Well since you asked... that is a mostly reliable engine. They had a tendency to eat timing chain guides and the engine wiring harness insulation was biodegradable, so after about 15 years they just fell apart and needed replaced. Other than that a solid engine. Side note: for 1998 the E class got a mid-cycle refresh and gained the legendary M113 engine that genuinely had no faults. Sure the valve covers always leak oil and 2 spark plugs per cylinder can be annoying, but they are absolutely bullet proof.

The Kia Amanti definitely took this as inspiration for the front.

These engines are reliable and durable. They got rid of biodegradable wire harness by 1995 in the w124. The catch is these cars, like any Mercedes, do not take kindly to improper repairs or throwing parts at it. When it needs repair, it must be done correctly and precisely. If not, it WILL eat ya wallet. But stay up on basic maintenance, it will last. Most issues that do crop up is electrical. The 5 speed transmission plug seal sometimes goes then the oil wicks into the harness causing issues that seem worse than it is. It doesn't cost much and should be replaced at every transmission fluid change anyways. But many people skip these steps and misdiagnose as bad transmission, which is pricey. The engine bay is snugger than the inline 6 or the later V6 but it's not bad at all. No, it's not as roomy under there as a Chevy truck with the old 350. But roomy enough to get around pretty easily. In short, no jury right jobs, and no shortcut glue and tape. Take ya time in repair and do it right and these cars will be relatively problem free for hundreds of thousands of miles with no major mechanical issues. If it has Bose, it is pretty good.

Attractive well made vehicles Jon. And far more compelling compared to the crap that they make today. Then again, most cars were.

Sidenote: when you talk about the concept of "affordable" being "frozen in time" I COMPLETELY AGREE. I see $30,000 now and I recoil in horror. I absolutely can't fathom that much, that's a LUXURY car to me! I had a dealer price out an out the door for a Nissan Versa MANUAL for me at it just conveniently came in right at $19,986...... nope...... TOO MUCH

I've always admired Mercedes vehicles. Definitely an aspirational car to own. If you haven't researched it yet, a quick search says the 91 BMW 7 series had the first 5-speed automatic.

$50,000 in 1997 is the equivalent of $100,000 today. Nice car, aged well, but significantly out of my price range.

Ah, 1997, my favorite year. I was 9. The Phantom Menace was on the horizon, no one knew who Monika Lewinsky was, Columbine hadn't happened yet. The best sci-fi movies were in the theaters, Batman was still a Tim Burton comic movie, bubble cars of the future were everywhere, and industrial metal was mainstream. I really miss the 90s.

Sorry man, I'll disagree. It's been almost all downhill since about 1991. Basically the rise of Grunge was the Herald of the Apocolypse. :)

The era of the video was a period where all real estate sales agents owned or wanted to own one when driving clients out to see listings. Mercedes then projected an image of success. Sadly, not so today. Lexus or Audi holds the mantle of appeal today.

Dad had a slightly later E500 (same generation). While I'd say he liked it, that was his first Benz since the W123, and the last one. Every other car has been a BMW or earlier, a succession of large Audis. My memory, just from listening, was that the Mercedes cost more to buy, more to maintain and they don't offer the same level of engagement the many BMWs did. I tend to agree and more or less also hewed to BMW/Audi, though my brother did branch out once for a C43 AMG, which he still has although it's moved to weekend status now. At least for me, the 3 pointed star seems a bit too much still - even though they've moved down market in more ways than one. While I'd consider an older model for fun, buying one new still feels as though I'm pretending a status that I really don't have......

I think Lexus was using the LS to try to conpete with the S Class and 7 series while being cheaper than both. That might explain why they later came out with the GS400 and 430 to compete with the E class and 5 series.

I really really liked this car when it came out. It looked good, I especially liked the front end, the drivetrain, and it is the right size. It's too bad, it didn't take long to find out that the bean counters and marketing took over to company. The cars RUSTED quickly here in the Midwest, and the overall reliability just disappeared. I don't see these cars on the road anymore unless they are holy and barely running.

I wasn’t really fond of this generation of E Class. I liked the one before but not this one with the circular headlights. (Like you said “ew”😂) My dad had a W203 C Class and I preferred those round headlights. I think Mercedes went down in quality because they threw out their principles of building overbuilt cars. They went for gimmicky fancy feature cars and I think they’ve ruined their reputation. Our Mercedes was the last of the reliable ones. It was pretty average in reliability though.

Some of the last of the good Mercedes. They've been overpriced, poorly made and engineered junk since the early 2000s. They were trending in this direction during this time but hadn't gone full blown crap like they are today. These weren't nearly as sturdy and reliable as their counterparts from 5 or 10 years earlier but they were still solid cars. Also, wasn't it this generation of E class that DaimlerChrysler based the 300/Magnum/Charger/Challenger LX platform cars on?
