where did you buy your seeds? I bought from 2 different places and neither germinated
@NewEnglandgardening18 күн бұрын
I purchased them just off of Ebay. I think a made a point of buying from people that actually had photos of a tree and not a stock photo of a Korean Evodia. I sold most of the trees. The ones I kept did not make it. They did not like being root bound for one thing but the one I put in the ground grew great initially and I had it long enough for it to produce flowers but it started showing signs of some insect or disease in the fall of the first year it flowered. The following spring it had a lot of die back and it put out new shoots from the ground but then they also showed signs of disease. I moved it to another location where it eventually died. The ones I kept in a pot eventually died during the spring. I'm not sure what happened to them. Although not considered an evasive tree they are considered a problem because they are described as weak and are prone to limbs breaking and causing damage. I've seen videos of large trees in Eastern Europe so they seem hardy but for what ever reason they don't like Massachusetts. My bees really liked the flowers it produced so I was disappointed it did not make it.

I don't have any banana plants now but from what I remember they did not get over 10 ft but I grew them in pots too. One year I had them in the ground and dug them up and dragged them into the cellar to try to keep them dormant until spring. I had bananas one year but the stem broke before they ripened. Your suppose to support the stem with a stick to prevent that from happening. It was a fun experiment. It still would be a great challenge to get bananas to grow here in zone 6b. Maybe someday.

@@NewEnglandgardening thank you sir for getting back to me. As old as this video is I wasn't sure if you would. I'm planning on getting into growing bananas here in Northwest Alabama this summer. I planning to build my greenhouse before next winter for the banana plants. I will be growing in pots as well so I can bring them outside in summer and back in for winter but I'm just trying to figure out how tall all these dwarf varieties get so I know how tall to make the greenhouse. Thanks again. Any additional advice on those points or info on other varieties that may work as well would be great. Thanks

Wouldn't they freeze if the soil freezes? I've never grown onions but I've seen the videos of people planting onion sets in the fall for next season. I thought they would freeze in my zone.

Usually in the late spring or early summer. I read once though that if you plant them later you have less of a problem with cucumber beetles which emerge in the early spring.

I fill my 5 gallon gas can completely, but that's because the only non-ethanol gas station close to me is a 60 miles round trip, lol. Also, I use it in my sno-thro, the riding mower, and usually keep 1 gallon separate for 2 cycle stuff. I find if I use the non-ethanol gas in everything that I don't even need to use fuel stabilizer for off-season storage.

I use Dr. Bronners peppermint (a warm mild solution of) castille soap and a toothbrush for stems and leaves. Wash the rim and sides of pot as well as the floor around the pot. Use wormcastings 1/2 deep on top of soil to prevent the runners( microscopic adult stage) from migrating out of soil on to trunk

My plant is yellow all over it.. Do you peel down the yellow peels of the trunk away?
@NewEnglandgardening2 ай бұрын
It's difficult to say without seeing it. It can turn yellow from over watering or pests or disease. You can always remove it from the soil to examine the condition of the bulb or corm. If it's soft and mushy it might be to late. I don't know if it's growing in the ground or it's in a pot or if it saw freezing temperatures. Bananas.org is a good source for information on growing bananas. You will find more information there. You can also post a picture and get some advice on what the problem might be.

How did it how with the apricot? I recently transplanted from one side of the house to another and my roots were about the same size as yours even same size tree. I also cut some branches off to reduce stress. However I think after a week it might not doing well 😞. Did your survive?
@NewEnglandgardening2 ай бұрын
It survived but this year I did not get any flowers or apricots. We had a mild winter last year and a late frost in the spring so I think that killed all the fruit buds. I only got one apple this year too. I have to learn how to prune it too because it has one tall straight leader that I need to cut back and open up the center of the tree. I also planted a Tilton apricot this spring which is growing.

I only have a Owari Satsuma tree now. Citrus is difficult to keep alive in cold climates. I just read that their roots need at least 78F to grow. People tend to over water and citrus hate cold wet roots. Satsumas are hardier than Kumquats. I've had my Satsuma in a clay pot for three years now without any leaf drop. I recently brought it indoors for the winter. I was thinking if I could take one of those small heat mats and wrap it in around the inside of the pot to provide heat to the roots.
@sciencesaves3 ай бұрын
@@NewEnglandgardening good info, thank you. I live in Staten Island (7a) and I purchased a brown select satsuma, meiwa kumquat, Meyers lemon and Sanguinelli blood orange this fall. I have them setup in my basement under 2 decent grow lights with a very light fan. I’m hoping once the spring comes they will start growing quickly once I put them outside in full sun. Now that I read your comment I will put my seeding heat mats under their pots when it starts getting colder this winter. I use citrus tree potting mix and added a small amount of compost, bone meal and worm castings to the surface, then I mulched around 3”. Any red flags you think of or advice based on that info? I only used ChatGPT and KZbin to find these varieties and care info 🤞
