Hi Guys, I wanted to share my exp. I bought this pedal used in a mint state for 80$. From the start I did not like the depth and clarity in lower end tones, especially when playing riff and chords, mid and treble were sort of inn-responsive, with a little to none effectiveness when combining color of the tone. What i did is actually just removed C22 capacitor and voila, the pedal is a different beast, sort of combination of Boss DS-1 and original MK1 sound blended together. Mid and treble are highly sensitive now and only harshness that I can see is when I crank the knobs from 3 o'clock and higher on gain and volume while using high amount of treble and mid to the sound. Anyways, perhaps I will try this setup later on, but I highly recommend at least that you guys do C22 removal, as your pedal will be on a whole new level. My setup now is: Gain-3 o'clock, Deep-9, Bass-2, Mid-12, Treble-10, Tone-3. All the best.

Thanks 😊 the mic on the side is a bit of a trick I like to use. These mics are very directional, specially at high frequencies, so placing them at 90 degrees like this helps take out a lot of the harshness.

A troubleshoot for my pedal 😬, just to understand, whats the reason of these 2 diodes added? How much voltage does it should drop? Because on mine it is barely sounding, not sure if the shop sent me the right diodes

This video is old but I thought it may be useful so I tried the steps for my use case. I am trying to get a windows application to see a bluetooth device connected in macOS. I adapted these instructions to create and add a link to tty.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port. It did not work. Would you have any ideas for this?

personally, i think t'his is not "a great sounding pedal", my PAL800, my revival drive hot rod, sound way better than this, i don't understand the hype around these things, it's a box with resistors, capacitors pots and a switch and with poor quality compared to those these day's, there is not even a "secret component in it, i would never buy this pedal

I've had a mark 2 for over 10 years and have barely used it as I built a distortion. With the mods it not only sounds great but it's really versatile and by experimenting with, say, a lead tone, I find that the same tone is a little tweak away from a rhythm tone that I wouldn't have considered. Thank you

Just found this video as I was preparing to sell my ca. 2000 GV-2 (marked GV-1 on the board). Sadly, it spent the vast majority of it’s life in the box and not on my pedalboard, despite the C22 mod. After watching this, I had to try making the changes to mine, and WOW! What a difference. I have a few MIAB pedals here, and I’ve spent the day determining that the modded GV-2 ‘stomps’ them all. Thanks so much!

Love the mods. I did want to verify two things. I lifted one leg of the diode D1, soldered he two added diodes in the correct (same) orientation and then back into the hole/pad where I had taken D1 out of. Hat is correct? Also, I do notice the volume range is lower on the modded pedal. It’s no big deal, I can make it up by cranking volume up, but for similar settings the unmodded pedal has more output. Is this expected?
@shader26
@shader26 3 жыл бұрын
You know what, in my eagerness, I forgot two of the mods, because they went replacements, I forgot to remove one resistor and forgot replace another with a wire, which I now have done, even BETTER sounding! So happy with this, I think it might have helped also with volume. That it is closer to the range it had. So my bad. I’d recommend these mods to anyone. What a thorough job he did here, and also love the explanations for the design issues of this pedal as it comes from Marshall. Have no idea why Marshall didn’t think of these things. But very glad I found this! On to mod pedal #2 !

I meant “because they weren’t replacements or components” as I made a lot of all components to be changed, but forget the removals.

Doesn’t matter, just make sure the two you add are in the same “direction” as the existing one (so current can flow through).

@@joesimonaudio6738 What are the consequences of not adding the 2 series diodes to the circuit in your opinion? I’m not sure I completely understand the explanation in the video.
@joesimonaudio6738
@joesimonaudio6738 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sid-np3hf the purpose of adding the two extra diodes is reducing the supply voltage for the opamps. This is done to compensate for the increased dynamic range that the newer opamps in the MkII have compared to the old MkI. So if you don’t add the diodes, it will have a slightly wider dynamic range (and also a little bit more volume). The changes won’t be dramatic but they are there.
@joesimonaudio6738
@joesimonaudio6738 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sid-np3hf I did make a mod for the BB2 that takes it relatively close to the original (with some extra spice), but making videos is a lengthy process and unfortunately I don’t have much time at the moment.

I will probably never alter my 2001, Indian-made GV-2, as I like the tone I get from it. But this video is awesome, as you go into so much detail about the characteristics of both the GV-1 and GV-2 pedals. You really explain a lot more than others on the 'net seem to do.

The sound probably won't rely on the OP amps or the LED diodes, is the overall design of the circuitry on the resistors as the degrade over time, older resistors with "wide" tolerances produced better tones like the good old pedals Tube Screamers or the MXR Distortion Plus or the DOD Grey, etc, etc, I think this pedal benefits with the bigger LED 3mm I got in red or white super bright red composite, instead of the tiny ones, and a better polarized capacitor like a Nichicon bipolar or "gold" at 50v range, if you like to destroy stuff in order to get the "tone" you want.
