Using the 3D style was a good stylistic choice. the use of 3D really emphasizes that what you are watching are not human and in a way supposed to be unatural

With all the shines and these stuff it would had to be a nightmare for the animators to animate it into 12 full episodes.I pretty understand why they decided to use CGI instead of 2D. Fun fact, Houseki no Kuni and Beastars are the only anime series that are full CGI that I'm able to watch without ripping my eyes out. And that's great

3d was the right choice for sure- shading the gems in 2D would have been a complete production nightmare

The 2D looks amazing, in this barely two minute-long promo trailer with consistent cuts that is. Sure a still image or a three-second long cut looks awesome in 2D, what with the expressiveness and charm of the medium or the concentrated (key word: concentrated) high level animation. However, two minutes of trailer does not compare to twelve episodes, there is no way the level of quality could be maintained throughout this series due to the complexity of having gemstones (with all the light refraction and shining that comes with it) be a main element of the show. I just can't see the constant sparkles and shifting lights maintaining the same quality, movement and care after the first two episodes, gradually they'd disappear and be replaced with still shots or even simplified models with less lighting, with some occasional upgrade in the animation for important fightscenes. Speaking of fightscenes, we have to mention how hard those, especially the gem cracks (with, again, all the properties gems have) would be to animate. Keep in mind that this isn't a single shot of a cracked gem surface, this would be a constantly moving surface that would have to contend with light changes and dynamic angles for a lot of consecutive frames, that's insane. Of course they could also ignore light sources and shading as a stylistic choice, but then a lot less people would be praising the 2D version for it's personality and charm. The 3D version might look slightly rougher or stiffer, but that's because it's a short video with constant cuts that don't allow for the dynamicism of 3D. The gems lack their little charming sparkles, but that's because the cartoony 2D version needs the sparkles to emphasize they're gems, while 3D models can achieve that through generated light refraction and the weight given to the models, which feels alien and inhuman, because the gems aren't supposed to be made of flesh and bones, but purely gem. The 3D models save up a lot of budget for the character models, especially in this case what with the literal gem hair and whatnot, and if used well (which it definitely is in this case) allows for prolonged scenes without burning out animators or a drop in quality. 3D has a weakness in its facial expressions and character acting, but this show cleverly sneaks in 2D shots when it comes to close-ups of the face and eyes so the scene doesn't look too stiff. However in order to have the 2D shots blend in with the rest of the scenes, the style had to be blander and match the stiff 3D models. Overall, I can see why the 2D version seems appealing in this specific video, and the style is definitely more attractive and creative than 3D models, but that's as far as the perks go in terms of quality and consistency.

As much as I loved the 3D animation and wish to see it again with how Studio Orange has improved, I think I actually love the 2D animation more. The expressions are more pronounced and everything feels like it's from an art piece. My favorite detail is how the green glow lands on Phos's shoulders and surrounding surfaces that gives off that extra beauty. Now there are certain things that the 2D lacks like the weight behind the gems and the desaturated background colors, but I think that could be fixed. I would actually love it if it was a combination between both animation styles to see what gorgeous art we could see. Either way, I hope we get a season 2 and soon because this show is something that I miss dearly and should definitely be revisited.

2D always… 3D ruined the world of animations (I’m sure about that. 3D is just a way to create more and more contents with no quality. Ofc this is not the case, but I’ll always prefer 2D)

The 3d feels a bit stiffer but it also kept the quality of the animation more consistent than I think it would've been in 2D.

yep, in the 3D they definitively toned down the shines and reflections, which is weird since it "should" be easier to do in 3D... I guess they thought it would distract from the better texturized hair or something like that. Personally, I think I prefer it shiny ^^

Wow it's hard to understate how much more personality and style the 2d animation has. Now that being said, having watched the show, I think the animators really do take full advantage of the specific pros of 3d (dynamic camera angles in action, advanced lighting effects especially with the gem hair, etc.). Either option has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

Both approaches are beautiful, strong work. But for me some of the 2d sparkles are very distracting. I like them both a lot but I think I'd like the 2d more if it had fewer white Sparkle Stamps
