Just found this video as I was preparing to sell my ca. 2000 GV-2 (marked GV-1 on the board). Sadly, it spent the vast majority of it’s life in the box and not on my pedalboard, despite the C22 mod. After watching this, I had to try making the changes to mine, and WOW! What a difference. I have a few MIAB pedals here, and I’ve spent the day determining that the modded GV-2 ‘stomps’ them all. I just finished this mod yesterday and the pedal sounds amazing. With the Deep control, I feel like I have an improved version of an original “The Guv’nor’. Regarding the board, yes, you have to control the temperature of your iron and be gentle when desoldering parts, but this one is actually one of "the best" in terms of PCB quality ... you should see the tubescreamers ...

If they hadn’t bent every resistor and capacitor wire over to hold it in place prior to soldering, it would have been a lot easier. I also wish I had a magnifying glass with an arm to help me see those tiny parts. But, since I don’t intend to be needing one in the future, I couldn’t justify the cost for one pedal mod. But, if you keep posting such useful mods I will have to buy one. Cheers mate!

@@joesimonaudio6738 hey! I also just finished doing the mods. I don’t know if you monitor this video anymore, but a couple of questions. I added the two diodes AFTER the existing diode D1. I lifted one leg of D1 (the negative side) and soldered the two diodes in the same direction, Nd then back into the lifted leg hole. Was that correct? Also, I LOVE the sound. I had one already that I liked, and bought a used one to mod. Compared the two before any mods (and there was no mods to either pedal at this point) and the used one I bought was even slightly more dark, bassy than my original one. I thought that was weird, I moved the used, darker one, love the sound, but I get the impression that the output volume is lower now. Not a problem, but when I now compare the modded pedal to the original, the original is clearly on bassy, and the modded much better, but the overall volume is lower in the modded one, at similar settings, and also at settings where I match the tone. It just means I have to bump the volume more on the modded on, but is this expected or does it have to do with how I inserted the two diodes in the circuit?

Applied this mod to my old pedal today (GV-2 revision printed on the board). I never liked its mushy and dull distortion with howling lows, shrieky mids and almost absent highs, so it spent the last ten years gathering dust in the closet with me thinking occasionally of either selling it (for peanuts, probably, so not really worth the effort) or throwing it into the garbage bin. Haha, now I'm so glad that I resisted the spontaneous itching to just get rid of it through all these years! It definitely sounds much, much better, a lot clearer and crunchier. Muddiness is completely gone, trebles are singing, bass is tight and roaring at higher levels of gain. I'm playing a Strat with Fender CS 69 pickups into a 4 Watt Vox AC4 head with a 12'' cabinet and set the Guv'nor as follows (values ranging from 0 to 10 for ease of understanding): Deep 0, Bass 4, Mid/Treble 10, Gain 4-8. Amp volume is set half-way, so that the tone is only slightly breaking, when the pedal is switched off, and stepping on the Guv'nor footswitch turns my nice little amp into a freaking BEAR!! I'm completely blown away, that the change in tone is so substantial! Also, a piece of advice for those, who are thinking of making this mod: stick to 0.125 Watt resistors! The shop that I went to had only 0.25 Watt 10 kOhm resistors, and fitting those two (R12 and, especially, R19, which is located right under a sheaf of wires) was ugly as hell. Thankfully, I managed to get other resistors in 0.125 size, so I did not have any issues with the rest of the changes :)

I was almost willing to spend a crazy amount of money on a boutique pedal because I wasn't satisfied with my drive pedals when I saw your video. After being able to get a GV-2 for not more than 30€ (shipped) and sourcing the parts I was able to get an amazing pedal for not much money at all. I haven't added the additional diodes to the power rails yet but I'm already stunned with the result. Again, thank you so very much!

@@error8418 : For circuit simulations I mostly use LT Spice (which is free and works great even though its GUI is not best). I also use Python scripts to simulate a lot of components and/or blocks, as well as for data analysis, comparison and modelling. For actual measurements I usually rely on my own Python scripts paired with an audio interface. Any decent modern USB interface is going to provide you great results. I often use a Scarlett 2i2, which is cheap and reliable, and with the proper techniques you'll get great quality measurements. That said, if you can afford it, go for an RME, they're simply the best hands down. If you want a software that does it all for you (way less educational) check out Electroacoustics Toolbox from Faber Acoustical (they have a free demo version).

@@joesimonaudio6738 Thank you very much. Yeah, RME interfaces are purely amazing. I was able to upgrade to a second hand Babyface Pro last year and the converters really are extremely clean sounding. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any line outputs except the main ones which are intended for speakers, but I will eventually get an ADAT extension. Nice to know that Spice still gets used and is a helpful tool. I will definitely check out the other software you mentioned. Cheers!

I've had a mark 2 for over 10 years and have barely used it as I built a distortion. With the mods it not only sounds great but it's really versatile and by experimenting with, say, a lead tone, I find that the same tone is a little tweak away from a rhythm tone that I wouldn't have considered. Thank you so much! I just got a cheap Guvnor 2 plus from eBay. Opening the case shows the older board with markings on the bottom side. The pots are somewhat sketchy, too. Ergo: first model of the GV-2. After modding and fiddling around with different types/values for C12 I settled for 2x10nf ceramic disc in parallel, which sounded somewhat tighter than all the other options I tried. Cool mod!

Not sure where you live joe, but there is a steady supply of Guv 2s on reverb for between $60 to $80. Perhaps you could buy, mod and resell on reverb. And maybe look into doing the same sort of thing with bluesbreaker pedals. Just a thought for u.

The sound probably won't rely on the OP amps or the LED diodes, is the overall design of the circuitry on the resistors as the degrade over time, older resistors with "wide" tolerances produced better tones like the good old pedals Tube Screamers or the MXR Distortion Plus or the DOD Grey, etc, etc, I think this pedal benefits with the bigger LED 3mm I got in red or white super bright red composite, instead of the tiny ones, and a better polarized capacitor like a Nichicon bipolar or "gold" at 50v range, if you like to destroy stuff in order to get the "tone" you want.

livingabovethe12th very good question. Part of the reason why the nodded mk2 has more “knack” than the mk1 is due to the opamp, which has simply better specs. Things like slew rate can make a big difference in the clarity you get, (improving the transient response). So, a good Burr-Brown, having good specs is probably going to result in the same effect :-)

Mk 2 is sounding amazing with the volume on 10, but I am lowering my amp as much as possible. What do you think the cranked volume does to the pedal? Do you think it`s just pushing my amp (amp gain is on 0) or does it really change the tone of the pedal itself? Also, does with affect compression and drive of the pedal itself? Would the mod give it the cranked volume sound without having to crank it?

I haven’t tried it but I wouldn’t expect it to sound better. If you want to improve it with a smoother distortion, you should look into replacing the opamp with another that has a lower “slew rate” value.

Love the mods. I did want to verify two things. I lifted one leg of the diode D1, soldered he two added diodes in the correct (same) orientation and then back into the hole/pad where I had taken D1 out of. Hat is correct? Also, I do notice the volume range is lower on the modded pedal. It’s no big deal, I can make it up by cranking volume up, but for similar settings the unmodded pedal has more output. Is this expected?

You know what, in my eagerness, I forgot two of the mods, because they went replacements, I forgot to remove one resistor and forgot replace another with a wire, which I now have done, even BETTER sounding! So happy with this, I think it might have helped also with volume. That it is closer to the range it had. So my bad. I’d recommend these mods to anyone. What a thorough job he did here, and also love the explanations for the design issues of this pedal as it comes from Marshall. Have no idea why Marshall didn’t think of these things. But very glad I found this! On to mod pedal #2 !

Hi Steven. I'm glad you liked it! Yes, both v2 revisions are modded the same way. Regarding the D1 part: you don't have to remove it, you have to lift one of its legs and add two more in series (not in parallel / back to back).

Your V2.1 photo of the circuit board shows a wire across D1 instead of a rectifier diode. Why is this? Also, would you be willing to post a photo of the two 1N4007 rectifier diodes wired in series with the original? I would like to se how you arranged and soldered them. Thanks! Harley

Harley Grahn I see you paid attention to the details :-) it’s because at the time of the picture I was still performing some measurements and I needed the diode out of the way. The final arrangement is a “pi” shape, with the three diodes soldered together first and then inserted in the PCB in the place of the original diode.

Harley Grahn Happy to answer :-) I would recommend following the same standard I always have: stay away from electrolitics and tantalum unless there’s no other way, don’t use ceramics since the risk of microphonics is too high, and other than that, anything will probably be good. Some surface mount caps can also be unexpectedly troublesome, reacting too much to mechanical input, but that’s not something we find often in devices that are popular to mod.

Joe Simon Audio The schematic shows the capacitors at 47 pF at 50V and the 22 nf at 63V. How do you feel about Polyester Film or Silver Mica for the cap replacements? I can only find Polyester Film or Metallic Film in the 22 nf 63Vs. I found 47 pF 50Vs in Silver Mica. Any suggestions on where to buy the replacement caps if you suggest better alternatives would be appreciated too. I hate to be a bother, but have been searching the web and the previous mentioned caps are what I have found. Thanks again.

Harley Grahn In my opinion and personal experience polyester and mica / silver mica capacitors will be a perfect replacement. They’re very stable chemically and mechanically and the tolerances are good or very good in most cases. Only “problem” is the price sometimes ;-)

Doesn’t matter, just make sure the two you add are in the same “direction” as the existing one (so current can flow through).

@@Sid-np3hf the purpose of adding the two extra diodes is reducing the supply voltage for the opamps. This is done to compensate for the increased dynamic range that the newer opamps in the MkII have compared to the old MkI. So if you don’t add the diodes, it will have a slightly wider dynamic range (and also a little bit more volume). The changes won’t be dramatic but they are there.

1/8 Watt will suffice. Anything above that will work fine as well but the larger the resistor, the tighter it gets to mount them, since the space is limited.

​@@monkeymonkerson Can't find 47pF ceramic caps? Should be among the most common. Any value close to 47pF will work as well with minimal differences. Just for your information, C22 is the most critical of the two 47pF capacitors. When it's 47pF, C22 sets a low-pass filter cut frequency at ~15 kHz. If you take the also very-common standard value of 68pF that frequency shifts to ~10kHz, and if you take 33pF it will instead be ~22kHz. Although the distortion will have the same character, there's a small difference in the high-end response, although in many cases it won't be noticeable.

Straight ToTheBar yes, you can skip the “deep” block that way, but FYI the output impedance will be much higher (it won’t drive long lengths of cable as well) and the output level will be a lower (although probably okay if you didn’t rely much on a specially high output initially). Why not mod it, though? It’s only a few components and that way it will be bypassed when you turn the “deep” control to zero.

personally, i think t'his is not "a great sounding pedal", my PAL800, my revival drive hot rod, sound way better than this, i don't understand the hype around these things, it's a box with resistors, capacitors pots and a switch and with poor quality compared to those these day's, there is not even a "secret component in it, i would never buy this pedal
