Larger lure is preferred. Cephalopods are known to take lures or baits equal or slightly larger than their body length.

One thing didn't learn is how to turn a fish, but I give him credit for hooking fish and getting some exercise chasing after them.

Gold! In honesty, I did get him out, good bow too
@jamesgoetz46252 ай бұрын
@AdriftFishing Back in the late 80's and 90's I learned to steelhead here in Michigan with noodles rods and 4lb test maxima. And so it was important to learn how to turn big fish or you would lose them. I don't fish that way anymore so the fish don't die, but I still use that experience with light tackle in keeping the fish off balance. My rod angle never stops moving and rarely do I pull hooks although it can happen. There's a really good book on spey fishing with traditional tapers, and wish I could think of the author, where he talks about all the ways to turn fish. I think his first name was Max and I'd find it but I just moved and it's in storage.
@AdriftFishing2 ай бұрын
@ good advice man, I’m on 6lb and 5# there but yeah your right the right technique can make all the difference in turning fish. I do the same with 30kg kingfish here “yellowtail” in the states. When on structure I pull them towards the structure to make them run away from it 😂
@jamesgoetz46252 ай бұрын
@@AdriftFishing About 13 years ago I fished the Situk in Yakutat Alaska and there was so much structure in some pools that I had to keep the fish in about 40yds of river. One technique is called walking the dog. I would take off virtually all the pressure off the fish and slowly walk the fish up river before putting the screws to the fish. It's a lot easier to do with a centerpin than a fly reel because my pinky finger was the drag. And so I could feel what the fish was going to do through the rod and the tension of my finger against the reel. The only fish I couldn't control were the monster steelhead that I guesstimated we're over 25 lb and they would go straight upstream and never stop😂
@AdriftFishing2 ай бұрын
@ lol, walk the dog! We use that term too when pulling fish off structure. If you strike and keep the rod high and don’t change the pressure you can motor the boat away and during the confusion they would just come with for a while. Interesting strategy in rivers. Just follow them up stream. I’ll have to try that next time
