Dreamcast needs a box to sell software but MS has Windows installed on over a billion Windows Machines to sell software. There’s a big difference where MS could just release Xbox OS and essentially be installed on a lot of PC’s. Their biggest worry should be losing sales to Valve if they release their own box under your tv.

It's all about branding. The games you named all either had exclusivity or marketing that appeared exclusive to playstation. Playstation likes to brand third-party as if it's first party. Game sales are important but driving people to your store front is more important. That's where they make the bulk of their revenue. As far as sharing with the other platforms. I do think more kid friendly games will go to switch. I think its clear playstation is trying to get younger while appeasing the older base. Sega is partially why Sony Playstation exists. Sony tried to make a Genesis PlayStation after they originally pitched w/ Nintendo and they shut them down. They both could have been the Playstation brand. Mistakes were made.

The conversation around xbox and PS is why I will always maintain that these game companies will be fine but the community around gaming is cooked! Lets examine this from logic standpoint since it seems logic to be where this community has lost the plot. We'll start with Sony since they are the market leader....Sony PS just celebrated the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand and if you were to examine the list of all time favorite PS games from that 30 year period, I can guarantee that most of that list is NOT PS first party games. Sure there will be some first party but no one's all time list of games from PS1 til PS5 consist of all Sony first party game.....yet if you ask anyone from this community Sony is regarded as premium for thier first party games only. This is why i argue that this community has lost the plot, because if every generation that has produced people's favoriite games is a mix of first, second and third party games the one commonality across most every PS fans list is not first party....its exclusives...and to be specific EXCLUSIVES that people want to play! That's what sells PS consoles...people don't care that Naughty Dog made The Last of Us and Naughty Dog is a first party PS studio they care that if the want to play the next The Last of Us game, they need a PS to do it. And you can say that people can wait to get it on PC so its not truly exclusive, and that's where the online fandom loses logic in exchange for platform loyalty, because consumer logic dictates that fans of anything... generally can't wait to get the thing they are a fan of. As an example... you will never hear a Marvel fan say, "I am a really big fan of Fantastic Four, but I am gonna wait 15 + months to see the movie that I am super excited for now" (that is the shortest length of time between the console release and PC release for any first party single player game, 15 months, Spiderman 2). Thats what i mean by online logic....the idea that you are excited about something but you can wait for it beyond the time it takes to make the game. And so one faulty piece of logic needs another to support it which is the speculation that PS is gonna reduce the time between PS release and PC because they need the money to make up for large game budgets. And again I defer to logic here....lets start with game budgets. Can we acknowledge that Spiderman is one of the biggest marketable IP in the world? In 2020 Marvel did a study of thier most recognized character's and guess who is at the top of the list for most recognized....and so, do you really think that every Sony studio is getting Spiderman budget? We toss 300 million and numbers higher than 300 million around when describing game budgets like everyone out here getting the same budget as the most marketable character in Marvel's entire roster. You cannot possibly think that if you are using any sort of financial logic because TLOU2 Sony's flagship in house created IP only cost 240 million dollars according to the leaked documents from the AbK trial, and Horizon Forbidden West, Sony's latest new IP only cost 200 million. I say only because we know from Sony sales records TLOU2 sold 4.3 million units in its first 3 days....doing some quick math 4.3 multiplied by the minimum 60.00 cost of a new game in 2020...yeah Sony made the entire budget of TLOU2 plus a little extra in 3 days from releasing exclusively on thier console, nevermind the fact that the game went on to later win Game of the Year that year and is estimated to have over 12 million units sold to date. Even if you lower the price from 60.00 to account for sales, even at 19.99 which is considered to be bargin bin for games in 2025.... that remaining 8 million units in sales is 160 million dollars....and none of this factors the launch day 129.99 special edition, (which sold out), the deluxe editions, the remaster sales, the 10 dollar No Return DLC for those people who just upgraded to the PS5 version and the fact that the TV show caused a spike in sales.....and the game won't be on PC until April. So logic would dictate....they've more than made thier money from sales on the PS platform. Hell the astronomical 300 million dollar budget of Spiderman 2 is never counted against the over 11 million units sold the game did in its first 3 months of launch at a minimum of 70.00 and does not include the 90.00 deluxe edition or the 140.00 19 inches of Venom edition which sold out. Again doing some quick math shows that they more than made thier money back from just selling ganes on thier own platform. But let this community tell it...and Sony is losing money on exclusives and needs PC to increase profit margin....never mind that there is a cost to making the PC version (they gotta PAY Nixxes) how much so you really think Sony is making on PC versions of thier games after they give Steam thier cut when the most sold PS game on PC is 2 million units. Yeah that online community logic does math like basic math skills. Finally on my last point about Sony, we address the part that no one in this community talks about...PS as a marketplace. This is where logic has left the chat entirely for the online community...i've seen people saying that MS games on PS are a trojan horse thats gonna lead to MS taking over Sony from the inside....I've seen people argue that because MS did it Sony is gonna do it too because they need to keep pace with MS as a publisher.... to now PS gamers are funding xbox gamers gamepass subscription....just every manner of nonsensical rubberish that can be mustered. Whats crazy is that people seem to be aware that it cost Sony money to bring games to the market, but no one accounts for the fact that the 70 million PS5 userbase and thre 50 million PS4 user base if they aren't just buying first party games then that means that every non Sony published game that sells in the PS Store (remember over 65% of the market is now digital) Sony makes 30% off those games. So the thing that makes PS the market leader is not actually game sales...the thing that makes Sony the market leader is having a large population of gamers who own PS consoles as a way to access the PS Store so that they can buy not only PS 1st 2nd and 3rd party games...but everything else as well....including VR. The PS Store is the second largest video game distributor in the world behind Steam....thats why 70 millions consoles matter....yes it helps to sell Astrobot....but when Sony's PS5 and PS4 Stores have more than 120 million users buying games from the marketplace Sony, like Steam, is making 30% for simply hosting a platform for consumers to buy the games they want. Thats the business...thats where they make up all the money that the online community will claim they lost on Concord or the 10 live service games they canceled....or the studios they closed....whatever amount you think they lost from all those talking points...are a drop in the bucket to how much Sony brings in from simply selling games. This is why MS is where they are by the way....i could talk about how MS didn't have games at launch or if it wasn't for the 80 billion dollars in debt they acquired from buying AbK and Bethesda they wouldn't have compelling software, or the fact that MS admitted in court that Gamepass was eroding their sales...the simple logical truth is that MS Xbox struggles as a platform because they lack enough people on thier platform willing to buy games. Not that they don't have any people...there are simply not enough on that platform who do buy games...and not just talking MS first party games...i mean all games. When you get to the place where developers see your platform.... your marketplace as non viable for sales thats when the platform is done. If MS is gonna stay in the console business then they need a strategy to either get more people to buy xbox so that they can then access the MS xbox live store to buy thier games...or they have to find potential customers in other marketplaces. The problem is that from a console perspective...people don't find what MS is selling compelling. And so they transitioned thier published IP from thier storefront where they lack enough people who buy games to the second largest distributor of video games in the world. And before people gamepass makes money....do yourself a favor and look at every game in gamepass not owned by MS and realize that every month those games stay in the service...they are an ongoing licensing expense.

Video game subscription services will eventually not work. Netflix content can be watched in 2-4 hoirs a day and can watch 30 different things in a month easily. Youd be lucky to fully play 1-3 games in a month.

To be fair, the video game landscape is quite different to what it was in the early 2000s. The largest difference is the dominance of the live service game and the revenue that can generate, not just for the publisher but the platform holders. Unfortunately, Sega didn't have that revenue stream available to them during the Dreamcast generation.

My cousin linked his account to mine so he pays Gamepass and both can e enjoy it. However... Still, some times, he gets crazy and pays me a Game I play a lot. Like.. He buyed me GTA V digital for 5€. I been on xbox since 02 and only ps for exclusive. Next gen I'll have a ps6 and keep my Series x and my library and that it. Its pretty simple. And gamepass obviously isnt enough because they are doing what they are doing

Xbox not having consoles isn’t happening anytime soon. By the time they cut the console, many people will be playing through cloud only. It’s a moot point IMO. I foresee Microsoft making Xbox’s but also licensing out their updated OS to third party hardware manufacturers. Why not? That’s what Microsoft does with Windows and that’s how Steam works. The new Xbox is moving closer to Steam and away from PlayStation. They could even make a deal to bring Steam games to the next Xbox and visa versa. I expect Steam to make a console per the success of the Steamdeck.

They are in a good position due to being the product of choice by default. People are tired of Apple and Nike for many reasons but consumers will still get them. So much could be considered as to why but I wouldn’t count Xbox out yet. Time will tell.

I'm with you, this is interesting for Greg to see and for SB Mike to feel as ruffled as he does. The idea of Microsoft/Xbox being one of the biggest publishers and having a console and a service (Gamepass) is so freaking huge. Did I ever expect Mattel Electronics selling M network games on the 2600 to be a bad thing for Intellivision (way back in 84)? The console market seems to be hitting a much needed fork where the industry needs to come up with better ways to not leave a bunch of money on the table. Xbox laying it all out says to me they want to keep the lights on, which Mattel didn't in the Intellivisions case. Xbox and Gamepass get me pretty excited about gaming. Playstation does not. I'm not saying one is a better company, just that out of the two I never worry about going back to Sony. An ecosystem like theirs is why people dogmatically buy their next console without hesitation because they have exclusive fever. Do I want to play PS games on my Xbox? Sure. But with Gamepass I am not starving the way PS5 players are right now. Greg Miller (and Collin M) got me excited to get a Vita back in 2013, just to see it die a few years later because Sony doesn't support the stuff they make. I'm glad you spotlights this. You got to see this as icing on a cake that finally raised and has a better taste than expected. As for SBMike, he can either pony-up, get a Switch 2 or join the PC wild west. He has options. I think You might be right. Xbox can’t make enough money on consoles and exclusives, so they grow the profit of being on every platform. On consoles, the platform always made majority of profit from games. Not from the box. So if Xbox will start selling more copies, cause they are everywhere, it will secure them the capital to fund more and more good games. This is where GamePass come in. If they will have enough subscribers, it will become profitable. If it is exclusive to Xbox and PC, with a feature to log into Steam from Xbox, they will have it all. With enough good titles, GamePass will be very alluring. The most important part is the steady flow of income, to fund new expensive games. Budgets of games have become massive. We are closing to a point, where one fail can sunk the publisher. We are already at the point, where it can sunk a studio. Imagine what would happen to Rockstar and 2K, if GTA6 won’t set the world on fire. Cause the profile of gamers needs and preferences changed. It won’t happen, probably. But Ubisoft is sort of at this point already. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has to keep Ubisoft afloat. Or they will be bought out. Surprisingly, Xbox might have found a solution to a problem, that is rising budgets of games, when they tried to find a way, what to do, if You lose the console war. PlayStation was always last, when it comes to innovations and copying new trends was always hit and miss at best. So maybe I’ll buy an Xbox after all.

I play on xbox and pc. I dont mind the strategy microsoft is going with. It makes sense if the goal is to make as much money as possible. The console war back in the day used to be the biggest factor in what system you played on. Back in the Sega/Nintendo era, families would buy one system or the other. The market was smaller, and gamers were younger. Now PCs are more affordable, some people play on mobile, and families have multiple systems. I think it was VGF that said it's the platform wars now. Soon, it will be less about which console you own, but which companies games you play.

In 2024, the CEO of Sony, which is the Parent Company of PlayStation, said the PlayStation 1st Party Games were only having a 6% Profits Margins for those 1st Party PlayStation Games specifically on PlayStation with Horizon being the #1 1st Party PlayStation Game selling 30 million copies. So the Sony CEO said that he wants PlayStation 1st Party Games sold on “Other Platforms” which is meaning Nintendo, PC, Xbox! I believe that Microsoft and Sony have a Partnership Agreement to have Xbox and PlayStation to have each others 1st Party Games sold on each other’s Platforms!! I believe sometime in the near future Sony PlayStation will announce that partnership and PlayStation Games will start selling on Xbox!!!
