The average take-home pay of £2,300 to £2,500 is shockingly low for London.

When I was first renting it cost 450/month for a huge top floor room in a 3 bedroom house in brixton back in 2013-2015. I saw the same room on the market this year and it's 1400/month...for a room. Absolutely insane.

You need at least £100k a year income now I’d say to enjoy the things in London that make it worth living there and even then you wouldn’t be living a really good life. If you can work remotely then Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh are much better value.
@upthegainsmoneyАй бұрын
Manchester is also getting pretty pricey as Edinburgh is one of the most expensive cities to buy in
@PeacockRhinoАй бұрын
@@upthegainsmoney Edinburgh is expensive but it’s cheaper than London still and much safer, cleaner and easier to get around.

IMO not anymore - I love London for what it gave me but now it's just unaffordable and so different!

@@upthegainsmoneyit’s a really good question. I’m from Brixton London and moved out to Leeds 5yrs ago ( about to buy my second property) and my quality of life has improved significantly and dramatically. It’s a tough one as I do miss London but the freedom and stress-free lifestyle is better. The point is that one needs to have a rich family or salary to afford the basics in London which can be got elsewhere for cheaper.

Last time I was there I was sitting in Wetherspoons one night, and I suddenly noticed there were six CCTV cameras on my side of the room alone. That didn't make me feel safe. It made me feel surveilled. And yeah, everything you said. It's a ££££ madhouse. The other annoyance is all the messaging telling you how to behave, especially on public transport.

If you don’t earn enough, of course it’s crap! If you do earn enough, most of these complaints are moot, and those that aren’t are largely nationwide issues.

Most people don't earn enough to live comfortably there. Same in cities like Sydney, San Francisco, etc.

I'm still here, I don't mind it though because I live in a Housing Association property and so the rent is only around £600 a week. I've lived here pretty much 95% of my life, I can't say I love it but I don't hate it either. I don't find the cost of living much of an issue as I don't eat or drink out as I'm pretty introverted and much prefer making my own meals. I don't use public transport as I don't enjoy being squashed in the bus or even more so on the underground. I much prefer leaving home earlier and having a good brisk walk to anywhere that is within 1 hours walking distance.

@@upthegainsmoney I also love all the history and architecture here since I was a kid and still sometimes visit the National Gallery and British Museum and other places, which are all completely free. Certainly alot has changed and not much of it for the better, but I don't find many other places i've visited over the years in the UK much more agreeable and I guess familiarity plays a bit part in me staying here. Where I live is very convenient because many different supermarkets are nearby, hospitals, shopping centres etc. The people populating the area are of course very different and largely don't speak English as a first language, this means there is no longer that feeling of community that was present as a kid, therefore I just keep to myself and do my own thing. Still i'm able to make it work for me at the moment, I've come through alot of tough situations over the past decade and i'm hoping that I can continue to improve my situation.

@@gatekeeperboxing5898 I’m glad you’ve had help and I don’t have a personal objection to it. It’s just a moral objection that we have a system that taxes people of very modest means to provide others a lifestyle that those that are being taxed can’t afford to provide for themselves
