I just purchased a 2024 lightning flash and I've noticed my charge goes away so fast even after applying the tips you provide. Is there some kind of battery break in period until it lasts a little longer?
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 3 сағат бұрын
Are you looking at the % or the estimated range? When it’s new it may seem like the estimated range goes down pretty quickly. It happened to me too, because I was testing out the launch of the truck a descent amount. Really though range is impacted by 3 main things besides the drive mode and pro power 1) weather and 2) driving habits. (Speed/acceleration) 3) Hwy vs. city Cold weather is harder on batteries. You will lose about 10%. Speed and acceleration is probably the biggest factor. If you are driving on a highway and you keep it under 70 that will help your range. However if you are driving 80 you will impact your range quite a bit. Also if you are driving in town the regen braking along with slower speeds increases efficiency. Hope that helps.

On a side note, you want to avoid plugging in adjacent to another vehicle charging when a bunch of empty stalls are available. Each 2 consecutive stalls share power so you effectively cut your speed in half (you cut the charging speed of that Tesla in half). The cable will reach the Lightning parked faced into the stall but you do have to get very close.

I appreciate the effort and the video. 353 miles/12.25 hours is 28.8 MPH average. You should certainly get over 320 miles. Another comparison to do is do 70 MPH the whole way and see what you get….. Good to know around town you will exceed your range. Finally if you did this, on the recharge to 100% record your kWh into the battery and report your real mi/kWh (miles driven) / (kWh metered at your charger). Fords displayed mi/kWh is not necessarily real. Thanks for posting!
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you noticed the 12.25 hours. Just to clarify though I do work sometimes sitting in my truck for meetings and such. So the 28.8mph won’t be the right average. It will be closer to probably 50mph because at least 4 of those hours were the truck being on with me using it as a mobile office. Also I like your 70mph test idea. I might do that as well as an only in town one, since this one was a mixture, and the kWh used would be a great thing to add. Thanks.

It is a little different for sure. I guess I’ve just gotten used to it. Give it a shot, and if it doesn’t work for you then switch back. It also depends on terrain. If you live in flatland you might be better sticking with normal, but because range is also impacted by driving style it worth it to test it. Either way turn off pro power onboard when you are not using it and that should save you a little bit too.

That’s good information thank you. I wonder if it has more to do with the elevation change that I experience a difference between the modes? The way I was doing the test was looking at the mi/kwh measurements for the trip. I didn’t measure the kWh that I used, which is a good idea.
@darinbrazil5496

You should calibrate your battery because 2.8 should be 366 miles (131kwh battery). If you cycle your battery a couple times 100 to 0 back to 100 back to 0 and then back to 100. This will recalibrate your BMS to calculate properly.

My lifetime average over 20000 miles is 2.7 miles per kilowatt hour this is driving the truck as a contractor with a lumber rack, load at times, towing a dump trailer to the job sites and to the dump. I frequently get 2.9 to 3.1 for an entire 100% use of the battery which equates 380 to 405 miles per 100% charge. this is mix use highway and city. I drive in normal mode with one pedal drive turned off and AC on when needed. The lightning out performs my previous 1/2 ton gas truck when it comes to miles to a full tank.

@@F150LightningMike I live in a flat area in California, about 10 percent of my total miles is mountain driving up to Lake Tahoe. I find Normal mode the best, I did try sport mode as you recommended and your recommendation lead to me not using one pedal drive anymore. I did further research after your suggestion and found that the Lightning is not an efficient regen system so its better to use the energy to extend your coasting and only brake when needed to actually stop the vehicle and since the lightning uses regen first when you hit the brake pedal you actually are using regen to stop even though you are using the brake pedal and only in an emergency brake situation are you actually using the friction brakes.

@F150LightningMike 24 hours to charge? So if I ran down to zero on a trip I'd be spending the night somewhere while waiting to charge. Or....I could fill my car up at a gas station in 5 minutes and be on my way! Too many negatives, right now, for all electric. Maybe hybrid. I think hydrogen would be best, if it can be perfected.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 9 күн бұрын
Yeah, I’m not too sure about hydrogen either. Reminds me too much of the Hindenburg. :-( The time to charge, though it has not been a big deal to me at home because like I said, it just charges up as much as I need overnight. But when I’m on a trip, they have faster chargers several of them have been installed that gas stations. I’ve also been able to use Tesla chargers And will take about 30 to 45 minutes. So I schedule locations on trips near food so I can eat while waiting. But to your point for trips, it might be easier right now to do gas or hybrid. My wife actually has a Toyota hybrid van that she really likes. That being said I have used my truck on an over 4000 mile road trip last summer and it did great. You can look at some of those videos. At the time I needed to charge I was ready to stop and get out and get something to eat. Stretch my legs and when I was done with what I needed to do it was done charging so it wasn’t that big of a deal.

They watch Fox News and it's affiliates and such misinformation media, and have never actually been in an EV. Once you try an EV you never go back. Same thing happened a little over a century ago. People were terrified of those dangerous horseless contraptions that were taking over and there was nowhere to get that dangerous, explosive kerosene leftover they called gasoline other than in hardware stores or pharmacies. Yet people today talk about range enxiety. In those days, an automobile got no more than 10 to 20 miles of range, and there was nowhere to refuel it.

Awesome test Mike... I also get way more than the 285 mile range I am supposed to get (platinum gets a little less). The killer for range is air resistance. So the faster you drive, the less range you get. All these people(reviewers) that complain that the range is off are driving 80 mph of highways for 300 miles straight. I never go on the highway (all city driving). That is why I also get well above the range estimates. I think they base it on some city driving and some highway driving and give it a combined range.

We've also decreased our range by at least 20% by going 85mph on a rainy day. I'm with you, I don't even understand why people sit in line at fuel stations just to live their normal life. Take my lightning up north this week to New Hampshire white mountains. Got the A2Z pro to charge at a super Tesla charging station. Will let you know how is goes. Think this is a great truck. Been getting lots of updates.

I very much enjoyed seeing this, seeing as I plan on getting a Lightning myself at the end of the month. Thanks!

Thanks. It was a little stressful at the end, but it helped me gain some confidence that I don’t have to worry about it getting low.

Yeah I was impressed with the results too. I would imagine if I was just doing highway at 70mph the whole time it would have been less, but unless you’re on a trip that’s not the best test compared to how I use it everyday.

This is the review I needed to see. Looking at getting a truck in the near future. Used F150 versus used F150 Lightnings in my area are within comparison range. My electricity cost would be similar to yours. Great job on the review.

Is there a coasting mode? No regen?
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 12 күн бұрын
Normal mode is the closest to what you’re talking about because the regen is barely noticeable, and when you apply the brake, even though it’s using regen, it feels like it’s using the brake.

@F150LightningMike I ask because I have a Hyundai Ioniq 5. Love this car, paddle shifters for regen (four levels 0 -3) plus eco, normal and sport. Adding a Flash to my little fleet of work trucks. The heat pump is a very important addition in the 24's for my climate.

Looks like the Hyundai has more options. Yeah this truck just has the Normal as the closest to what you are looking for. There are 4 modes in total. Some of which you can use 1 pedal drive with. 1) Normal (with and without 1 pedal drive) 2) Sport (with and without 1 pedal drive) 3) Tow/haul - (I haven’t tried this yet so I don’t know if 1 pedal drive is available in this mode) 4) Off road

@F150LightningMike my ioniq 5 has I pedal as well, and I have never used it so I forgot the mention that. Really looking forward to the Flash and thanks for your videos.

I think you are going to like the Flash. I’ve heard a lot of great things about that trim. My favorite is the Lariat, but the Flash is still really good.
