I’ve owned birds for years and I see myself as previously a terrible bird owner because I followed what pet stores said. When I got my first actual parrot she had her wings clipped poorly and it permanently stunted her wing growth to the point she couldn’t fly for around 4 maybe 5 years, for the type of bird she was that was half her life too… she was bought by a “breeder” and unfortunately free flight would of been impossible for her. I recently got a cockatiel and I was told her wings hadn’t been clipped but unfortunately I see evidence of it since she has a few feathers that are clearly cut. Thankfully my cockatiel doesn’t have permanent wing damage, she can fly just fine but my brother’s bird who was bought at the same time has visible damage that I’m concerned may be permanent… it actually made me look into the effects of wing clipping more, I knew it was an issue and I have never clipped my birds wings especially after how I saw it effect my first parrot with her becoming emotionally negatively effected and physically unhealthy… searching for more information is actually how I found your channel! I’m hoping to help my birds recover, I can see what wing clipping has done to my cockatiel making her anxious and my brother’s bird needs some sort of physical rehabilitation… it’s upsetting… if you have any tips on what to do to help them, please let me know, I would appreciate it greatly!

Why don't you free-fly with cockatiels with other mutations like the white one, for example?
@ParrotVolancyАй бұрын
@@Kauan75805 The only reason I had to stop with Ki-ok is she has too much anxiety and will do nothing but tree-sit until she absolutely has to come down. It just wasn't making sense for her. She also has an issue where she plucks herself and other cockatiels. Nothing medically wrong was ever determined. I think her anxiety disorder is genetic due to inbreeding, so I only acquire wildtype cockatiels for free flight now if I can help it. However, these five babies have a mix, including white-faced (Baby #2 in this video and Baby #4 who will go this weekend) and pied (Baby #5, who will go this weekend). It's just that when you choose a cockatiel with multiple recessive mutations, you are increasing the chances of something being genetically wrong. Lutinos are also not a good choice for free flight because they have worse vision.

For anyone considering free flying any of these species-please do your research. Cockatiels are found almost strictly in arid regions with little vegetation, are nomadic, and have high speed wings that work poorly in heavily vegetated areas. They literally survive by being faster and outlasting predators in flight. Sun conures are sort of middle ground-they’re typically found on edges of forests. While not as fast or as athletic as cockatiels, they shouldn’t really be flown in dense vegetation either. Green cheek conures are true forest birds, and it’s reflected in their wing shape. Notice how their wings are rounder than sun conures and cockatiels. This gives them a high amount of agility, but makes them slower. They would do great in a more forested area, but will most likely fail to outfly another bird in an open habitat. The peach faced lovebird, like cockatiels, are also found in arid areas. They aren’t as fast as cockatiels (not many parrots are), but they make up for it in intelligence and agility. They probably will not fair well in forested areas though, as their high speed wings will perform poorly in that environment.

I was in the middle of responding to your comment when I decided to pin it, because I am such a strong believer in species-specific location selection and research to inform our free flight practice. Unfortunately, that apparently deleted the comment I was typing, so I'll have to come back and respond when I'm not so tired. Thank you for the awesome and informative comment! People should definitely not attempt free flight without a mentor who knows their species.

I'm not sure if you mean for a free-flyer or a bird who gets out accidentally. Either way, it's a good idea to try and entice them with food and to have other cockatiels with you to encourage them down as well.

It's definitely something you should only attempt with a mentor's guidance. It's pretty normal for birds to land in trees and take a little while to fly down while learning, though. Smaller birds are safer flying in numbers, also.

Hello there i have come from Mikey the macaw and friends as i will have 2 budgies and maybe just maybe a cockatiel bird 2 maybe so let's say i get two budgies i want to free fly them what would be the past way to do that same with cockatiel
@ParrotVolancy Жыл бұрын
Hey there. I just wrote three paragraphs and accidentally clicked out of the text box, so my entire reply is gone... While I think it's awesome that you're interested in free-flying, the short version is that budgies can really only be free-flown as a flock from an aviary and that cockatiels are also very difficult to free-fly. They are not anywhere near as easy to fly as macaws (though macaws come with their own challenges). If you are interested in learning more, I recommend reading back on my Instagram posts to learn more about the challenges associated with cockatiel free flight. My friend @birdsnamedafterherbs on Instagram can tell you more about budgie free flight, but that's even more difficult to do. If you try to attempt flying any of your birds without a mentor or the right conditions and preparation, you will lose them. I also have a Patreon where you can learn a lot more about cockatiel free flight, if you're interested. patreon.com/parrotvolancy

Do you have an idea of why she took longer to learn decent. Is there any reason she would have had more trouble? Or is it just that every bird is different
@ParrotVolancy3 жыл бұрын
Well, for one thing, she flies like a fighter pilot. XD She did such big, fast flights with sharp turns, it was almost like she was just too energetic to slow down. Part of it may also be that she as an individual just needed more time to recover between flights, which is not surprising considering how long and exuberant her flights were each time. She's also Ki-ok's daughter, so she may have picked up a little tendency to tree-sit, but she wasn't showing any signs of anxiety, and her flight skills were really awesome, so I'm thinking she just needs a bit more repetition. It was only her first day, so it's too soon to say exactly how she'll develop with more practice.
