Hi! I know this video is 4 years old, but hopefully you can answer a question for me. I have an RX73 and need to replace all three of the transaxle idler pulleys. I got the 2 flat plastic ones on ok, but how do you remove the metal "V" groove pulley for replacement?

Hey man, good to hear from you again. I remember you doing this. Well honestly as long as it runs good does it matter if it has the less performance heads. Have you noticed a big difference in performance? Maybe you remember, maybe not I have quite a few F150s. My black 97 with the 4.6 has blown mysteriously, I suspect a leaking injector or 2 because it was hydrolocked and like an idiot I hit the key again. Seriously bummed me out , it was a good truck and everything including the air worked. Now I have a 2003 with the last 2 valve 5,4 which personally I'd rather have than the newer 5,4. Great truck but it is VERY rusty. Then my 97 plow truck and my wife's 98 both with 4,6s. Great engines but not nearly the power of the 5,4. Take care my friend
@MrUbiquitousTech
@MrUbiquitousTech Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! You know, I really don't know, I bought the truck with a blown head gasket and didn't drive it other than around the block before pulling the heads off. That 2003 is the best of the 5.4s, the last of the 2 valves and they fixed the spark plug issue for that year. Yeah, the 3 valves are problems with those cam phasers, didn't work out so well. Then they went from bad to worse with the Ecobost, lol I _won't_ own one of those. The 4.6 is the superior engine, but yes, the 5.4 does have the power.

So, you got it running,but not with the performance heads? What kind of performance are we talking about here? What happens to the heads you still have but not installed?. @MrUbiquitousTech

Thanks Dave! The original heads needed a full rebuild + the cam lands looked kind of washed out. It was cheaper to buy a good used set of heads. If only I had known about the year change. But even if I had them fixed now, those MLS head gaskets and head bolts are kind of expensive. So the engine went from 260hp to 235, 25 hp loss. Stinks, but that's the way it goes for right now.

I see this is a rather recent upload. I have an old GE Profile with this transmission part #. (2001 - it had been working fine...) Recently it would not spin. I sanded the clutch "friction shoes" and it has worked fine for over a month. Today it wont spin. The motor turns but it seems as though the transmission lock ups immediately. I took off the belt and I can hand turn the tub pulley in the agitate direction and it turns fine. When I turn it the other way for the spin cycle it turns a little then it sounds as though it hits a metal pin and stops dead. I can turn it back and forth to "bump" whatever it's hitting and it sounds like metal-on-metal hitting in the transmission. If you read this and have any suggestions... thanks.
@MrUbiquitousTech
@MrUbiquitousTech Жыл бұрын
It does stop as far as the inner working in the transmission go, then it spins the entire body for the spin cycle. If the body won't spin then I'm going to guess the lower bearing failed or seized.

Hey Mr. Ubiquitous, great video! Glad I found actual footage of the cam/head bolt/timing issue. I'm about to do this project myself on a 98 F250 5.4 2v. I'm a novice but have recently learned to replace intake gasket and valve gasket. Turns out heads need to be done as well. I've researched everything possible and timing is definitely area of biggest concern as you say. Your procedure here seems to finally be making sense, I'm most confused as to locking the cam tool. Does this procedure also refer to removing the heads? With crankshaft key @ 12:00, meaning pistons are down, then valves can't contact even if cam violently turns, would the cam lock tool be unnecessary for removal to get out all bolts? To install you say to put the heads on, then use the cam lock tool, then clock the camshafts at 11:00 & 12:00, but do they turn when the lock is in place? And turning the crankshaft, without the timing chain, does that still turn the cam shaft? I sincerely appreciate any feedback, thanks in advance! Matt
@MrUbiquitousTech
@MrUbiquitousTech Жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. Yes, you could in theory remove the heads like that, with the pistons below deck you're not in any danger of the valves hitting the pistons. The problem you might run into though by not locking the cams that will put a lot of tension on the timing chain possibly making it hard and/or unsafe to do so. There is a lot of tension on that cam as the valve springs are very strong. On turning the cams with the tool in place, you have to slightly loosen the bolts on the tool, just enough where you can turn the cam to clock it, then tighten them back down. Too loose and the cam will spin. Yes, with the chains off turning the crankshaft will not move the cams. Hope that helps.

Yes, it is together and running. I do need to do a follow up video. I understand, it's quite a job. It can be done obviously, just take care to get the timing part right (and assembly), it's the one tricky part to this job. Make sure you see the designated part of this video I flagged above, it _is_ the proper procedure.

Do you have a replacement seal? I do know of kits you can buy for this transmission. Make note of the condition of the shaft where the seal rides. There may be wear on the shaft and would cause it to leak in the future. You can buy a kit that comes with new shafts, seals, bushing...etc.
