My plant is yellow all over it.. Do you peel down the yellow peels of the trunk away?
@NewEnglandgardening24 күн бұрын
It's difficult to say without seeing it. It can turn yellow from over watering or pests or disease. You can always remove it from the soil to examine the condition of the bulb or corm. If it's soft and mushy it might be to late. I don't know if it's growing in the ground or it's in a pot or if it saw freezing temperatures. Bananas.org is a good source for information on growing bananas. You will find more information there. You can also post a picture and get some advice on what the problem might be.

How did it how with the apricot? I recently transplanted from one side of the house to another and my roots were about the same size as yours even same size tree. I also cut some branches off to reduce stress. However I think after a week it might not doing well 😞. Did your survive?
@NewEnglandgardening28 күн бұрын
It survived but this year I did not get any flowers or apricots. We had a mild winter last year and a late frost in the spring so I think that killed all the fruit buds. I only got one apple this year too. I have to learn how to prune it too because it has one tall straight leader that I need to cut back and open up the center of the tree. I also planted a Tilton apricot this spring which is growing.

I only have a Owari Satsuma tree now. Citrus is difficult to keep alive in cold climates. I just read that their roots need at least 78F to grow. People tend to over water and citrus hate cold wet roots. Satsumas are hardier than Kumquats. I've had my Satsuma in a clay pot for three years now without any leaf drop. I recently brought it indoors for the winter. I was thinking if I could take one of those small heat mats and wrap it in around the inside of the pot to provide heat to the roots.
@sciencesavesАй бұрын
@@NewEnglandgardening good info, thank you. I live in Staten Island (7a) and I purchased a brown select satsuma, meiwa kumquat, Meyers lemon and Sanguinelli blood orange this fall. I have them setup in my basement under 2 decent grow lights with a very light fan. I’m hoping once the spring comes they will start growing quickly once I put them outside in full sun. Now that I read your comment I will put my seeding heat mats under their pots when it starts getting colder this winter. I use citrus tree potting mix and added a small amount of compost, bone meal and worm castings to the surface, then I mulched around 3”. Any red flags you think of or advice based on that info? I only used ChatGPT and KZbin to find these varieties and care info 🤞

The Encanto sourced Black Madeira is the best dark fig with it's red interior and syrup. It produced a 60g fig the other day that I showed in the latest video. There are honey figs too that are very good. Some people only prefer dark figs. It's a matter of preference. There are some figs that are like having a slice of melon. I recently bought Hative de Argentile which I had once from a cutting I started from UCDavis. It was very unique in that I found it had a spicy note to it also. It was a very slow grower though. When it comes to Black Madeira people seem to want the KK sourced Black Madeira. I think that I read in a forum that it's original source was from Encanto Farms in CA. For me the Encanto farms one is definitely a stronger variety and produced earlier and had larger figs. Black Madeira is considered the King of Figs.
@3moiraiАй бұрын
@@NewEnglandgardening Thanks for the feedback on them. I am very curious to try my first Black Madeira. I started my Black Madeira KK in February from a cutting I bought from a fig grower in Rhode Island. I took it down to my family ranch in South Texas in April and it's done well in the Texas heat. It grew two nice 4 ft branches loaded with figs, but they haven't ripened yet. I'm hoping for Thanksgiving some will be ready. I'm very much looking forward to it. I sought the KK because I heard it's vigorous, prolific, and resistant to FMV. I am curious to try the UCD and the Encanto versions, but it sounds like you think the Encanto and the KK might be the same variety.

I'm in central Vermont (outside of Montpelier). How far North can your fig trees survive? Summer is shorter here than Champlain Valley or Southern New Hampshire. Thank you!
@NewEnglandgardening2 ай бұрын
I have to bring my fig trees into the cellar or a shed for winter because they will not survive outside winter temps. I have heard of people in New Hampshire having a fig tree survive in the ground in a microclimate in a location like next to a houses foundation on the south facing side with a lot of rocks or a driveway. A hardy Chicago might survive but will die back to the ground and put out new growth in the spring. People use to dig a trench on one side of a fig tree and cut the roots on the other side and push the tree over into the trench and then cover the tree with a tarp and soil and dig it up in the spring.
@JoAnn_0012 ай бұрын
Thank you! I don't mind keeping plants in containers and moving in the mudroom or the garage. I wasn't sure a 3 3.5 month summer was enough for figs to be prolific! I'll try this in the spring. Thank you!

I just tasted my I-258 fig, and it had a delicious raspberry/strawberry jam flavor. Then I saw your video pop up on KZbin! I neglected mine last winter-I was too lazy to bring it inside when there was a frost warning, which ended up killing the main branch. Luckily, some side shoots grew this season and produced fruit, reminding me of what I almost missed out on.

Nice looking figs, my Black Maderia started ripening mid August here in west KY. Three early figs and a lot of small later figs which I didn't expect to ripen. We had two weeks of drought and unfortunately I did not water it except on the weekends. I noticed this morning the rest of the crop is swelling and turning black so maybe more figs by next weekend. I would really like to start another one to plant out in the spring and see if they will winter in our climate. Thanks for sharing.

After I put both trees in the ground they got canker and I ended up getting rid of them. They produced great peached the first two years in the containers though. I recently planted two apricot trees and one already had canker and they produced no fruit this year. The neighbor has fruit trees with canker. Once this disease gets on your property and into the soil it will be a problem with stone fruit trees for years. I will probably get rid of the apricot trees too. I've planted some heritage apple trees which are less problematic.

So what was the final soil mix on the rehabbed tango? I have an Omari that has been dying back for last month! Thanks🙏🙏🙏
@NewEnglandgardening2 ай бұрын
I haven't found the right mix yet. I only have an Owari Satsuma now in a clay pot with a lot of orchid bark in it but it flowered and ended up dropping all the young fruit this year. I need to try another mix. It's difficult because a soil mix that is good for the summer might stay to wet indoors in the winter when I bring it in. Citrus hate wet roots. So the trick is less watering and well draining soil. They can take drying out but die back quickly if the roots stay wet for to long. The leaves turn yellow and drop when over watering.
