How does the mouthpiece sound in a jazz setting? Would it be out of the texture from everyone else?

@reee9049 if you want a dark jazz sound, it wouldn't work. If you're soloing, or playing lead it's perfect.

What a pleasant memory about the Sinatra brand. Changing the subject, I was curious what mouthpiece Billy Butterfield used to create the very smooth elegant tone that he had. I know it was a Giardinelli, custom made for him so the name, B-1, I think, doesn't help. I tried to email Chris Labarbera, but I didn't get a response. Alternatively, the same question could be asked about Bobby Hackett's mouthpiece since his tone was aboutthesame9. More importantly, I am curious what similar mouthpieces are commonly available today. Obviously, the horns are important to know too.

@robertg7538 huge question. Billy Butterfield played a Giardinelli "BB-1" For his entire career. Bobby Hackett played a custom Rudy Muck mouthpiece. Legends Brass has recreated many of the famous players' mouthpieces. I have a Legends Brass version of Harry James' mouthpiece. I also have a Legends copy of Bud Brisbois' mouthpiece.

My dad loves Frank Sinatra! This version, as my dad is now elderly, actually sounds like this is him singing this. OMG.😞🙏🏼when we look back over our lives and as children seeing our parents age with all that can go along with the aging... Gratitude and memories of the way we (all) were😞🙏🏼❤️ ALL THE BEST to all whomever comes here and listens to this version of this reflective song. Be well, continue to live your life...bc we don't know how much more life we actually have left to live. Live and let live, forgive, let go, smile, laugh, extend grace, feel gratitude and love something and someone ❤💐🤌🏼

I don't think he has been forgotten. But also I don't think he was any way shape or form was innovative the same way Dizzy, Maynard, James, Armstrong, Sandoval, or Miles were/are (in the case of Arturo). With such a crowded field of timely and outstanding players who were able to leave a much longer legacy, he is just thought of on a different level. Certainly for control, strength of range, phrasing, and articulation and decay of the single note, Brooks was a consummate artist. And, he made some fine recordings (as in this one) to demonstrate. Certainly the big band eras' inheritance was made far richer by his (and his fellow band members) contributions.

I have not heard this arrangement before. I knew Conniff was a writer, but was certainly not aware he had the chops to write anything of even limited value (judging from his own recordings), much less something this profound. What a truly exciting arrangement!! I just love all of the unfolding textural expansions (which unfold in some very unique ways, like that b9 that only resolves once the chord of resolution has already passed on--which Conniff relaxes on as long as he can), and how they are explored both in the saxes and brass. Also, there is some really nice color choices in the various trpt. mutes. Also, all of the clean textural changes. (Yes, I am also a writer). And geeze, what a brilliant performance! This is as good as big band music gets . . . Chuck, you are a master for posting this! Thanks greatly.

@@callmeBe I have a complete list of arrangements that Ray Conniff wrote for big bands from 1938-1958. He was Harry's primary arranger from 1946-1954. They eventually parted ways over writing "bop charts." Ray hates bebop! Thanks for the kind words!
@callmeBe
@callmeBe Ай бұрын
@@ChuckParDue1953 Oh boy, thanks! I did not know any of that. For me, the 1950's were some of Harry's finest output. Then that means, "Ultra" and some of those other early 50's arrangements were Conniff's. Wow, I am so glad you wrote that! Yea, for me the big band arrangements that were bop oriented written for Woody, Charlie B., Stan Kenton. Artie Shaw. Goodman, Krupa, and Ted Heath, like this arrangement, are some of the most fun to listen to. I worked with Rex Allen when he lead the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and had a chance to review Billy Finnegan's work. Geeze, what a fantastic writer he was. Again, Chuck, thanks for that information--that gives me some new insight.
