A much needed change. If you can't ace the SAT math (with ideally an 800, or a 770+ on a bad day), you're simply gonna get crushed by CMU's CS curriculum. If you genuinely struggle with SAT math, you, quite frankly, shouldn't get admitted into SCS.

@Cookie827722 күн бұрын
@tgreyzero2790 it won't hold you back, but like any other applicant, the other parts of your application need to be stellar, and your essays really need to establish your fit. My broader point was that the CS curriculum at CMU is notoriously tough and math heavy.

I am a Yinzer (a native western Pennsylvania). Carnegie-Mellon, like a lot of other institutions of higher education in the region, is a series of schools and/or colleges looking for a university. I have visited the CMU campus numerous times in more than 50 years. I have noticed that, while the campus is quite diverse, there seems to be no sense of community among the students

1) UC is state colleges thus they should be in favor of the residents in California. 2) If they don’t do that, the gaps between high income families and low income families would be far wider. 3) If students live in poverty and still have passion to learn and thrive yet they have to support their families, how can they have the opportunity to study there? Do they have to give up their education for their families?

I respectfully disagree with your position on AP Human Geography. The content covered by my son’s course was actually quite engaging and interesting as compared to the mainstream social science offering for most freshman at our local high school. It was topical, interdisciplinary, and had clear application in every day critical thinking. I particularly appreciated the way my son developed comfort with using data to deepen his understanding of concepts at the intersection of sociology, politics, and geography. I think there are better arguments to be made about this course being less valuable than the fact that it’s not a science or pure social science. As a parent and someone who has hired a lot of engineers and scientists, I’d like to see more students challenged to think about the world through a nuanced, data-driven lens if they are to perform well as citizens and in a modern workplace.

My daughter is a freshman there and so many parents are asking how she got in. We knew about that 5th year stuff. My daughter took a creative writing which counted as a 5th. This is an amazing campus and they have all ready had so much stuff for parents and the kids got a week of orientation fun. It's a gorgeous town. Right by the beach. A ton of kids are doing dual enrollment in California schools so easier to do the 5th. Also they count it as a 5th if you skip a class or do algebra in middle school. - A 5th isn't required but helps with admissions.

Why can (and do) so many small and large colleges only require applicants' official transcripts while the institutions mentioned in this video require students to transcribe their transcripts (as though those students applying to these institutions also signed up to be court reporters...when the transcripts already exist)?

Is there anyway to see data about course rigor (especially number of APs) when looking at college stats?
@CollegeMeister8 күн бұрын
There is more information included in colleges' annual census data; however, this is very hard to report out because high schools around the country and around the world have so many different curricula. The most selective colleges want great grades in the most rigorous or close to the most rigorous curricula offered at an applicant's high school. Good luck.

@CollegeMeister The reason, I would not consider it a wash for Princeton, is that the percentage attributed to unknown is too large a number to ignore in this equation.This number could skew the results. In the MIT admission data, there were no reported values for this unknown group.

From the data I've seen thus far admissions this year seem to have functioned like most other recent years,. Some selective schools have more or fewer Black White, Asian, Latino, etc students than before the AA ruling. As I predicted before the ruling not much has changed -- the same highly qualified elite students no matter their ethnicity are getting into these schools. As for diversity beyond "race" -- these schools have always been diverse in such a manner -- which is why there are so many conservative politicians, business people, etc
@umkorilla14 күн бұрын
So if you are white or Asian should you not include your race in your common app? Will it hurt to include it or write an essay mentioning your ethnic heritage?
@luimulder376814 күн бұрын
I agree with Craig on everything he said after minute 15. I also agree with what he said about diversity needing to go beyond just race and ethnicity. Where i disagree is the idea of taking a political survey to pull students of different political backgrounds. It may just be me but it seems most 16 and 17 years olds do not have political leaning. Even if they do they have yet to take a philosophy class to really solidify their thinking. In my opinion the best way to pull diversity is by selecting students from all 50 states.

So if a white kid attends a city high school that is 70% minority and has SAT scores of say 1400 when the school profile average is 1150, will Brown have a way of knowing that the kid is white and not actually a minority? Meaning does the process they are saying they will use moving forward benefit ALL kids from that school or only those from certain races and if certain races then how is that any different than just using their race outright? It would be great if it benefited all students from the same school equally but I can't tell from this video if that is true -- meaning will they still know the kids race in the end and not give the benefit to the white kid from the school in the city?
@luimulder376814 күн бұрын
Schools cannot use race as a factor in itself. If an applicant is from a majority underserved high school and the applicant's application shows no signs that they are of one race or another then that applicant, again regardless of race, will be given preference since he or she is coming from that community, AND DOUBLY for having a 1400 SAT score. Now if that applicant reveals that they are from an underserved minority then they will have a third advantage for acceptance, a preference OVER other applicants. In a nutshell, yes, the white kid has an advantage for attending that city high school you aforementioned.
@HP-ov7ol14 күн бұрын
Keep shining the light on these woke admissions departments. They are determined to get around the spirit of the law and use de facto affirmative action to engineer a class that is diverse in outward appearance but nearly monolithic in world view.
