My issue with Canon is the cost. New Canon mirrorless glass is the most expensive there is. Too rich for my blood. Also, Micro HDMI? C'mon Canon. I know Nikon ergo's are not perfect, but their files are amazing and I can afford the gear.

I had the chance of trying out this lens at the local Nikon exhibition yesterday. The only problem for me was its weight, which can be solved with a monopod or tripod. Other than that it's a very good lens, especially considering the price. Definitely will grab one when I save enough money.

Very informative. I also own one of those 400mm 2.8 AF-Is and I don't blame you for not wanted to drag that thing out of the closet! I do wish Nikon would get off its @ss and make a screwdrive compatible FTZ adapter however. Its a gateway for older togs such as myself to buy into the new Z system. Moreover, Sony made a screwdrive adapter for their older Minolta lenses so it obviously can be done. If Nikon doesn't want to build and sell it, some other 3rd party should cash in on it. Its a void needing to be filled.

You didn’t mention the two autofocus lenses, 80 and 200 mm which were made for the F3AF. They will also autofocus on the F501 and F4, but not on any other bodies. Were all AF-S lenses type G or were there any with aperture rings? Were all AF-P lenses for DX format, or were there any for FX? I don’t like the fact that the AF-P lenses don’t have a real focus ring but just have one which turns continuously and doesn’t actually focus the lens but just tells the camera to focus it closer or further. This means that you can’t have a focus scale on the lens, and therefore cannot focus by scale.

If you're in the USA, dial (800) APL-CARE and they'll walk you through it. I've never had this happen, but if I had no other help (call Apple), I'd erase and reset the new phone, then try over again. If that stops again, you could try with another way (like restore from an iCloud backup). One caveat is that if you have an Apple Watch and/or SIMless telephone account and did get transferred and then you erase and retry, that you might need more work or contact your phone company to get those going. Again, (800) APL-CARE in the USA will get you going - if you're in the USA. Good luck!

Thx for this review! Looks like a perfectly decent lens stopped down s bit, and here is my question. I see quite a few YT reviewers complain that some kenses are not sharp corner to corner wide open. I always think "well duh.. how can it possibly be?". The only case that will ever happen is shooting something very tlat like a wall at some distance where the wall is perfectly perpendicular to you. It seems perfectly normal to me that a fast lens wide open can't look sharp corner to corner in real life because it's impossible. What am I missing here?
@KenRockwellTV6 күн бұрын
You’re mostly correct: corners are almost always out of focus with teles so sharpness is irrelevant. It can matter shooting distant landscapes and ridges, astronomy, and as you can see even with the Porsche photo stopped down this lens failed. Works fine for portraits. Thanks!

@@KenRockwellTV Thx for the reply! The Astro case makes sense for sure. If it's bad stopped down then it's clearly an issue and I've seen other reviews noticing the off-center issue you talked about. Very nice to see cheaper but still decent to good options coming out.

Thank you for all of your amazing reviews! If you were going into aviation photography after years of other photograpy; what body/lens combo would you pick? This lens with the Zf, or the R6mkII with the Rf 200-800, or the R5 with the RF 100-500?
@KenRockwellTV7 күн бұрын
By aviation do you mean air to air or air to ground or ground to air? It’s tough to say since I don’t know so what you’re doing, but the 100-500 has the broadest range. If you need longer, use an APS-C camera like the R7 or R10. The 200-800 is slower and might be less applicable to aviation as you probably need fast shutter speeds to stop camera motion. Aviation is a huge field. I’d not buy Nikon for Mirrorless, Nikon went obsolete with DSLRs even though they’re still popular with people who shot Nikon years ago. Thanks!

Also, as a semi-pro motorsports shooter, I find that the vast majority of my clients (competitors, their family and team plus online media), absolutely DO NOT need more megapixels. Apart from the hassle of transferring big files over the interweb, most people will only view the images on a computer or smartphone. Almost nobody these days wants to make big prints. LOL - trashing the dials at the top because they're not modern when the intent of this camera is to provide a retro feel and look. Sure, it's a niche market and not meant for those who want a modern camera feel. I have a Z8, Z6ii, Z7 and a Zf. I absolutely needed the Smallrig grip, but now I'm off to the races with the Zf and I absolutely love it. It's not a Z8....we know that. But I have absolutely no buyers remorse with the Zf even with the Z6iii now out. Image quality is fantastic, I like having a flippy screen option and the eye autofocus actually works great despite what this video says. Auto - ISO? I just reprogram the video record button to ISO and use the command dials which is very little difference than my other Z cameras. The problem with this review is that it doesn't start with Nikon's intention for this camera. Calling it a poser camera is ridiculous and misses the point of the launch entirely......can't believe Ken would make this comment (poser 40mm f2 lens, sure). In my opinion, Nikon nailed it with this camera.....there's very little difference in my workflow and button assignment with the Zf vs the other Z cameras which makes it easy to switch between. The missing joystick is THE biggest issue I have with this camera. Take this review with a grain of salt. This is a great camera. If you have the funds for a Z8, buy that of course. Want the best ergonomics at a lower price, buy a Z6ii or Z7ii. Want a fun camera that performs better than a Z6ii but not at a Z8 level, the Zf is a fantastic choice. It keeps the same great Z6ii dynamic range (better than Z6iii) with better cAF than the Z6ii at a better price than the Z6iii. It's a pretty sweet option. And that's not to mention the quick B&W switch that I love.
