Well two things come to mind. 1 if the birds mouth is not cut out of rafters. The rafter will want to not Stay put. Even with the metal bracket I can see potential for movement. At least till the collar ties are installed. As well it puts all the load on the outside edge of top plate. Also when you are installing the rake blocks. I’m feeling that wood be made easier. Do to the rafter and block being the same height. Also having the rafter not having a notch in it. Wood make it a bit stronger. I will say it appears nailing the rafter to the plate won’t be as secure do to only being able to put the nails on outside edge from rafter to plate. Myself I will stick with what works and conuinue useing a birds mouth cut.

I always get confused between datum and benchmark because they are so similar, or seem to be the same thing. Obviously they aren’t but I can’t get my head around it
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 10 күн бұрын
Yeah so do I The simplest way to think of it is that the Benchmark has a known height above sea level while the Datun is just assigned a nominal height in order to compare other nearby points. Hope this helps.

Cut in flooring is also for solid masonry builds - like my grandmother's house that was double brick all the way through. You can't have a timber platform when the wall above it is solid brick. Every room has brick walls on all four sides, and every room's floor is cut in separately to all the rest. This goes for modern mud brick and straw bale builds too. Some wall systems have to be continuous all the way down.

Covering the edge of the concrete with soil .. if it's only a narrow margin it won't matter much, but if a homeowner is trying to build a garden bed there, they won't be happy about concrete hidden under the soil around their house. Any plant they try to grow over the concrete is just going to die.
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 10 күн бұрын
It would only be 35 to 50mm from the wall so not going to affect the garden bed much however I actively discourage any garden bed hard up against the house as they make the termite protection null and viod and encouges differential movement of the footings.
@tealkerberus748
@tealkerberus748 25 күн бұрын
The next challenge: You have a concrete suspended floor poured between four walls. Over the years as the suspended floor is subjected to various stresses, it develops lots of tiny cracks - but they're not a structural problem because it's correctly reinforced with steel. Then you realise that all these tiny cracks represent a significant enlargement of the wall-to-wall dimensions of your floor, and it's distorting the outside walls holding it up. Then what?

Hey mate when laying flooring parrellel to a big slider set up to be flush with floor, how do you deal with expansion gap? Recommended 10mm is obviously way too big for attractive caulking bead. Thanks mate legend

Hi Mate, its not a situation that I have had to deal with but you can buy Expansion trims to cover such gaps or make a feature of it with something like this. www.google.com/imgres?q=expansion%20joint%20for%20floating%20floor&imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.profilitec.com%2Fuploads%2Fprojects%2FCBL_AN23_web.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.profilitec.com%2Fen%2Fblog%2Fthe-difference-between-floor-and-structural-expansion-joints&docid=Mskp5APk0BLJ2M&tbnid=mpWb1nv8JEtf9M&vet=12ahUKEwj62POX0o2KAxXUTGwGHejrL6IQM3oECH0QAA..i&w=824&h=563&hcb=2&ved=2ahUKEwj62POX0o2KAxXUTGwGHejrL6IQM3oECH0QAA Hope this helps.

Thanks for the great videos. When packing out the gable end for sheeting, do you need to leave a gap between the battens and end wall? So that the truss can deflect without putting load on the wall?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum Ай бұрын
Hi Mate, if you attach the studs to the trusses in any way, then yes, you will have to allow for the trusses' deflection. Hope this helps

Does the gable end packing/battens get nailed to the trusses and not the top plate? Is it common to use steel (top hats) for the gable end sheet battens?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum Ай бұрын
@@nathandtanner The issue with the top hat is that it is not usually the same dimension as the wall, so it is not suitable for packing. Ideally, the packing should just be nailed to the top plate and supported at the top with truss brackets to allow the truss to move.

@buildsum The video first showed a control joint between two already poured slabs, which made sense. However, it then transitioned to a beveled construction joint, with the control joint still present. This seemed confusing, as a control joint wouldn’t exist when creating a construction joint with the first slab-the second slab hasn’t been poured yet. So, my understanding is that when pouring the first slab, there's no need for a control joint. And when the second slab is poured, a control joint still isn’t necessary because the construction joint already creates a full-depth gap. Is this correct? I would see a need for a control joint in the center if either slab is very long (which was stated in the video).
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 2 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, we really want all the joints to look the same regardless of the type of joint. Yes the top of the construction joint is essentually a control joint but that is just to remain asthetics.

First time learning about hanging beams, but this video is great. If the hanging beam isn’t meant to support any roof load, does the hanging beam have to be resting on walls on both ends of it? If you wanted to remove one of the walls at the end of a hanging beam, can the continuous ceiling joists themselves support the hanging beam?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 3 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, thanks for your comment. The hanging beam needs to be supported at both ends, if you want to take out the wall you will have to install a counterbeam to carry the Hanging Beams. Hanging beams are only required when the ceiling joist can't span the required distance, they do not support the hanging beam, the hanging beam supports the ceiling joists. Hope this helps
