👍 Very nice story, thank you for sharing. Glad you able to find a knife similar to one that clearly meant something to you as a youth. Without passing judgement, I was sad to hear that you are no longer allowed to carry a small utility knife as it prevents you from fully enjoying the functionality of this tool from days gone by. I believe you did a very good job refurbishing this knife and repurposing the ammo magazine pouch as a sheath was an excellent idea.
@dongkhamet13512 күн бұрын
I am not familiar with the knife in question but given what you have said about the marque and its history I would hazard a Naval connection. The secondary tool would serve as a marlin spike for untying knots or splicing and a punch-awl for sail repairs etc. The main blade looks like it might have initially had a straight edge and a profile that tapered out from the tang towards the point. Ergo a Rope Knife (,or Ramsfoot if you will ;)

I like to give a shout out to ebay UK for handling knives and bladed antiques with all the thoughtfulness and understanding as a daily mail reading , pearl clutching granny. Thanks for linking to “knives found on a person while on the street”crime at the Ugov website. Thank you for misinforming the public and intimidating antique dealers and local craftsmen.

Although I may not have the comprehensive overlook of the OP regarding this matter, I should also wish to express the depth of my gratitude to the eBay team. It was wonderful to discover entirely by coincidence that I am once more entitled to bid, having had such privileges at some point removed for no apparent reason.

Good video 👍🏼👍🏼 The one I bought in 2001 is made from a thicker steel. Just a bit more robust. I bought another one in 2014 and got the Bushman Bowie a year later. Still extremely reliable knives. I like to have a bit of reach when I go into bear country and these blades will do the job when attached as a spear.

I have one of the German army pocketknives and it does not look like because it does not have a hook or beak on the end, but it will open cans if you use it as you would normally use a Swiss Army Knife can opener. Sharpening the bevel on that lower front end (screwdriver) of what you think is only a bottle opener.

Very nice knife and video. I love that straight back full belly blade design. I know that several other people call that shape a “trade knife” and “scalping knife” but what historical evidence do you know to support that descriptive name? Why is this straight back/ full belly design called a scalping knife? Rather than a trailing point blade, bull nose butcher knife blade, or spear point blade shape?
@timbo6613 күн бұрын
Thanks. I have no idea why they`re called scalping or trade knives, didn`t find any clues when I was researching either, sorry.

Looks decent,. even if you did mess up the edge a bit. And it still cuts ok so that's not much of a downside. I think they would definitely have had an axe and or a hatchet / tomahawk. From what I've seen from depictions of hunters etc from that time period, much use was made of pack animals. So there'd be little problem with taking those sort of tools along with them.
@dongkhamet135125 күн бұрын
Perhaps ideally a hatchet and a medium sheath knife, such as this, as well. Then with Nessmuk, the folding pocket slicer was added, and the Trifecta Of Blades was baptized. Nowadays some people switch out the hatchet for a folding saw, which depending on the task will work quicker and more cleanly as well as packing light.
@zednotzee725 күн бұрын
@@dongkhamet1351 Indeed, but I think it all depends on where they were going, and what they wanted to do when they got there. Nessmuk of course was going ultra light, but a fur trapper probably wouldn't, and neither I suspect would hunters. Both of those would definitely have pack horses / mules. But for carrying on there person, your probably not far wrong. 🙂

From what I gather the blade is carried on the left side, edge up, for expedient deployment. If you practice this draw with visualisation it can be appreciated how in this manner the blade can be drawn and swung out (in the manner of defence or attack) with the cutting edge presented, in one movement. Drawing the same blade with the same intention, from an edge down sheathed disposition, will then require a change of direction or compound movement. 'Less efficient and slower this way. Just as in a street fight, the first punch landed usually ends the matter - or in a Wild West gun battle the first gun out - our ancestors learned the importance of the quick draw.

@@timbo66Thanks for the responses. I just started viewing your content today, although I had already heard of you a while back from Scab's channel. 'Loving your work! I also recently started posting my own videos, you might find something on my channel of interest. In particular I invite you to check out my Knife Reviewers' Challenge video. I am looking for someone in the UK to do a test review of one of my home made Stanley USA chisel-steel knives. The reviewer can specify certain features of the knife, which I will make for them to keep in exchange for a coin of the realm (any value) and the commitment to test and critically review the knife. So far I have had one reviewer accept my offer. Captain Electro's 3" Wharncliffe arrived at his home today and I gather he likes it. I have some videos up regarding the making process and his review is presumably incoming. The other reviewers I have contacted with this scheme either declined or haven't gotten back to me yet, so should you decide to accept you will be first in line ;D

A different Technical Tap is to hold the spear with the head pointing down and tap on the butt of the handle.
@dongkhamet135126 күн бұрын
A sturdy way to modify the shape of a handle like this is to use an epoxy-soaked twine wrap. Once it has cured it is basically micarta and can be cut, textured, sanded, polished etc. Today I will be patching a crack in a 7' beechwood billhook pole, using this method. I also have I cudgel of Lilac wood, reinforced in this way, with some videos of same on my channel.

Might I suggest that you try putting a good edge on your copper knife? You may be surprised as I am at how it performs.

Is this like a public garden? In America, everyone is so overprotective over "their land." Even public land has so many restrictions. You aren't allowed to take sticks or stones from some park lands. There are national forests for public camping, but I live hours away. It's a shame because we have more than enough land here, but every entity is so territory. Individuals and governments and corporations.
