Could you use a timber hitch? it's the knot used to tie classical guitar strings on, as well as one of the many knots that were used for tying on old gut banjo strings.

This is similar with a lot of instruments too. I just bought a Nagauta shamisen to learn and I was wondering this as well. I'm normally a Banjo player, and it's similar in the fact that there is the instrument and they have 2 different styles of Banjo. But you can either do the bluegrass 3 finger style or the clawhammer or folk style. You don't have to have one or the other to play the specific style of music. It's crazy how two very different instruments can be similar and different in many ways.

Is there any new synthetic skin on the market that create a warm tone?
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen 11 күн бұрын
I don't think there's any synthetic skin specifically for a warm tone, particularly because the ultimate goal has been trying to recreate the sound of tightly stretched natural skin. With that being said, Hibiki sounds warm if stretched at a lower tension. :) (Sorry for my late reply, was out of town!)

Here's a tip I learnt from using friction pegs on East Asian instruments: if you rub a bit of tailor's chalk on the contact areas of the pegs, they'll stop slipping.

I have been watching videos for the Shamisen for at least a year to see whether or not I will pick this up. What I noticed is that on many of the cheap ones, under €500, Shamisen the neck is often much shorter than on the ones above. My question in this regard is: when learning to play a Shamisen for adults over 1m75cm, is it more convenient to choose a Shamisen with a neck length that is comparable to the more expensive type? thx
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen 18 күн бұрын
That's a very good question! In my opinion, "tanzao shamisen" (short neck shamisen) are really fun to play whether the player is beginner or advanced. However, I will say that the standard length is more convenient because it has an adhesive position mark strip accessory which makes playing much easier than a blank neck (I don't believe the short neck has such a strip). But otherwise, the short neck is a great type. :)

I recently moved near the beach with a lot of humidity and the skin at the top of my shamisen became unglued and seemed to have shrunk D: what can I do to fix it because it peeled from the tension
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen Ай бұрын
Oh noooo!! Unfortunately once the skin has unglued, the only fix it having it replaced with a new skin. :-S Synthetic skin is usually best in high humid conditions because the glue is unaffected by moisture. Thank you for the demonstration! Surprising tone, pleasant and woody just like you said. This one seems to struggle with sustain, the notes fade out quickly. Also the tuning drifts toward the end of your demonstration. Would you say these qualities are representative of this shamisen compared to your other models?
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen Ай бұрын
Good observations! Indeed, I believe because the tone is warmer, the sustain tends to fade quicker, and requires more vibrato to keep the sustain sustaining. (Shamisen with colder tone tends to cut sharper tonally, and thus the sustain lasts longer) However, the drifting tuning was a factor of the strings being new and still stretching. In retrospect I should've waited until they stabilized before filming, but I felt in a hurry to make the video. 😅So that would've happened with any shamisen strung with new strings. :)

Isn't the word jonkara The japanese word For the sound a shamisen makes when hitting the string a certain way? For example, the song by Yoko Nagayama, Jonkara Onnabushi, Is about jonkara And the lyrics make it sound like she's talking about a boyfriend or being dumped or something . Then I heard that jonkara is the jong jong jong jong. Sound, that a shamison makes. So that song is really talking about her love and commitment for the shamison. when I hear the word Jonkara, I think of the sound at Minute 114 or 1:42 or several other parts like It on this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6S4gZukl7-ErqMsi=XmvFb0vWIS6nvatL
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen Ай бұрын
That's a good theory, but I'm pretty sure isn't the case (although I could be wrong). Jonkara Bushi is originally a folk song, and in those days shamisen was just a backing instrument. Furthermore, I found a site with the lyrics for the folk song Jongara Bushi, and of the over 40 verses, shamisen is only mentioned once. (senshoan.main.jp/minyou/tugaru-word.htm) Tsugaru Shamisen became an official style in the 1970s and then surged in popularity, which I believe is why Nagayama san's Jonkara Onnabushi (which was composed after "Tsugaru Shamisen" became a marketed style) poetically references shamisen in her lyrics. But in most traditional Japanese folk music, the lyrics are about the region or workers (songs of the mountains, lakes, fisherman, etc), rarely about the instruments.

@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen 3 ай бұрын
Good question! I think walnut could technically work, but it would definitely need a hard fingerboard. Also, being a relatively soft wood, it might swell when wet sanding, which can result in the sao being bumpy after finer sanding. That was my experience with making a koa shamisen (which has a similar hardness). If you get the wood stabilized, then there's no issues. :) I'd be happy to put a new skin on!

Wow!! 🌠🤩This video is a valuable lesson on 'the fear of bad habits' and perfectly visualizes how 'good habits' and 'fear of bad habits' like vectors work against each other. I completely agree-this applies not only to Shamisen, not onyly to all instruments or all arts. It's a lesson for life itself. I've been in that place where fear really held back my progress, and I wish I'd seen this video 30 years ago. 😅 My father is also a musician, but he's old-school. My motivation, joy, and energy for music were often diminished by fear and by rules that clashed with my passion. After watching this, I can't help but wonder how I even made it this far. 🤣
@TsugaruShamisen
@TsugaruShamisen 3 ай бұрын
I'm glad my thoughts are useful for you! In general I find this whole kind of topic fascinating, understanding and appreciating how fear plays a huge role in our lives, whether it be studying a new art or just day-to-day life. There's the tricky balance of making your best effort without being afraid of the results - not having expectations for yourself while still striving to be the best you can be. A lot of self-reflection goes into achieving that balance, but it really makes a difference!
