You solved a design mystery for me! I have oxblood red barstools that I love, but otherwise the rest of my home is decorated with misty neutrals, blues and greens (think mountain lake or forested waterfall vibe rather than beach). I never understood why those barstools were so satisfying to my eye when they broke all the other color theory rules. Now I understand how important that counterpoint is!

Oh yeah - with the complimentary blues and greens I bet your barstools look amazing! 😊

I see this done with cobalt blue sometimes which gives a different feeling, i can’t explain it. The blue feels more like somebody who is into art/design, it feels playful and youthful. The red feels more like an everyday person, it feels cozy and inviting. Neither is better than the other, just depends on your style.

Yes I agree! I think using cobalt in this way can also be very cool and interesting 😊

Hello Tara! There was a time when I couldn’t make myself add red except for the Christmas season. Our condo, which we just sold, had an existing accent wallpaper in the foyer in…you guessed it…deep Asian red. I was surprised by such a statement as you walked in the door but, somehow, I loved it! Actually found the leftover roll in the attic and took it with when we moved this past weekend. Painting a frame red is an awesome tip. I’ve used red kettles, small vases, throws and pillow covers as ways to add any color to a room without much of a mental or financial commitment. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if this works with any of the three primary colors. For example, a bold yellow couch in an otherwise largely neutral living room or a blue light in otherwise neutral room. Maybe the underlying point of the theory is to use one saturated (even if not a pure hue) primary color, and that makes the space feel special, designed, & layered with little effort. Like you mentioned, it's playing with contrast and can really add to a room, especially when done with thoughtfulness about the temperature & form of your new focal point.
@tarapallaychannelАй бұрын
Yes I do think this general concept could be applied to colors other than red for sure. It still comes down to finding the right hue and implementing it in a way that works for the space 😊

Red is my #1 favourite colour. My bedroom has a deep cherry accent wall. On my bed there is a wine red throw. On each bedside drawer there is a true red votive candle holder. In the corner of my room, l have a true red night stand with a red lantern. The amber low wattage globe inside the lantern gives a soft glow. On the adjacent wall of the accent wall, l have a print of multi coloured Chinese lanterns. There is cherry red in the wall art. The key to red is repetition as you've said. My everyday plates and bowls are red with black base and the mugs are outer black with inner red. I seasonally switch out my loungeroom decor. In autumn and winter, l use red as decor: a red vase, red in a lampshade, red throw blanket. Red plays happily with every colour ❤

I love that you have fully embraced your favourite color! Sounds awesome 😊

I have a lot of books and CDs in a multitude of colours, including various shades of red. So it's easy to expand on that. I would never have a large piece of furniture or a wall painted in red, but a few small items - lampshades, a vase, a floral display, fruit - work for me in the winter months. For the rest of the year I prefer sunny yellow as an accent colour. My home is white with sage and other greens as the primary colour, so find I can pretty much add any accent colour as the mood takes me.🙂

I'm not sure I'm sold on the theory, but I am extremely fond of red and am pretty comfortable with it, if my red chaise longue that I hauled all the way from my previous country of residence is anything to go by. It goes really well with my green stuff. Also, I have quite a bit of red art. I think it's a fantastic color as long as it's not over-done. Before we found our home, we looked at a place that had a red kitchen, and I don't mean a rustic country red, or even deep red cabinets, I mean bright, glossy, primary red, all over. That was too much even for a red-lover like me, but then I guess I'd probably not have loved a drenched glossy bright green kitchen either, so there's that. The one thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is rugs. In particular, a lot of the classic Persian/Afghan type rugs incorporate reds, or are mainly red, and it's somehow compatible with so many different color schemes and design styles. Of course there's also the more modern rug designs and various regional styles of rugs that include reds, but I have a soft spot for the Persian ones, personally, and I really think they go well with most things. Also, for those who just want to dip their toe in red, they can try it out with a small rug (like for a bathroom), or maybe a runner in a drab hallway. BTW, I've been considering adding some pale yellows to our home as well. I'm still battling the whiteness of our new space, and I think I can make it work with my greens and reds, I just need to find the right hue and the right location. Thanks for introducing me to this new (to me) theory. Your videos are always so much fun, while also being inspiring and informative, I love it!
@tarapallaychannelАй бұрын
Oh that is a very good point about rugs! I think one or two of the inspo photos had red Persian rugs which I think are great and work so well in a variety of spaces. I should have pointed that out! Sounds like your color scheme is really coming together 😊
@unfilthyАй бұрын
@@tarapallaychannel Oh, you absolutely had red Persian rugs in the inspo! In fact, I'm pretty sure one the first ones you used featured one, which caught my eye immediately. I think what might be referred to as my color scheme is still in development... The place we got is very much surrounded by green, and I'm getting into plants and gardening, so bringing in some more green seemed natural. The reds mostly came with our history. Both my husband and I have long had a fondness for bold graphics, somewhere between Soviet and Pop art with a touch of Bauhaus, if that makes sense. So we collected some of those over the decades. Add to that some Rothko exhibits I went to in my 20s that really affected me (I still have a couple of museum posters from back then!), and my lifelong affection for Persian rugs, and I think you can see how the red comes in. The reason I'm thinking of yellow is, again, the location. We get a lot of bright light in here, and I think the white makes it cooler than it needs to be, so I want to pull it more "sunny," and so I keep thinking of painting some of the walls a pale yellow, just for that touch of sunny warmth. I just need to figure out the right way to do it. I want it to feel/look almost neutral, without actually being so neutral it's ineffective. I'd actually really appreciate any advice you might have on that, even in general terms. You always make me think, and I love it.
@tarapallaychannelАй бұрын
@@unfilthyOh interesting! I find pairing yellow with red can be challenging, but it definitely can work. And you could certainly add some green as well. I’ve been seeing some buttery yellow and deep red pairings lately that are interesting - I just added a few to the Pinterest board if you want to have a look 😊
@unfilthyАй бұрын
@@tarapallaychannel Thanks so much! I took a quick look, and I see you also had a Rothko image in there 😊 The butter on the wall in the "ceiling trim" picture is speaking to me. At least the way it looks on my current screen (I'm on an old computer right now). It looks like a hint of freshness without asserting itself too much, which is what I think I'm going for, if that makes sense. I also like the softness and organic feel in the bedroom image with the ceramics in the wall niche and the red lamps. I'll spend some more time checking out your Pinterest, see what strikes my fancy. You always have the best images. This is fun!

Any advice on how to cover a too intense red paint more easily? I’ve heard that a gray can be effective as an underlayer paint color, making it easier to get better coverage, but is the reverse true as well? I would love to cover the too intense red in my master bedroom, but have always been reluctant to take the plunge. Any suggestions??
@tarapallaychannelАй бұрын
Hmmm… I have heard about the gray base idea too. So I guess if you wanted to replace the red completely a gray paint or tinted primer would be good to start with. As for toning down the red, perhaps a plaster or Roman clay finish in a softer red? Then if a bit of the brighter red still came through it would just blend in.

We have white and warm greens -- a dark loden from Donal Kaufman (DKC-65) -- along with dark brown bricks and dark brown wood floors -- and have a bright red Togo sectional. It's unexpected and perfect. A tomato red would have been wrong. Also have MCM chairs covered in mismatched boucherite rugs with bright coulors.

Well, i didn't do pops of red. I have had a red sofa and loveseat for 15 years and still love the pieces. I've seen many design people talking about pop of red theory, but why does it have to be red? Is it not just reflecting the design principle of contrast? Could be pop of chrome in a neutral, more organic space; I've also noticed Yves Klein blue appearing in fashion quite a bit and think it would be just as good as a pop of intense color in decor.
@tarapallaychannelАй бұрын
Very true! I think they talk about red because it is a versatile color that works with a lot of different color schemes, but you’re right - you could absolutely apply this same principle with other colors. And Yves Klein blue is an excellent example! Thanks for the comment 😊
