What's also so interesting about the early era of cars, was that until Ford made the T and A and dropped the construction cost through the floor, people thought gas cars wouldn't take for the same excuses they levvy at electrics currently- too complex, can't be made at cost/scale well, ect- and even Ford would chat with edison about how a better battery was always around the corner to usurp liquid fuels. It wasn't until 1915-1920s that Edison's Nickel-iron batteries were proven to not be the winner he had promised, but until then their view of the future was every american would have an acre to farm corn for ethanol production which would be the basis for their "energy economy". And even if they had that battery, those stepped voltage drives for DC motors would have kept those primitive EVs from going faster than likely, 40-50mph anyway. As we see here, only until the 60s do you even have the power electronics for the CHANCE at a inverter based drive, which is far more reliable, efficient and safer- stepped volt drivers are basically just switches activating battery banks, and you could have bad switches WELD themselves closed causing a runaway event. The absolute earliest you could have had a competitive EV product was basically with NiMH cells and computer control in the 1980s.

In Los Angeles there’s practically an underground market for old mini pickups among gardeners and contractors. When I had one I would frequently find a note on my windshield with a phone number of someone who wanted to buy it. I eventually sold it to a General Contractor that I was using at the time.

I loved my '86 Mazda B2000. Back then the 2.0 only had about 80 HP and it could hit 100 although I didn't really do that but, a few times. I can imagine how much quicker it would be with todays 200+ HP 2.0 engines.

Technology promised V8 power from a V6 . It also promised 4cyl . MPG from a V6 . Trucks and SUV dominated the market . Compacts , small trucks and minivan lost out . Short sided image conscious consumers are more to blame than EPA .

It’s really BS, the gas mileage standard shouldn’t matter on the size of a vehicle. It’s probably more about taxes.

First of all I never knew that they did an electric carver. Thank you for this detailed description. Second I ran across what has to be one of the oldest electric Fords from about 1911 maybe as late as 1917. Along with his charging station. It's at the original building of the oldest continuous operating Ford dealership in the United States. Henry Ford himself add a hand and designing the dealership and actually visited this cow pasture dealership. That's not a slam against them it's just a very good description of what you'll find around it. The few people that I knew that had EV 1s. Total of three of them. They like the car. They didn't want to have to give them up. Now my opinion is that the petroleum industry squashed the electric car at that time. One last point. EV CARS ARE FAR FROM CLEAN. Because they've got a bigger environmental organic footprint by the time they arrived at 0 miles on the odometer. Bigger than the entire use of life of a comparable fossil fuel car. Since you like telling people they're wrong. I would say to you SO YOU WOULD BE WRONG

We finally let our 124K mile Town & Country go and shopped for another Mini-van. But in the end, we opted for the Pacifica over the other 3 and the reasons are the Stow-n-go feature. A lot of people don't talk about it. They improved it by the press of a button which brings the front seats forward, then lift the mat which has the carpet attached and pull on the stow-n-go tag, snap the chair in the floor and done! They improved what was already a great system! What people don't talk about is how you can use those bottom areas for snack and drinks or other things when traveling. So it still serves a purpose when the second row seats are up. This, plus the panoramic moonroof and rear entertainment dual screens with an Xbox system is game changing. We didn't have issues with the V6 on the T&C. The engine has existed for over 4 decades and is rock solid. Just make sure you do your transmission flushes every 60K. The auxiliary battery for the start/stop annoying feature seems to be the biggest issue.

Pickups are used as cars and have become a danger to other vehicles due to their high speed, the height of their bumpers, and their rigidity.

I was just thinking about this. The solution is PHEV with a 50 mile battery, full electric drivetrain and a small range extender. The electric rear axle will outperform most gasoline engines and the range extender can be optimized for a specific RPM to cover charging needs at highway speeds.

This is total BS. The reason we don't have them is because manufacturers don't make money on them, or very little. And God knows the CEO's need their bonuses.

The small truck actually worked. An 87 Mazda pu will go 300,000 with regular maintenance. It had a frame not a unibody. The small truck outsold big full size by giant margin.Gas mileage was 20-21 mpg. with std trans.3 more mpg than a full size 2012 Dodge pu. that needed a new trans and motor at 106,000 miles.

I still have and use a Chevy S10 blazer, rear wheel drive vehicle. I needed a set of new tires. The salesperson wondered what I was using the type of tire I was requesting on. Apparently the size is used on trailers now and not the larger trucks that abound.

I recently saw a Dodge Ram 700 on the road. The truck looked new. I couldn't believe it because it was a new compact tittle truck with a large bed. When I did some research it turns out that truck was from Mexico. The owners were probably here on vacation with their vehicle sold in Mexico. I've thought about going down there and picking up one of their trucks, but I'm sure they would somehow stop me from owning it in the United States.

The "Ram 700" is a rebadged Fiat Strada. People from other countries can visit the U.S. with their vehicles, but Americans cannot import vehicles that are less than 25 years old. We are just about to start a new year (2025), so that means Americans will be able to import vehicles made in 2000 or before.

They just didn't have good batteries back then. TRW actually invented something very similar to the "hybrid synergy drive" (split power planetary gearset) in the 60s as well but again, the battery tech was not there.

Hello sir.. USA have very good technology ways in manufacture but unfraternally most of their products are to sell in America, thats why most of the world prefer Asian made cars. Got to change if you want to compete in this market. Thank you.

0:02 Sadly, G.M. was also a leader in "planned obsolescence", using technology to make cars worse instead of better. Almost all auto makers and appliance makers have adapted this philosophy.

My work truck is a 21 Silverado with the turbo 4 and it's right at 48k miles. It's throwing a misfire on cylinder 2 code had a shop verify it's not misfiring. Only happens when sudden excelerating and then back off the throttle. It's also developed what I would call a lifter tick at low idle but if I bump the rpm up very slightly it goes away. The sound is quite annoying. Was thinking about getting a Canyon but if that issue is going to show up it has me thinking twice.

The key word in all this is the word "was"... whatever they did, they did open source it, did not establish any standards or set any conventions. To say they created the modern EV is utter clickbait exaggeration and arbitrary unjustified criteria. This stuff was the "has-been" and none of it matters, but only demostrated to people that they would rather stay with ICE cars which does EV development and progress no favors.

We have traveled the world. and America is the only country where most people buy vehicles that don't match their intended usage. Very few people have a legitimate use for a pickup- Americans buy pickups simply because Americans WANT pickups. Same thing with four wheel drive- only a minute percentage of people actually need four wheel drive. And most oversized tires and "lift kits" actually REDUCE the performance of vehicles- Americans simply buy them because they think it LOOKS cool. I was recruited by a professional racing team for the SCORE Baja 1000 off road race. So I bought a new two wheel drive Ford Ranger XL (no carpets) with the electronic locking rear axle, and built it up to pre-run the course. The rear isn't lifted at all. The front is only a couple of inches higher than stock, as a legitimate function of the extended-travel King front coilovers. It has 285/70R17 (33") all-terrain (not mud) tires. I used it to pre-run the "pro" course of the toughest off road race in the world, without having four wheel drive, and I never got stuck once.
