This is bad information. 1. It doesn't apply to all species. 2. It doesn't apply to captive bred Tortoises. A dry tortoise is an unhealthy tortoise. They can get respiratory infections and pyramidding of the shell. This is all above ground, a desert tortoise gets most of its water from eating plants but gets it's humidity by burrowing and a creating a little thermal and hydric humid hide for itself. Tortoises need heat and definitely need humidity.

Looks like you could use some bevers in those rivers and streams they will slow down your water loss and rehydrate the ground.

Sadly, they don't exist here and would not survive here.

@@Tortoisetrust Bevers survive and thrive in many deserts in the USA place like Arizona southern California, Las Vegas, Texas, Nevada if you start them out in the headwaters of the mountains where there is at least a trickle of water and some trees IMO they will become endemic to the environment and spread naturally.

@@Barskor1 There are no trickles of water around here. Or trees. The environment is similar to Morocco. It would also cause huge ecological problems (as well as being completely illegal) to introduce a North America species into an area where threy are non-native.

@@Tortoisetrust Ok well then you can simulate bever dams those hills and mountains in the video background or the rivers tributaries are where you need to target the dams placement, any kind of fence posts and brush you can scrouge up will do for setting up about 100 or so. I hope you can save your river and all the life that depends on it.

Hi so we don't need to soak them as it often said? but do you agree with having heat and UVB available in an outside enclosure?
@Tortoisetrust5 ай бұрын
Not required in an outdoor habitat, but you might find a mini-greenhouse system with UV-B transmitting plastics helps a lot. See articles on www.tortoisetrust.com

Do you have a facility/private collection? I'd love to see a tour. How's the weather down there? Cheers

No, sorry, we do not.

Love the information you make available. First time I think I’ve also ever seen them in their native area.

Air (ambient) temperatures were mostly around 21-22C but there is a ground proximity effect closer to the substrate.

So intresting. Since I adopted a very old Easter Herman tortoise 🐢 he’s at Least 80 years old after being found in the rubble of a falling building in the Second World War. I’m learning all I can
