In NZ we drive on the left, I had a person start passing me then did a left on top of me, I split my helmet in half down the middle and suffered from concussion, I'd bounced off the side of their vehicle removing their wing mirror and then fell backwards onto the footpath. Some drivers are just completely blind to cyclists.

hi there, thanks a lot for nice video, I have a question. I'm shopping for a new bike and kinda convinced I definitely need front suspension fork (my posture on bike is more like mountain bike less like road bike, no drop handle bar only flat) I don't care much about being the fastest person on the street. what is your experience with all those bumps and curbs have you ever thought about a suspension fork?

The bus ramps are sketchy and also often no consideration is given to how water will pool/puddle as a result of their placement. The one heading east on Davenport at Avenue is really bad for this, large puddles that turn into perfect pristine sheets of ice during most of the winter. If it snows, you've got no idea what's down.

When riding paths here in London, I find people respond better with a couple dings then "On your left when necessary.But are confused which left at times. And "thank you" and wave when passing them. Of course, the runners with earbuds are not going to hear you. There is a path around the city which I can take to work. 70 minutes(29kms) of riding in the woods and some roads or about 10 minutes in traffic the direct way. Some of those streetcar tracks are sketchy when the bike lane narrows. And passing parked cars. I commend the balance of being assertive without being obnoxious. The revenge we have on the impatient commuters is that riding a bike releases stress and commuting causes more stress.

@ChapatiMan use more complete designs when installing protected bike lanes. Wider reliefs, two stage turns, separate signal phases, etc. You'd want to limit how often drivers and cyclists interact through I tuitive design like how it's done in the Netherlands. It'd take time to build this out and things will be incomplete for a while, but there needs to be something in every design to address right hooks, at least partially. It can't be an afterthought in the short term.

That segregation you were talking about is minimal due to that narrow buffer and merely having flex posts and them being spaced out so far. The buffer should be like a metre to a metre and a half honestly. The presence of flex posts and vertical delineation gives them the excuse to have a narrow buffer because they classify *that* as protection.
@Servergmr

Nah, protected bike lanes are definitely better than none at all since they reduce the amount of car-on-bike collisions drastically, even with non-protected intersections. They are definitely better than nothing at all and show a city's commitment to proper bike lanes and infrastructure, even if it's not the absolute greatest.

@cycleyyz
@cycleyyz Ай бұрын
@GraemeMacDermid I haven't recently. Any treatment at intersections is better than what we have 99% of the time. Our new Adelaide light configuration has it so drivers aren't to turn while cyclists proceed straight. The only thing stopping them is a "no turn" sign (a cyclist was recently struck on Bloor by a truck that had a "no turn" sign), but it's something.
@GraemeMacDermid

@@cycleyyzI remember my last right hook, maybe 20 years ago, at Dundas and Mutual. After that, I just slowed down a bit and paid more attention to who was on my left, did a bit more signally, and stopped contesting right turns. But I understand that this slows one down a bit. You have good point that the bike lane design on arterials is incomplete as it is now. Montreal is committed to safe intersections with clear separation (poured concrete) and phased green lights.

You're factually incorrect about a lot of this - at least as it pertains to where I am: Ontario. Maybe it's different where you are (which I hope isn't Toronto, since we don't need more drivers that aren't aware of the law. Yes, cyclists are to dismount when using a crossing - so within pedestrian painted lines. However, they are not to dismount at every intersection. Cyclists may take and use the full lane regardless of infrastructure. The only requirement is that they must ride as far to the right as practicable - which is not "possible" and allows for any cyclist to use as much as the lane is required for safety. If you're in Toronto. that police officer was full of it then and you're grossly misinformed. Go learn the laws.
