I realize you used logic of English foundations years ago but curious how these this combo compares. I just finished AAR prereading and ordered LOE foundations A for my son because I felt like it would be smoother than to use both AAR/AAS?
@TicketToLearning14 күн бұрын
@@themodernhomemaker I think they are both good curriculums. It is easier to use LOE as is if that works well than to try to combine AAS and AAR. I spend a lot of time adapting AAR and AAS. LOE would be a bit more challenging to adapt, and it’s a more expensive program, but I’m confident I could make it work with some adaptations as well.

Hi, I came here from your LOE video and wondering why you’re doing AAR/AAS instead or what made you make your decision?
@TicketToLearning14 күн бұрын
@@themodernhomemaker I’m currently using AAR and AAS with my youngest. I liked LOE, but found it to be a bit overwhelming for my kids and a little less flexible for me to adapt. I think for some kids it can work really well but some of the struggles were: learning all the sounds of a letter at once - that was too overwhelming for my kids. The heavy focus on rules and memorizing them. It also moved quickly and my child I used it with the most has dysgraphia so his skills weren’t lining up with the rate they were moving. It was too fast. I think if I approached it again with more experience, I would likely be able to make it work, but it is quite expensive and I’ve gotten into a good rhythm with AAR and AAS, so I’m just sticking with it. I still think LOE is a solid program though.

@@TicketToLearning I’m worried the handwriting part with be overwhelming too, i figured we can try that part and if it doesn’t click I’ll just drop it and do a workbook style. Thanks so much for your insight!

I see that you read to your kids individually. I feel like I should start doing that with my almost 13. Can you describe what a typical day of reading looks like in your family? I also want to start implementing morning time where I will read aloud from our guest hollow geography curriculum. I’m currently just reading aloud at night to my two youngest with my oldest often joining.
@TicketToLearning4 ай бұрын
It has evolved quite a bit over the years, but currently these are the reading times I have with my kids: Sometimes I start off by reading with my littlest (if she’s really into her play we will save that for later in the day). Then we have our unit study. That’s where I do a family read-aloud. After lunch and some time outside, I read with my middle child, then my oldest. If I haven’t read with my littlest yet, I do that next. We also will read history or science together. I let the boys take turns reading with expression. The key is to be interesting and clear enough for everyone to follow along. It’s actually fun and a great way for me to keep a pulse on their fluency with harder words as the curriculum progresses. That’s all of the reading I do with them. They sometimes have assigned reading and they always have 30 minutes of free reading every day. I hope that’s helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy reading! 📖 📚 😃

We only ended up using it for a few of the literature selections. The writing actually was ok for us. I don’t mind highly modifying and tailoring writing assignments. I know I’m a minority, but it was my favorite part. Many of the books just weren’t working well for us. The main struggles for us were the very wordy instructions and lessons and there wasn’t enough time on one topic for my son to really grasp it. I could see how it would be a good fit for a lot of kids - especially those who pick things up easily by reading instructions, it just wasn’t a great fit for us.
