So did it live up to the reputation of being the best tasting fig? I am growing figs for the first time and looking forward to trying this one in the near future.

The Encanto sourced Black Madeira is the best dark fig with it's red interior and syrup. It produced a 60g fig the other day that I showed in the latest video. There are honey figs too that are very good. Some people only prefer dark figs. It's a matter of preference. There are some figs that are like having a slice of melon. I recently bought Hative de Argentile which I had once from a cutting I started from UCDavis. It was very unique in that I found it had a spicy note to it also. It was a very slow grower though. When it comes to Black Madeira people seem to want the KK sourced Black Madeira. I think that I read in a forum that it's original source was from Encanto Farms in CA. For me the Encanto farms one is definitely a stronger variety and produced earlier and had larger figs. Black Madeira is considered the King of Figs.

@@NewEnglandgardening Thanks for the feedback on them. I am very curious to try my first Black Madeira. I started my Black Madeira KK in February from a cutting I bought from a fig grower in Rhode Island. I took it down to my family ranch in South Texas in April and it's done well in the Texas heat. It grew two nice 4 ft branches loaded with figs, but they haven't ripened yet. I'm hoping for Thanksgiving some will be ready. I'm very much looking forward to it. I sought the KK because I heard it's vigorous, prolific, and resistant to FMV. I am curious to try the UCD and the Encanto versions, but it sounds like you think the Encanto and the KK might be the same variety.

Prob i'm having with my Toro is that the little spars that pop out to turn the engine aren't popping out then i pull the cord. When you got the rewind housing, did it come with that spinning spar containing thing at the center too?

It was complete. All I had to do was unscrew the old one and replace it with the one I bought on ebay. I was going to take it apart to see if I could fix it but it was just easier to buy a rebuilt one on ebay.

I'm in central Vermont (outside of Montpelier). How far North can your fig trees survive? Summer is shorter here than Champlain Valley or Southern New Hampshire. Thank you!
@NewEnglandgardening13 күн бұрын
I have to bring my fig trees into the cellar or a shed for winter because they will not survive outside winter temps. I have heard of people in New Hampshire having a fig tree survive in the ground in a microclimate in a location like next to a houses foundation on the south facing side with a lot of rocks or a driveway. A hardy Chicago might survive but will die back to the ground and put out new growth in the spring. People use to dig a trench on one side of a fig tree and cut the roots on the other side and push the tree over into the trench and then cover the tree with a tarp and soil and dig it up in the spring.
@JoAnn_00113 күн бұрын
Thank you! I don't mind keeping plants in containers and moving in the mudroom or the garage. I wasn't sure a 3 3.5 month summer was enough for figs to be prolific! I'll try this in the spring. Thank you!

I just tasted my I-258 fig, and it had a delicious raspberry/strawberry jam flavor. Then I saw your video pop up on KZbin! I neglected mine last winter-I was too lazy to bring it inside when there was a frost warning, which ended up killing the main branch. Luckily, some side shoots grew this season and produced fruit, reminding me of what I almost missed out on.

Nice looking figs, my Black Maderia started ripening mid August here in west KY. Three early figs and a lot of small later figs which I didn't expect to ripen. We had two weeks of drought and unfortunately I did not water it except on the weekends. I noticed this morning the rest of the crop is swelling and turning black so maybe more figs by next weekend. I would really like to start another one to plant out in the spring and see if they will winter in our climate. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice. Any idea how long from flowering to picking like that. I find my citrus will flower like any time they feel not like in California where they flower at the same time each year. 7 years later is it still alive and how big?
@NewEnglandgardening29 күн бұрын
I had gotten rid of all my citrus but then bought another Owari Satsuma a couple of years ago from four winds growers. It dropped it's fruit this spring but set a lone fruit this summer which ripens around December I think. If it stays on.

After I put both trees in the ground they got canker and I ended up getting rid of them. They produced great peached the first two years in the containers though. I recently planted two apricot trees and one already had canker and they produced no fruit this year. The neighbor has fruit trees with canker. Once this disease gets on your property and into the soil it will be a problem with stone fruit trees for years. I will probably get rid of the apricot trees too. I've planted some heritage apple trees which are less problematic.

This tree did not survive in MA. They grew great but some disease attacked them when I planted them in the yard. Something would cause the bark to die and it would die back and then try to grow back with new shoots but the last one I had finally died.

So what was the final soil mix on the rehabbed tango? I have an Omari that has been dying back for last month! Thanks🙏🙏🙏
@NewEnglandgardeningАй бұрын
I haven't found the right mix yet. I only have an Owari Satsuma now in a clay pot with a lot of orchid bark in it but it flowered and ended up dropping all the young fruit this year. I need to try another mix. It's difficult because a soil mix that is good for the summer might stay to wet indoors in the winter when I bring it in. Citrus hate wet roots. So the trick is less watering and well draining soil. They can take drying out but die back quickly if the roots stay wet for to long. The leaves turn yellow and drop when over watering.

I decided to be proactive today and give my Ariens deluxe 28 a tuneup. When I was done, I pull the cord to start it up and sure enough, the cord snapped. I watched your video. I was able to fish a wire through first, then I wrapped it around some heavy duty paracord that I had. After some gentle pulling, I got the cord through. It works great. Thanks for your video. This is exactly what I am looking for as I prepare to move from Langstroth to Layens Hives. My biggest concern is how to place the Langstroth frames into the horizontal hive without using the L-shaped conversation boards that attach the Langs to the conversion board with screws. Given that this was 3 years ago, was this a successful method of getting the bees to move onto Layens frames? Thanks very much for this video and any further advice you can provide.

July 5, 2024 Hi Tom. I'm just tuning in to your video. It's very informative. I am in the process of putting together my AmeriLife prefab-greenhouse, so I am seeking all the knowledge that is already out there on the issues, and fixes for these prefab greenhouses. You have provided several ideas that I liked and will take to heart. The use of the 1x2x8 furring strips, and the tap screws to hold in the panels are just a few ideas I most likely will incorporate into my plan. Thanks again.
