In a way, this dub perfectly encapsulates American society and culture, even if it is now almost 20 years old! The references to celebrities, political christianity, and pop culture are very relatable to me as an American, and is in my opinion what makes the show so great! Yes in some cases it is “dated”, but i personally am not bothered by that, and if anything it makes me feel “smarter” for knowing some of the political and pop culture references. Also how does it feel to have people born during the creation of this dub now comment and tell you how much they love the dub? The 2000s don’t feel that long ago, and yet!

@ It’s basically one of the many Fate entries and probably one of the most concerning ones. It has a pretty damn good story later down the road, but there are some scenes that make you think “this shit’s gonna put me on some kind of watchlist.” If anything, people keep recommending the manga over the anime because the anime takes the “loli fanservice” and turns it up to 11 for some reason.

So, fundoshi for men and koshimaki for women were the primary underwear styles in japan before WW2. Because Japan was going trough hard times after WW2, the only women who could afford Western style underwear were prostitutes, mainly serving American occupiers. And just like that, Western style female underwear was oversexualised.

What I heard a long time ago, is that there are pantie vending machines in Japan ! Some of them are even used and old woman would sell underwear to men. I think it's really gross I don't get it either? I found that out by watching Andrew zimmern's bizarre food. He went to Japan twice. I believe some J vloggers on here talk about it too. Also little kids do actually cuss in Japan. It's completely different over there. If I find anything I will message you. It's so gross!
@theothertonydutch23 күн бұрын
Don't get borderline CP confused with general fetishes, that's a slippery slope. Some people pay their way through college by selling their used underwear to horny guys on the internet. Ain't no real shame in that.
@SaiyanGamer9523 күн бұрын
Funny thing about the vending machine one; there were panty vending machines for a very brief while, but were shut down before long, due to the owner of the vending machine needling a license to sell them. And as for swear words... I'm not completely sure one way or the other. From what I could find, they don't really swear any more than most other countries. Hell, in the UK, "damn" and "hell" aren't considered swears.
@RoseC-l8m23 күн бұрын
@SaiyanGamer95 these were things I found out a long time ago of course things can change. I just added the swearing part in there. Just a showcase that things are a bit different over there. But I still love the food and the culture. I don't watch anime anymore but Steven is a good friend. So I always liked and leave a comment.
@tona4x723 күн бұрын
from what I heard, underwear wasn't much of a concept for most of japan's history, so when it was introduced, it was looked at as fancy lingerie, and that kind of stuck culturally.

Steven i have come with a new fact for you! Not ghost stories related but for another show you’ve worked on! was looking through your IMDB and said worked on Gilgamesh, i know this because I’m actually a fan of the original mangaka, Shotaro Ishinomori, he was the assistant to the creator of Astro boy, and later went on to make Cyborg 009, android kiakider, and 009-1 if those anime art styles couldn’t tell you he was from that 60’s era lol, also created kamen rider and super Sentai (power rangers) has a museum in japan, so yeah you worked on a legacy manga artists stuff, technically, adaptation is loose, original manga is from the 70’s and has that art style cyborg 009, as far as i can tell story nearly identical it’s just an older manga, although i may be completely wrong, the version you worked on was clearly made not to capitalize more fit in with those style of anime coming out, i’m sure Y’know the ones, ergo proxy, serial experiments lain, Texhnolyze, Haibane renmei, the philosophical, grey, usually nihilistic anime boom as i like to call it, they did this for another manga of his Skull man, but were you ever aware of that? I thought it was cool, lol! You seemed to really enjoy doing a more faithful drama anime like that!
@STE7ENFOSTERАй бұрын
I DO enjoy working more faithfully with dramas like that. Comedy is so perspective, it's a crap shoot. But the dramas seem to need so little assistance because they're so amazing on their own.
@elijahguest1885Ай бұрын
@@STE7ENFOSTER i agree, and it’s fascinating to hear that from you, since your so much more well known for your liberal approach, when given Gilgamesh, were you ever made aware that such a Massive, important manga artist had made it? Or was it a ghost stories type situation? I think its quite odd as I’ve said, you got some massive franchises under your dubbing belt, the 2013 Harlock of course, which I haven’t seen, But fyi, the original harlock 1970’s harlock tv series and the film Arcadia of my youth are some of my favorite anime Period, and it says you did some of the Golgo 13 anime tho again I could be wrong, which is is the longest running manga ever made 1967-present. 1,500 chapters long, published weekly, that’s insane! What i adore about researching Japanese anime and even dubbing history, is it all connects in someway or another in Japan you can look at stuff from years back and people offshoot into independent artists lots of whom knew each other , anime dubbing is the same way, albeit now it’s much much more limited to the same 50 voice actors, and basically the same performances over and over and over again, my gripes with localization aside the thing i do admire is the performances are much more varied and colorful (Hey! Another show you worked on!) then most dubs of today.
