Lewis, If it's not broken leave it. to clean use a small wire brush like the size of a tooth brush. Green is a sign of over pressure, lack of inhibitor or about to fail. Over 6 years old replace cheaper than after it's failed. Almost all installers do not update / replace rather than at a certain age replace. 99.9% of my customers said NO wait until it breaks down which cost's a lot more money and stress. I understand not putting it in the hallway opposite the front door but you can install it in another room other than the one you're sitting in IF you make allowances. The 2 places I experimented with on mine were showing a 1C room difference and this was a walk through between 2 rooms that both had their TRV's on max. With people walking past and air fanning it I found the temp and boiler was on/off. I re-sited it in another room a little further away, set the room stat temp down a little and found the temp in the other room was steady. That's the beauty of a wireless one that can be moved around. It's like when people tell you they have their heating on at 17c and are lovely and warm, then you delve into it and realise that it is in the hallway, which IS 17c but the room they are sat in is around 20c, it does take some explaining.

The point is the Manufacturers call it a ROOM stat and provide a picture of a LOUNGE. some installers and specifiers ignore that instruction because "they know best" I speak with Reps. and technical, when they get a complaint 1st question is location, if the answer is HALL, the answer is your guarantee is cancelled call the installer to explain why? Each to their own methods on fault finding but certainly not the way I approach it. Most important aspect for me and first point of call is the end user. A verbal explanation of what the boiler is or isn’t doing. Secondly if possible and safe to do so operate the boiler in each mode, heating or hot water and observe, are they any fault codes been displayed in any modes. Then safely isolate the system from the electrical supply, and remove the cover. Any signs of leaks/water damage, any burn/scorch marks on any component/seals. I would then start fault finding as to the Manufacturers flowchart. Depending on experience you should have a good idea after a visual observation of the operation of the boiler but for me the manufacturers instructions are an essential tool as well.

That I can use with an app to turn it on when I'm on my way home. There's no point in me programming it as I leave home at 05:00 and don't return till 18:00hrs + but invariably I come home to a cold apartment. What thermostat would you recommend for a replacement? Thanks for the great content you put on. Just love room 'stats in drafty halls, so true! I think the whole heating situation in UK is a mess. I'm long retired but involved transporting old folk, often younger than me. You often hear them say they put on the heating for a while, then turn it off, then on again later. I often tell them that maybe isn't the best way to go run it. I recently had a call from a lady looking after the home of a 90+ years old who had been rushed to hospital but was returning home after several days away.Did I know how to turn her heating on as the company who fitted were too busy to call? The 90 year old told her she pressed a button near the boiler to switch it on and off, but she couldn't find it. There was a 'hub' near boiler, pressed button and it fired up. After a search I found the programmer/ stat, set to 'manual' , obviously not used , I set temp to 21 c also noted both HW & Heat set to max on boiler, so never condenses I guess. A modern system with good control but she's not getting the benefit from it. I think this is typical of many households particularly of older folks. A couple of years ago I got a phone call from an elderly lady I know who was in tears, she had been without heating for days, every company she tried were too busy to visit. I was reluctant to get involved, but did. She explained her daughter on her last visit a month before bleed her radiators. I repressured her boiler, all was well! Thanks again.

Hi John, thanks for the comment and so true of UK heating, last point venting rads should ONLY be done by an expert, I hear this a lot that the pressure is not checked at 1 bar even worse they don't know how to refill, impossible to solve. Too often installers fit 'smart' where not needed. I love RF programmable stats, see my videos on this. Have a look at Danfoss Drayton and Honeywell Home VIDs on KZbin about installing and set up. Part exchange the old controls for RF, most cost under 100.00 Call a GS engineer to lower the flow temp to 60c but you must do a heatloss calculation for the lounge and Bed 1 because the lower water temperature may not heat the room to 22c. See my VID "your boiler may not be condensing. Hope that helps, George 🤩👍

@@mohitl1697 Hi Mohit, sorry forgot to reply, re EV there are a few installers and plumbers (who are NOT Gas safe) who think to replace the EV instead of testing. The water is CONDENSATION which should be there and removed every year. I have many VIDs on this but am ignored because the home owner can be ripped off by these people. The problem is too many installers fit parts (guess work or bad advice on media) charge the customer for parts not needed then tell the customer we can install a new boiler because parts not available etc. any rubbish to get a sale. Consumer Act 2017 says parts or goods should be fit for purpose and last a reasonable time, about 6 years depending on part. One problem is a lack of engineers for breakdowns, no one wants to do the grossly over paid job. Only 80.000 Gas Safe installers can do this the rest can't but we have over 22 million boilers to check every year, you do the maths. This situation WILL get worse each year. Massive gap at the top of the pitch roof. Warm moist air will be flooding through the downlighters. Putting insulation is mostly a waste of time if you’re going to leave a gab at the bottom and at the top for the air to flow around. I would expect that your going to see condensation forming on the underside of the sarking felt behind the insulation when it get cold, especially if those down lighters are in the kitchen. Make sure you watch the humidity levels up in your loft. You got it right about the gaps at the eves you need cold outside air to flow in and the loft should actually be drafty so that you can feel the air moving about as that helps evaporate any standing water that condenses on surfaces under the dew point.

I thought these were lubricated by the water flowing through? I suppose they are 'flooded'? Hence they have a bleed screw. The places you put wd40 and grease in, will have worn. Bronze bushes I would guess? Once the exact smooth fit is lost, the pump is junk. Grease can't save it.
@mrcombiBedford
@mrcombiBedford Ай бұрын
Hi Mark, Thanks for comment, WD40 is too watery to lubricate a pump, I use silicon paste on the venting screw B4 it fills up. You are correct all are water cooled, the problem is over pressure, anything over 1.4 will push the stator against the venting screw, pump sizes up blows fuse and possible PCB. Yesterday customer was told 2 bar is OK. ??? Many times an AAV is with the pump housing no need to touch the screw, it's self venting. As the system is draining down water level is below the pump then remove the screw, when re filling as the water spits out spin the motor L & R (not jammed) screw in with paste as above and vent the rads. I must do a video. Hope that helps, 🤩👍 george

Hi. I have a question or two,, recently had a new boiler fitted, a vaillant (glowerm) with vaillant insides apparently ecotfit 430 And 12ltr expansion vessel.. there approximately 21 rads consisting of mostly doubles , 3 towel rails and 2 aluminium vertical rads, all get hot except 1 aluminium vertical, even with all rads turned completely off and boiler & thermostat turned upto max , this one rad isn't getting as hot as it should , originally a 15/ 60 now a 25 /60 pump fitted and still the same .. I've read that it should have a 18ltr E.V . Also the heating guy originally said that we should have at least a 35 to 40 kw boiler ,but fitted a 30, which he said is OK.. any ideas of what should be done

Hi WitMonday, easy, Sounds like ALU rad or valves are faulty, two things the installer should have done, 1: add up all the KW of all the rads.to see the total heat load and see which boiler out put will do, we need 33% spare capacity 2: Use my Heatloss APP to check all the rads are correct size per room, I bet there are not. Is there an external 22mm auto by pass? E Vess. should be at least 18 ltr 24 would be better to stop the pressure rise. (1.4bar) Zones 3 or 4 CH and 1 HW . Balancing will be difficult not impossible. Hope that helps. George Staszak 🤩👍👍

@mrcombiBedford Thankyou for reply. Initially the valves were the wrong around on the ali rad, but there's a few more too, but should still work shouldn't they? The EV pressure when cold is 1.5.bar, the fitter said that's ok and should reach 2bar when hot. How can I tell if ali rad is faulty, it get fairly as I said, but not as intended.

@WitMonday TRVs should be on the Flow for max. efficiency. All heating systems in UK can only rise to 1.8 bar. he is completely wrong, should NOT rise or EV is TOO SMALL. We can allow a 1.5% increase (for you 1.65) NO more. Find someone else and send him the bill 😤

I fitted an aluminium rad recently and it had a hard plastic bung ( shaped like a cork) this was put inside the rad on the flow to divert the water. Download the installation instructions for this rad.

Great channel. Very informative but I have to say I am glad I live in a Bungalow with a much simpler boiler system 😊

Hi Gary thanks for the info. I love bungalows always thought why so few are built in the UK compared to USA and OZ. Big lofts to walk about spare room and storage badly insulated typical British build. All the best 🤩👍
