these videos often fail to consider investing via pension which generates a guaranteed return of 20/40/45% instantly. Mortgage payments are paid net of tax.

I’ve lived in London since 2010 and finally managed to buy this year. However, for those that are interested here is a list of my rents that I paid ( in shared houses) and in different areas. As you can see I had to move around a lot, particularly when Landlords wanted to increase the rent too much. 2010: Herne Hill - £450pcm inc. bills 2011: East Dulwich - £475 pcm ex bills (£575 inc bills) 2012: Harringay - £480 pcm ex bills (£550 inc bills) 2013 - 2015: Tooting Bec - £480 ex bills (£560 inc bills) 2015 - 2017: Tooting Bec (same house but bigger room) - £550pcm ex bills (£650 inc bills) 2018 - Balham - £700pcm inc bills 2019 - Swiss Cottage- £700pcm inc bills 2020 - Clapham South - £1,300pcm inc bills 2021 - Streatham - £800pcm inc bills 2022- 2023 Bounds Green - £600pcm ex bills (£725 inc bills)

Total n00b question, but why do you lose tax free status to take the funds out of the old provider and depositing with the new one, rather than transferring directly between providers? Surely the gains when you sell in the old are tax free, then there wouldn’t be any tax associated with buying investments in the new ISA? I can see that you would maybe lose (or “double spend”) your tax-free allowance. Is that what you mean? But if you’re nowhere near your annual limit, that shouldn’t be a factor, right?

Great Intro video, but most people of your age are already investing $thousands anyway. They will have a Defined Contribution Pension. They should take a careful look at what their pension scheme is invested in as they may be able to change it to a MUCH better performing (higher equity) scheme. Many pension schemes give you a default investment in poor UK stocks and low gain bonds but most investors agree that for younger people (20-50), investing in 80% to 100% equity is much better. Meanwhile your default pension scheme is paying for all those pension company employee Porsches!

@upthegainsmoney DC pensions contribute at least 8pc of salary. So most people will have thousands of pounds invested already even after 1 year, let alone 10 years or more. So I don't understand your reply?
@nishnosh
@nishnosh 12 күн бұрын
Not sure where you have got at least 8% from. Most Uk DC schemes are not great at all. Some of my friends is 3% er and 3% ee. But if you take the average salary of £36k, assuming 5% er and say 5% ee, that’s 3.6k per year which is likely not enough for most people in retirement. I agree with you on choosing a low cost index le the S&P. Fees are less, growth is better…absolute no brainer (for people under 50). Shame not enough people know about this and some employer pension structures are too rigid to offer a level of choice. Fact is not enough people contribute enough (due to low salaries) AND their money is not in the optimal investment for them…real shame.

@@nishnoshYep. A lot of people are already investing but they don't realise it. I was going on typ. workplace pension of 5pc employee and 3pc employer but whatever the pc, it's quite a tidy sum after just a few years.

I know my work based pension was set up for a generic, low risk fund. Have since switched that to the same global index I have for my ISA, but it’s crazy how many people have no idea what their pension is invested in. In fact, most people I speak to didn’t even know their pension was invested in anything and just thought it worked like a savings account. I was late to the game with learning about personal finances at 30, but have opted for the highest contribution towards my pension, so 8% from me and 8.5% from my employer. Pretty shocking that no one really teaches you this stuff unless your parents knew about it or you go seeking it on KZbin.

@Joshkt87
@Joshkt87 15 күн бұрын
Yeh a lot of fluff and no concrete conclusion. But you basically have to do the numbers and work it out for yourself - it depends. Yes you will own a home after 30 years but on the reverse you will have a large investment portfolio. At 30 years you could simply buy in cash for full. Obviously you need bullet proof discipline, investing isn't forced like a mortgage which will mean you lose your home if you fail to paym

Great video, I had a huge debt problem when I was younger, that lasted for years. Credit cards seemed like free money until I got to the point where I was drowning in debt. Like you I realised I couldn’t carry on like that so I focused clearing it as soon as possible, it took a lot of time but I could slowly see it go down month by month. Once I had cleared the debts I focused on making the most use of my pension contributions to get the max tax benefits and only after that did I start to focus on my ISA. I knew I wouldn’t be utilising this invested cash until I was 55 so the pension was the most efficient vehicle. I retired at 56 along with my wife who is a few years younger after a huge amount of saving and investing. One thing I would say is that I’m still risk on being 90% invested in individual stocks and ETFs, although my individual stock focus has shifted to dividends to pay out a steady income as we have no salaries any longer. We have been lucky to retire into a very favourable stock market which I’m well aware could turn at any point. We have enough in cash like instruments to last a few years should it be needed but at the moment things are going really well. If someone has high interest debt, like credit cards, this has to go first as you will never out perform it with investments. Make the most of your pension, especially if you’re a higher or additional rate tax payer and you don’t think you will need the money before 55 or 57 as the age of accessing it is increasing in 2028. Use your ISA allowance but go for stocks and shares and not cash if you can afford to invest. As you say invest regularly and consistently, if you get a bonus or some other windfall invest it rather than spend it. Your future self with thank you later.

So the ACC funds will re-accumulate your dividends helping it grow and compound. Then the DIST or INCOME funds these pay your dividends as cash. Usually when building a pot from the ground up you begin with ACC and then switch to other types later in life with a significant pot.

I too went with HL, still do, and very happy with it. However, I too have wasted my money for years not appreciating what HL is good for, and what it is not. HL is not for trading, and especially foreign stocks. What it is imho is a good investment platform for investing regular sums into funds and etfs, which you intend to hold for a long period of time. The buying of etfs in particular can be lowered to £1.50 per trade if automatically set each month, and etfs avoid the 0.45% HL fee that you will pay if invested in regular funds. My biggest complaint about HL is what I consider a rather opaque fee structure that uses low values to show you your fees, which I believe helps hide the costs to its customers.
