Growing up in the North Eastern U.S. in the 60s and 70s, I do not ever recall seeing one. ( they are more common there now) Import into the U.S. were very limited, and nonexistent after 1973. I had a green Match Box 109, and would see them on wildlife adventure shows. About 25 years ago, I remember seeing a 109 parked in a field near my house here in California. The man who owned it was there walking his dog and told me it had come from Australia. It seemed as exotic as any Ferrari or Aston Martin but looked like it could survive the Armageddon. Over the last several years, I got to see a few at various car shows and was amazed at how void of creature comforts they were. In early 2023, while helping a friend show his Jaguar XK120 at a event near Fresno, I struck up a conversation with a cattlerancher who still drove his 1966 S2A 88”, regularly. He had it there at this semiposh event still with manure on the tires. He had used it that morning to pull a dead cow out of is field. 7 months later I phoned the gentleman and suggested he keep my number should he think of selling it. He told me he had just decided 2 days before to sell it. A week later it was mine. It is mostly original except for a few “farmer fixes”, and the original chassis and bulkhead are rust free. In the year I have owned it, it has become very much a beloved family pet and is getting the TLC it deserves. It is so unlike any other “specialty car” on the road, it draws smiles and waves from total strangers everywhere it goes. I have owned and driven many interesting cars in my 65 years, but none have made me smile like this old tatty Land Rover. Their charm is infectious.☺️👌 Cheers.

I rewired mine and added fuses in every line. Fuse boxes are cheap.....and a long time ago (30 years), I took the wiring harness from a scrap Japanese car.....I,m still using some of those wires today for little jobs here and there.
@highdownmartin27 күн бұрын
Landrover electrics aren’t bad. What’s bad is forty years of idiots repairing the loom with twisted wire and tape then expecting it to be a permanent repair. Sensible mods are the way to go. Eg Vaseline inside side lights indicators brake lights etc. wire from sides replaced or properly spliced ( solder and heat shrink) and long enough to run right through to engine bay and you have your bullet connection in the dry there. Steamwally’s lr videos on KZbin are very good and if you’re doing anything mechanical see if he’s done it for you to watch. If you know fcll now, then after a couple of years you should be able to tackle most jobs, as they say Been turning drivers into mechanics since 1948. You’re much better off doing as much as you can yourself for the simple reason, you’ll know your vehicle. You’ll develop a mechanical sympathy and be able to shout to a passenger. CAN YOU HEAR THAT NOISE? IT WASNT DOING THAT YESTERDAY!! But you’ll check it and find something loose or run out of oil or whatever. They’re an acquired taste but if you love em, you’ll enjoy nearly every minute of it. Have fun.

About 15 years ago I had a Series 3 long wheel base {109} van back petrol. I'd had it for 8 years and I reluctantly sold it due to family pressure and I've missed it everyday since. It was the only motor I have ever loved. When it snowed I'd be out on the road double quick! I can no longer afford to buy a decent one as the prices have gone through the roof. Long live the Series Land Rover!!

Here in Canada we shudder at the lack of sound deadening/slash thermal insulation. Having driven my Series IIA at -25C. I speak from experience. Oddly, mine had a tropicial roof. In Canada? Ha! I had to add a second heater in the back. I enjoyed it when I was young but wouldn't put up with it for a long drive now. Its best feature was the PTO winch and the vehicle simpicity for DIY repair. It was old when I got it but surprisingly relaible for an old junker. Land Rovers where never popular here as they were too small on the inside, too uncomfortable, too gutless, too slow, too hard to get parts for, the ride was harsh and the brakes so-so, plus it was too foreign. The space for the driver's feet on the left hand drive model was bad joke. The seat had no fore and aft adjustment and the wipers were hilarious. No other utility or farm vehciles here ever had any thing less than a six cylinder, while Land Rovers had a four. Of course I had to buy one. It came with a small calibre bulltet hole in the passenger door, a cracked road wheel and a defective ignition coil. I did drive it to Belize and back in '81 ( seven thousand miles ) without any problem except a set of points going bad in Mexica. I replaced them with a spare set by the side the road. The Series models were basically high-speed tractors and not suitable for the North American market and vast distances. People think nothing of driving 1,200 kms to go visit somene two provinces over, or more. So, I had my fun but after while it had to go.

Looks like you found a gem! Such beautiful countryside, the perfect backdrop for a country drive in a vintage Landy! What country is this? I bought a 1966 Series 2A 88”, last year from a rancher who was still using it daily. It still had manure on the tires. I’m slowly getting it sorted out. I’ve had several interesting vehicles through the years, but none have made me smile as much. As there are no vintage Land Rover shops within 100 miles of me, I am the mechanic. Lol Cheers.

@@calsurflance5598 Hi, I’m in the UK, specifically Peak District National Park. There is something about land rovers that makes you smile, like being a kid again with a toy truck 😊
@calsurflance559828 күн бұрын
@ Very true! It draws a small crowd anywhere I park it. I’m in Central California and they are very rare here. If you do see an old Land Rover, it’s usually a Defender with a $100,000 restoration. Seeing a tatty old Series car doesn’t intimidate anyone and they have to investigate. I showed it to a friends widow, who immediately said, “I want it”! Then another woman stopped in the middle of the road just to take a picture. I feel very fortunate to have found a mostly original, unrestored ( except for a few farmer repairs) Landy with a rust free chassis and bulkhead. The only rust on the entire vehicle was in the window channels. A bit of welding remedied that. I’m 2 hours west of Yosemite National Park, and my goal is to get the old buggy mechanically safe and reliable to make the trip ( and back). My only advice is to get the workshop manual. They are still available. Best of luck my friend.

I went the route you did....always wanted a Landrover of my own..... EX wife would not allow....got divorced...bought a lovely Petrol engined series 2A...had it set up perfectly by an expert...nice....got 3 months lovely driving before it needed adjustment...It always needed spark plugs cleaning, points adjusting....carb adjusting (new carb)..always something, always something else...So I read and found that the Diesel although a little slower (not much really)...when set up properly by an expert will go for years without anything other than oil and air cleaners.....no constant points and spark plugs...because it does not have such crude things.....what can go wrong?? timing chain can get slack, but with the right oils and changes that can take years and years. Good Glow plugs are the secret to good starting in all weathers....couple of applications and she will start and run immediately...none of this messing around with a choke...
