So it's Lionel and Lionel Travels this week, some superb tractors, but I love the traction engines and seeing them put to work again. Some unbelievably good models, if only we could smell the oil, steam and smoke. Thanks for the commentary and your recollections. Take care. Ron

A nice show Lionel, I like the steam engines. I inherited a small one which was my father's. We used to love watching it going along when my brother and I were children; yes, it's old! Thanks for sharing your day out

Oh what a lovely place to spend time Lionel and Mary, it looked beautiful there, somewhere I don't think we have been, but must put it on our list! You did very well to walk all that way down to the cove (and back)! It was nice to have somewhere to stop and have some refreshments. The Abbey was stunning and you got the beautiful views from your room too, what a bonus. To top it off gorgeous weather too. Thanks for sharing your lovely video 🥰 Happy memories made for you both

Thanks Ron. I had first hand knowledge of that place. The camera recovered from its fall. Tough little things, gopros. Today we've been riding the Test Valley Rambler. A Sundays only bus that runs from Andover to Romsey, via all the tourist spots. Yes! I know today was Monday, but it was an extra service for Bank Holiday. We can use our passes, so it doesn't cost a penny.

Happy birthday Mary! I love Highclere! I went on a coach trip there a few years ago at the height of Downtonmania - Lady Carnarvon came on our coach as we entered the coach park - said we had come to the wrong place, as the name board on the front of the coach said we were going to Downton Abbey and that the driver had driven to the wrong place as we had arrived at Highclere Castle!! even the coach driver looked a little confused for a bit! Yes, I remember the no photography rule inside - seems odd as it has appeared all over the world on TV now! Great video, and glad you both had a good time. Take care, Paul
@lionelmarytravels60034 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments Paul. One of the guides said it was because flash photography damages certain interior objects and paintings. Modern cameras don't need flash as much as they used to. Sounded like a lame excuse to me.

@lynnb_and_ky_springer_spaniel It was a beautiful day. I tried to get in last year, but realised I'd have to book earlier. And it worked! The house is full of family photos and others of the cast of Downton Abbey. Mary was in her element, being able to name Almost every one of them.

Thanks Lynn & Ky for your comments. Yes. It was an enjoyable day and the weather was kind to us. Apart from the queen's visit, I've been in there before. I worked for the estate from 1980 to 1983, so not very long, but if the castle required and extra help for any reason, then various farm staff members would be enlisted to help. It might have something to do with the heavy fall of snow we had in April 1982 which brought limbs off of trees. The.trees were in leaf at that time.of the year and the weight of snow caused some to break off. It's a long time ago now, so my.memory is struggling to recall all the details Best wishes Lionel

Thank you for sharing such an interesting place which most of us will never get to see. The lack of sound didn't detract from the viewing. Nicely filmed 👌

Great video Lionel & Mary! As you know I did a monthly vlog from Avebury recently, but I missed so much. I must have missed the court house completely - I never saw it, and I never knew it was even there! Is it behind the barn (that was closed on the day of my visit due to flood damage)? I had lunch in the National Trust cafe - definitely one of their better ones. They even had gluten free vegetarian sandwiches available - the only type I can eat - I usually have to settle for a banana and a pot of tea. Thank you for showing me around - I must return again soon! Lovely video and music. Take care, Paul

Hi Lionel - great video! Haven't been to STEAM since I took my daughter there many years ago. I found this about the 'Camel' loco No 3352 on Wikipedia: "In October 1899 no. 3352 Camel appeared with the final form of the parallel No. 2 boiler, domeless, with a raised Belpaire firebox and a circular drumhead smokebox supported on a curved saddle. A further twenty locomotives, nos. 3332 to 3351, were built between November 1899 and March 1900. Between May and December 1900 a second batch of twenty Camels (as the class were initially known) were built with straight-topped outside frames. These were numbered 3353 to 3372. A third batch, 3413 to 3432 were built between December 1902 and May 1903; these were the last to be built with parallel boilers." Hope this helps! Yes, sadly a lot of train cancellations on the (modern version of the) GWR in recent weeks - seems to be getting worse. Previously, GWR have been one of the better companies in terms of fewer cancellations. Hope it improves soon. I am very familiar with Swindon Station, being at the end of the Golden Valley Line from Gloucester. I often go on to Westbury (via Melksham) and then Devon & Cornwall from there. The Severn Tunnel closure has also been causing chaos, but it was necessary work that needed to be done. Think it is all done now. Such a shame these works were closed - could have been used to build modern electric trains, rather than importing them as now. A waste of skills, infrastrcuture and land. Good that this lovely museum captures what life was like in this incredible loco workshop. Thank you for a wonderful video! Take care, Paul
@lionelmarytravels60034 ай бұрын
Good morning Paul. Thanks for your very helpful comments regarding the Camel locomotives. I must admit it was a new one to me. I actually made two trips for that video. The first one last week took me so long to find the place, that I ran out of time. So I made a second trip this Wednesday to cover Swindon Station and the Traverser, plus the beautiful buildings which are still standing. Couldn’t really understand if what's left of the traverser was once inside the assembly shop, or whether it had been recreated for the museum. But it did explain how they got those locomotives inside. Thanks once again for your lovely comments. They're very much appreciated.
