Trailer of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission.
In 2028, ESA will launch its most ambitious exploration mission to search for past and present signs of life on Mars.
Enjoy the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission in minute detail - everything down to the colour and size of the wires, sticky tape and scratches. The spacecraft, the rover and martian landscapes are as true to reality as possible for a simulation. The visuals show the spacecraft structural engineering with a faithful robotic appearance. The martian landscape has been simulated with meticulous realism.
The story begins with the rover exploring the surface of the Red Planet. There is science to be done. Join the adventure.
This trailer provides a first taste for the most accurate animation series made so far of a Mars mission.
ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover has unique scientific potential to search for evidence of past life on Mars thanks to its drill and scientific instruments. It will be the first rover to reach a depth of up to two metres deep below the surface, acquiring samples that have been protected from surface radiation and extreme temperatures. The drill will retrieve soils from ancient parts of Mars and analyse them in situ with its onboard laboratory.
The mission will also serve to demonstrate key technologies that Europe needs to master for future planetary exploration missions. This includes the capability to land safely on a planet, to move autonomously on the surface, and to perform drilling and sample processing and analysis automatically. The rover will use novel driving techniques including wheel-walking to overcome difficult terrains, as well as autonomous navigation software.

Is there more info on the landing system? (Which I assume will now be made by ESA)
@ptonpc
@ptonpc 5 ай бұрын
I can't find much on the landing sysem, it is to be a much simpler version of what was planned in order for it to be ready in time. Looks like it is going to be built in Europe and will take about 3 to 4 years to design and build. The lander itself is intended to be simpler, with no scientific instruments of its own.

Exiting! 😀 No RTG to power the rover? How will you keep the solar cells from accumulating dust?
@hamzahkhan8952
@hamzahkhan8952 5 ай бұрын
You can shake the panels to help get rid of some dust, but in the end you can't do much about it. It would take many years for enough dust to accumulate on the panels for them to stop generating sufficient power for the rover. RTGs are more complex and a lot more expensive. this rover has already had a tough time, so there's no way it would get enough funding for a RTG.
@kspencerian
@kspencerian 5 ай бұрын
No spacecraft is designed to last forever. If you add some kind of mechanism to clean the solar panels, you must trade off scientific instruments because any spacecraft can weigh only so much. Mars spacecraft don't land to clean themselves. And RTGs are very, very hard to get and are heavier. That cleaning system would also add complexity that could damage the cells and end the mission prematurely. Like NASA's InSight lander and the MER rovers, both solar powered, missions have a pre-set duration based on expected wear and tear. Any time afterward is a bonus.

what are you expecting these signs of life would look like? (i.e. fossilized microbes) and who is the rover named after?

Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work helped the understanding of DNA, RNA, coal and viruses. It will look for organic compounds in the samples it has drilled from 2 metres below the surface. It also has cameras and other instruments.

Ni me fiaba en el lander ruso ni ahora la nasa que en mas de una vez nos ha dejado tirado. Que manía tiene la Esa de depender de otros como es el caso del cohete vega y su tecnología ucraniana y rusa. No aprendemos. Y no hablemos de los costes que se han disparado en un 100%. @@jorge9312 no we would not, a lot of missions would not have been a success without international cooperation, due to ESA not getting a lot of budget for their incredible objectives, and yes cooperating with someone as unstable as Russia might be dangerous but if it had paid off it would have been way easier
