Nice size layout. You need a lot of space for O gauge. Having long straight sections to stretch out those long trains when they look the best and more proto typical.

Legacy and PS3 (with whistle steam as well) really bring these models to life!! Far more than the old TMCC stuff. Congratulations on your upgrade. I've asked Bruk to upgrade a couple of my 3rd Rail locos but he didn't want to do them, I suppose he was backed up with projects already committed. He has since upgraded a couple more of my Lionel JLC models.

Gary, very sorry to hear about strpped screws and inferior quality control on your very expensive engine. My own opinion is lionel does no quality control of any substance after their product runs are authorized by corporate. Of note, every triplex in that recent lionel diabolical mess was suggested be sent back. Classic business school model on how not to do quality control. .lionel does some really amazing stuff, but it's a real buyer beware and often wildly disappointing. In the last 2 years, I'm surprised when a lionel product arrives without problems. And im learning repairs myself. I buy used often.

Gary, I saw mr muffins run as a fantasy paint scheme that allowed detail to stand out better than if the engine was all black. I am very aware of that kline engine and its colors, not expecting this muffin run to match the kline proper colors. I, like many train guys, usually prefer protypical not fantasy stuff. But, remember, the lionel trainworld exclusive red pacemaker and the recent lionel plasma paint blue purple potter fantasy color engine were both wild sellouts for lionel. We must pay over list price if we want to buy those engines. So, I expect lionel to issue many more fantasy colors. Some look real nice, some not so much at all. It's my opinion that lionel could match colors easily but chooses to not. In the lionel business model, matching colors often makes less money. I am disappointed in lionel business practises at times.

Last summer, I had my K-Line B&A Berk upgraded to PS3 with an MTH smoke unit, what a major improvement in it's performance!! PS3 or Legacy are the ways to go. The old TMCC that was put in these otherwise beautiful models 20 or so years ago, when compared with PS2, PS3 or Legacy is awful. The green on your locomotive is bright but still has a character to it. Unfortunately, I too see where Lionel takes production short cuts such as no tender derail chains or roof hatches which you'd expect to open on a Legacy model and it doesn't. However, since Mike Wolf retired, MTH has done a few cheap shots as well such as the new Shay having a dummy coupler on the front so they could put whistle steam on it. They could have redesigned the board to carry both the whistle steam AND front electro-coupler. Now, we have to be very careful when purchasing a new Lionel or MTH model.

If I'm not mistaken, the only steam locomotive produced by Atlas to date was the USRA steam switcher. I have two of them which I converted to ERR, they are great now, beautiful pieces. Is this locomotive outfitted with Legacy or PS3?

I switched from Lionel to HO, best decision I ever made. The detail in HO is amazing compared to O. I'd rather spend $1500-$2000 on HO brass than another Lionel engine. Lionel's quality has tanked

That looks like the same anti-rust green I used to paint the inside of my WWII airplane models when I was a kid! What did they base that color on? Crazy!

Hmmmmm yeah. I was half expecting the regular Berk sounds to begin with, but I understand why people are complaining. Overall look and new ‘re-tooling’ looks epic, but good lord that paint’s a yikes from me. Sorry to see it’s that bad. Whistle selection’s almost boring in my opinion, but to each his own. Here’s to hoping there’s an improvement down the line.

Nice review Gary. I dont understand how Lionels colors are all " neon" these days. Especially the greens and reds. The nose cone of the legacy dreyfuss looks like an easter egg. Maybe theres no lighting in the warehouse overseas? I also would have thought they would have put more " NYC " tones in the whistle choices. The new VL hudson " sounds" great....but what will they screw up?

Thank you for pointing out the defects and not just going through the features and remarking how great an engine it is. I am hopeful that if more channels highlight the bad QC, Lionel might do something about it. More and more I am turning to after-market products because its a coin flip whether you are purchasing a $1,000 headache from the factory. At least used items have a track record. Hope the engine runs well from here on out.

I've had a Lionel Berk 765 on pre-order at a damn good price. I had to cancel it due to funds needed elsewhere. It broke my heart. But now with many of these Lionel issues, the cancellation was probably meant to be. I also viewed Mr Muffins video on your Berk and his looked darker....?? Thanks for the review !

getting the colors right should be the easy part---they are so focused on fancy electronics and features they forget the basics---unfortunate

I personally would rather get a K-Line A1 berk and upgrade it. It's just easier to deal with.

The color is wrong.

So. If we ‘pretend’ it’s a fantasy version, then I think it’s pretty cool looking. Very striking. Wrong. But striking.

Lionel got the colors wrong on this like everything else they make these days. The green is way too bright, almost like a highlighter green. The K-Line version is more correct. Lionel should have used a slightly darker shade of green. This is completely wrong and unacceptable on all levels.

No wonder there are so many issues. If they were trying to come close to the K line and MTH green they failed miserably ! It looks like an engine for construction areas with the workers wearing their safety vests.
