The Horsehead Nebula in the constellation Orion is part of a large, dark, molecular cloud. The red glow is caused by its dominant hydrogen, ionized by the nearby bright star Dogma Orionis. The Black Head owes its blackness mainly to a thick layer of dust. A strong magnetic field sets the direction for the flow of gas leaving the nebula. The bright spots at the base of the Horsehead are young stars still in the formative stage. Light from the Horsehead Nebula takes about 1,500 years to reach us.
