I have just stumbled across this video and I have brilliant memories from my childhood travel from 1 Lock to Athlone and I would love to cycle it I’m just wondering if the paths are in good shape to travel on Any information you can give me I would be great full Many Thanks 🙏 John
@DriftwoodBoatBlog10 күн бұрын
Hi John, for the most part the paths are in good condition all the way to Shannon Harbour. From there to Athlone you would have to use the road network. Enjoy your trip. 👍

Hi H&M, We passed on Saturday morning outside Carrick on Shannon. We were on a a Linsen from Carrickcraft heading towards Carrick and you guys were heading south; I think it was just before Jamestown. My wife spotted the boat name, 'Driftwood,' just after you passed. Marge was waving, I think. Anyway, it was great to see you on the water, after all the videos we've watched. All the best, Sean.

I'm looking to buy a boat soon, I have no experience, where do I start? We're from Cork but we live near Portumna so hoping to dock one there and use it with the kids before they get too old,

Good idea to do a boating course first. I'd recommend the powerboat course run by Lough Ree Access for All in Ballyleague 👍

The canopy looks great. When I bought my Nauticus 22, I didn't think I would use the cover much but it's permanently up. Great for when it's windy, wet, hot or cold! My cover is getting near the end of its days so I'm researching ideas as I'd like to have a go at redesigning the frame to make boarding easier. Great accents too.

Thanks for another great video. I live up this part of the country and was always wondering what the pot was for. You videos are great and very well put together. Could I ask how you put them together i.e. software, music etc. I'm want to do something similar for a history project I'm working on. Thanks. Sean
@DriftwoodBoatBlog11 ай бұрын
Thanks Sean, ye I use Davinci Resolve editing software (free version) and I usually get the music from the YT library. Hope that helps with your history project. H&M

I do occasionally still use it, but not on the boat anymore. It should reach 200 MTRS and a lot more. Don't know what the latest model is.

I wish I discovered your channel sooner! I was looking for cruising videos on the Shannon as I was a bit blue from my boating holidays there just this first week of September (you were right, we had a beautiful weather with 25 degrees). It would have been really helpful to have all your tips on the hidden & beautiful spots between Carrick-on-Shannon and Athlone. We rented a boat just for 4 days but what a blast it was. Definitely keep your channel in my KZbin subscriptions for our next boating adventures (hopefully next year).

thanks for all the video, we used this great insight to plan our passage from Carrick to Lough Key (day 1), from Lough Key to Roosky (day 2), Roosky to Grange (day 3) and then back to Carrick (day 4). Our cruise was Monday to Friday of last week and the weather was the best this year (2023). we were a bit apprehensive about going thru that small gap to get to Grange, but it was the best part of the cruise - a very special place

Glad you enjoyed it. Salmon poachers sometimes put nets across this section of the river. If the nets get caught in a propeller the result is seldom good! H&M

I went down to the Shannon estuary in 1995 before the development and mobile phones. I never knew anything. I followed a workboat through the barrier they notified the lock in Ardnancrusha. I waited at anchor till Balls bridge looked deep enough and low enough. I anchored then and went ashore to explore Limerick. I spent 2 nights at anchor in the estuary. No echo sounder.Going back I tied up below the lock at Ardnacrusha. I could not get an ones attention at the lock or dam. I walked across fields went to a house they phoned the lock who let me through. Ignorance is bliss. My father and his friends never went below killaloe bridge.

Thank you for another interesting and enjoyable video. I first went on the grand canal in either 1958 or 57. The C.I.E. boats were still running. I remember as clear as anything, with my sister, on early clear dewy mid September morning hearing the thump of the engine and eventually she passed smoke from her chimney, smell of bacon frying, man in long coat and cap at the tiller staring ahead, water running from her cooling and then the noise echoing for ages. It was a completely different country.

Hi Harry and Marion. Great to see another video. Learned a few facts as well, especially about the original plan to cross the Liffey. Something similar was in place at Monastervan originally before the aquaduct. Just some observations on the rail elements of your video. The railway at Sallins is the Dublin Heuston to Cork railway and the first section if that opened from Heuston (then Kingsbridge of course) to Cherryville Jct. which is the junction for the Waterford line on the 4th August 1846, not 1883 as in the video.

Hi glad you enjoyed the video. On digging a bit deeper it seems that the bridge was refurbished in 83 but not built as you correctly said. I'm a bit peeved that I got that wrong.
