You lost me at $75 for four mugs. One can do much better at local thrift stores. A lot of vintage items there. One just have to know what kinds of objects are they looking for. Patience also helps. Never have any specific "must have today" item in mind. Open mindedness, patience and periodic trips get eventually rewarded.

On a very, very tight budget it took me about a year to figure out how to make the kitchen look better. One of the things that was bothering me was the cheap plastic fake marble tile sheet goods that were used as the back splash. Unfortunately, these sheets also went up behind the cabinets. Removing it would mean taking all the cabs down, which were in good shape and the layout was good. Being very glossy, I also didn't like the way the light bounced off. I decided to paint. I gave it a good washing and a light sanding. First coat was a super adhering primer. Second coat was light tan with a pinkish hue in a matte finish. Then, I used two different subtle colors of glazing medium, making lines and swirls. It ended up looking like tumbled stone tile. The glazing did a nice job of sealing and ease cleaning. It held up very well.

Hey Tara! Loved this one! I’ve always wanted a gallery wall but never took the plunge; the intimidation of ‘correct placement’ or getting all the top and bottom frames to line up made me enjoy them in someone else’s room. You’ve given me the inspiration to definitely put at least one in our new home. Really looking forward to…’the next one’. 😊 Have an amazing week!

Hi Tara, another wonderful video from you 😊 I'm still around, but going through some hard times and am struggling with motivation at the moment, so I'm in a holding pattern in terms of getting our home sorted (more "let's not let things backslide" than "let's get on with our plans" type of situation). I have decided to postpone some of my projects, but I have been considering hanging some of our art up, which was originally meant to happen after several other steps. Now I'm thinking it might make everything look less temporary/unfinished and more home-y. I think I told you a while back that we have a lot of art we've collected over the years, just waiting around for us to do something with it, so it's mostly a matter of deciding which pieces we want to display here, and where we want them. I appreciate you saying it doesn't have to be perfect. I think this doesn't just apply to gallery walls, but in general. Making (imperfect) progress is better than waiting around for perfection to do anything.

Hi Tara, another useful and insightful video. I started watching when you dropped your dopamine decorating vid. I'd commented on that one about my journey into color after the death of my husband, how I longed for color. I did a gallery on an accent wall that I'd painted a teal/blue. I hadn't painted in a number of years due to some life circumstances. I also had a backlog of photographs from when I was into photography. (I did sell some pieces at a local gallery and had a one-woman show about 13 years ago). After my husband died; I was able to free up some space so that I could paint again. After not picking up a brush in about 20 years, I started with a 'healing painting' that held great personal value to me. It's the centerpiece on the wall. All of the pieces on the wall are paintings and photography of my own doing, which gives me pride and confidence in myself again. I've gotten a little tired of the arrangement, and your video has given me some inspiration and helpful tips. Thank you. P.S. the dopamine video gave me some courage to go a bit bolder with color. I've since purchased two new rugs and new throw pillow covers. I like it, and that's what matters.

Value is bland, boring, dreary and FUGLY. What is with all of the new home builders vandalizing the homes with 'valueless'? Neutral is BLAND. Would you marry a Bland man? Tara, what is your opinion/thought on putting two accent rugs under a round table, instead of a round rug? I have done this once or twice when I needed an extra-long hall runner. I used carpet tape on the back to hold them together. It can work okay if the texture of the rug conceals the seam, or if it’s a flat weave without a really obvious edge. I was using a striped jute rug where the stripes lined up in a way that concealed the seam really well. 😊

I always love getting a peak into other people's homes, and it's especially appealing with a "tour guide" such as yourself who can help point out some of the reasoning and details that I probably wouldn't have picked up on. My favorites are the first and fourth. I agree with you and Ms. Konig in theory, although I think some of her choices go beyond unexpected/quirky imperfection to esthetically unpleasing (for me it kind of shows like, "My house is mostly traditional to the point of boring, so I'll throw some ugly stuff in to shock 'em and show how sophisticated I am") - but obviously that's just my (admittedly relatively unsophisticated) opinion and everybody is entitled to their own, especially in their own homes! I also think a lot in terms of functionality and comfort of living in the space, e.g., carry dishes of food through the living area to get to the table? Warp your records because they look cool on the vintage rack? I love the scale/color/shape of Heidi's sofa in that space, but I'm curious if it's comfortable to sit on with all of those individual separated sections?? 🤷‍♀ Thanks for another lovely video!
@tarapallaychannel
@tarapallaychannel 12 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment Jodi! I completely understand your perspective about Rita Konig’s home. It is still very inherently “British” in a way that I would never choose for my own home, but there’s something subtly subversive about it that I appreciate. I find her home more valuable for the lessons it offers than for the actual application. There are things about it I do genuinely like, but other things I don’t. Adrian did confirm that records shouldn’t be stacked like that 😉 - I wonder if she is aware? And I suppose lifestyle plays a role in her table placement. I know some people are big on eating on the sofa in front of the TV, in which case carrying food might be less of a concern. But yes, I do agree that function should take priority. I wonder about that sofa as well - it’s not one of my personal favourites, but aesthetically it does look good in that room. She has a separate media room I didn’t show in the video, so maybe that’s where the comfortable sofa lives. Lol Have a great day 😊

I just moved to a fixer upper last August. It has lots of windows, so I ordered a mixed lot of Indian Kantha quilts. You get what you get and because it's a random selection you probably aren't going to like one or two out of ten. They're generally quite vivid with unexpected color combinations. I got 15, cut most them in half and used café hooks to turn them into curtains and Roman shades. I picked out area rugs, etc, to match. I even wound up pairing the ugly 'goldenrod' quilt with purple and it totally worked! Now I'm in the process painting the walls to tie in with the rugs and curtains. (As an extra challenge, I decided all the paint has to be 'miss-tints' - stuff people returned or rejected, so the hardware stores blend in some more pigment and sell it cheap.) I kind of envisioned the overall design concept as being like a really large, 3d patchwork quilt.

@@tarapallaychannel I thought that would be more difficult too - but I live almost directly across the street from both Home Depot and Lowes. I picked out the colors I wanted - then went over every day after work. If one of my colors was there, I bought it! (10 USD for a gallon of 'Oops' paint vs $40-50...) I did keep in mind that some of it was cabinet paint and some ceiling paint... But my new pal at the paint desk helped me work out if it would be OK for the room I planned to paint. Most of the bathroom is cabinets... And I'm planning to paint the bedroom walls and ceiling all the same color... So that worked out just fine! It also helps if you're fine with medium to dark hues. I did manage to get a light 'bone' but for the most part there is very little resembling beige!
