Anyone who has all their books turned around backwards… needs to rethink giving advice

I hate color. It scares me. Can you do a video on the 60-30-10 ratio/rule on a physical colorwheel please. I need to know how and where to find the colors.

Love your videos! Always very helpful. I'm not a big fan of the "signature" colors like Cinnamon Slate, but I am using colors that go with it. I am loving warm colors that are not primary, but shaded, and more complex, like brown-reds, caramel colors and terra cotta, and olive greens and warm whites. A warm grey like BM Rodeo that is not a cool grey can work if you need to tie in existing grey fixed elements. As far as blues, I am not a fan of Valspar Encore. I think that too primary and intense. I am loving moody blues like Wine dark by F&B, and warmer blues like BM Stained Glass in the 2025 palette. I am also loving dusty blues combined with coral accents.

Painting often requires repainting. I’d certainly think twice about painting the floor.

Pretty much true, but you might not want to! Sometimes replacement is a better option over the long term.

Why do designers always turn books backwards? What's wrong with proudly displaying your books. sometimes the covers are like album covers and are great art pieces. Other art pieces are displayed without turning them backwards. It looks so blah to look at book pages. That is not how we display books in our home. Of course this is my personal opinion.
@welshdesignstudio9 күн бұрын
Mostly so that the books look uniform and don't distract from the decor. Nothing wrong with displaying books, and you're right, there are beautiful covers that would make a great display.

When replacing a thermostat please make sure it is disposed of properly! There are still old, mercury-containing ones out there. I replaced one a few years ago. I made arrangements to take it to our city's hazardous waste drop off site.

If you update, go with high quality materials especially paint. Quality paint from a paint store actually cost less than cheap paint which you have to use twice as much to cover the area.

this video is such a breath of fresh air!! I used to think my house would only look pretty if it looked like the beautiful super expensive homes. However, I have a ranch style home and I'd love to keep many elements from the original design of the house. I have already painted the walls and changed all the light fixtures and wow! what a change that makes! Anyway, thank you for the video and all of your suggestions!

I have painted over tile in a powder room. It is a lot of work to do it right. But anyone who has ever been in a bathroom where the tile was painted over the wrong way, will understand the importance of doing it right. As much as you hate the colour of the tile, badly painted tile is worse. First, it has to be spotless. Then you put on your first coat of primer designed for glass. It is expensive. Wait 24 hours. Sand lightly. Repeat 2 more times. Then you can paint the tile. Finally finish with at least three coats of Varithane. Four is better. It looked great and it held up over the years. However, you can not paint tiles in a shower. It might look good for a short while, but soon you will be dealing with peeling paint and it will be a disaster. You also have the same issues when you paint a floor. I have painted the tiles under my wood stove. Looks great, and as we are not walking on it, staying great looking. However, because the stove had to be move forward because of new rules, we have a small tile section on the main floor in front of the rise. It gets walked on and needs regular touchups to keep it looking good. It had already been. painted over, before we bought the house, prison grey, so I sanded, then went to work. Bathroom floors get even more traffic. And they get wet. Same issue as the shower.

Great video and images for reference! We are about to merge into restoring our home because we found the original wood siding under the ugly vinyl. Any recommendations? Our house faces east. We don’t want the white to look beige but we are also scared of the white looking like a primer. We are looking into Alabaster, White Dove, Snowbound, Simply White

Exciting changes ahead! For an east-facing home, something like Alabaster or White Dove would work great! They both have a nice amount of warmth to them to look inviting, without being too yellow/beige.

New interior doors turned out to be the most impactful upgrade we made to our fixer upper. We also got new doors and drawer fronts for every cabinet in the house and then painted them white. Huge improvement for the money but the sanding and painting was a major chore that took forever to do right. We also put in new windows and outside doors and upgraded very old appliances. Unfortunately we’ve now lived in house over 30 years and it really needs a gut job on the kitchen, baths and flooring.

Way to wreck those classic tile bathrooms and fireplaces. 🤮 Sure, paint some of the wood. Personally, I prefer it, but if it’s all brown walls and floors, break it up. I’m all for updating doors, hardware, and lighting, even painting doors, but some of the “modern” updates will look dated in 5-10 years where the wood, tile, etc. are timeless classics.

I was with you until you said to paint your bathroom tiles, tile floors, and kitchen counter tops! How long will that last without it looking like a disaster? A month? 🤦♀️
@welshdesignstudio9 күн бұрын
Depends on the paint and prep job. It's best for a temporary fix, and I always recommend fully replacing tile and countertops if you can afford to.

Good tip on how to fake wider baseboards. Carpets are foul. First task is to lift and get rid of carpets. Then refinish the hardwood floor with a non degassing finish which does not yellow.

Totally agree. The fake wider skirting board look can also be done to the cornices too. 1.2 m timber panelling in a gloss paint are practical and give a cottage look. Stands up better to toddlers, pets and vacuum cleaners
