I only stumbled across this video after reading through comments & seeing a response you posted to someone else. I thought to myself "why does this comment sound like he was involved with this?" only to find out it was you! But since this video currently doesn't have many views, I feel like I'm going to end up spending waaaaay too much time correcting the myths/misconceptions/lies regarding the show in other videos now 🤣 Any video I watch that discusses Ghost Stories & gets the info wrong, don't worry, I'll be there referring them back to you & setting the record straight... one comment at a time! Lol anyway, great video. Really enjoyed hearing everything you had to say.

Look at the ace detective! So glad you found me, Corey! And thank you for getting the word out about the video. I'm just doing this for everybody who thought Ghost Stories was funny. But the "fantasy goal" is to get so many fucking views that they'll do a 20-year later second season of Ghost Stories and we'll do an encore redub of that Japanese original. I'd come out of retirement for that. 😆

In a way, this dub perfectly encapsulates American society and culture, even if it is now almost 20 years old! The references to celebrities, political christianity, and pop culture are very relatable to me as an American, and is in my opinion what makes the show so great! Yes in some cases it is “dated”, but i personally am not bothered by that, and if anything it makes me feel “smarter” for knowing some of the political and pop culture references. Also how does it feel to have people born during the creation of this dub now comment and tell you how much they love the dub? The 2000s don’t feel that long ago, and yet!

Thank you for the Brilliant video Ste7en~ The jig is up! The truth is out! The story of the greatest dub of all time finally sees the light of day... And what a reveal it is Your writing genius was way undersold, The final rumor was something that while cool to believe, as you said made very little sense in practice (Brilliant way to show off how crazy it would be in reality lol) From the sounds of it you managed to make some groundbreaking improvements in terms of the on the fly script change too It's always lovely to see how wholesome fans of the Ghost Stories Dub are, We all need a break from being serious sometimes and a good laugh can do wonders for the soul, I'm really glad that the community made a difference in your life and hopefully lots more in the future I didn't know about the book (Unless I forgot, In which case my head is more empty than I thought)but I don't take much convincing, It's coming this Wednesday lol But one day I'll get that thing signed, That's the price of making a sale 👌 Thank you for all your hard work, It's always nice to see you back again, Keep it up m(_ _)m I hope your having a lovely day, Have a wonderful start to your week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)7 Also hope you got over the rona and didn't get hit with it too bad, See you next time for some more awesome content~

Gosh, thank you SO much for the specifics! TRULY. I worked really hard on that visual "example" and I even after it was uploaded, I wondered if it was gonna work or make sense. So I'm SUPER glad to hear it summed up the situation. And now that I think about it, I don't know if that one clip made the final cut, but the biggest argument for it not being adlibbed by the cast is What kind of a dickhead director would a guy have to be for putting that kinda pressure on people?! "I know you don't know anything about my show, cast, but here, write it for me." If someone woulda said that to me, I'd have walked outta that booth before the douchebag said, "Recording." And let's talk about that signature! message me on social or email me.

Lololol. Thank you very much, Watakro. And yes, that cast was beyond brilliant. I can’t count all the times my engineer and I were doubled over laughing at their reads. And that’s what’s WAY cool about reading all the lovely comments on all the videos. Cuz you guys will say something like “the way Brittney’s voice cracks on the word Black” or how it sounds like Marcy’s trying not to laugh while she dies the letter speech cuz I go like “Yes! yes! That’s exactly what I get out of it too!!” It’s just always fun to have somebody confirm things, ya know? Like I’m not so weird for digging the way they said this certain word, it’s like almost universal.

Thank YOU for being so patient! I won't lie, it took me like 8 attempts at shooting it (poor crew) and editing it (poor editor) and script revisions (poor me). As is also confessed in the video, I mistook simple pride in myself and my gifts/talents for unchecked vanity and a better-than-everybody-else attitude. So much so that I near totally missed out on 30 years of good vibes and confidence-building. And just the sheer joy you feel after a job well done. And I don't think I'm alone in this. In case I don't do a video about it, lemme just say it here: If you've worked hard and you've given it your all, BE PROUD, not just of the job, but of YOURSELF. If you're not, if you pooh-pooh away compliments or pats on the back or attaboys, you not only insult those who are giving you such kindnesses but you cheat yourself out of realizing and acknowledging your own...and I am being careful with this word...greatness. Because we are ALL capable of, YES! GREAT THINGS. Of course, your gifts came from the loving God who made you. But it was YOU who sharpened those gifts, worked your ass off to improve them, and went through all the blood, sweat, and tears to make the most of them. I'm paraphrasing, but, "God looked upon all He had made and He was well pleased." There's nothing wrong with appraising your accomplishments fairly. I believe that if you start gettin' too big for your britches, you'll realize it. Or someone who loves you will! lol And too often we err on the other side. We're often lousy at taking credit for our goodness, but boy do we seem to like beating ourselves up over ever mistake and spending LOTS of time rehashing our fuckups. That must break God's heart. I know if I saw my kid doing that, it would break mine.

You're the ONLY one to comment on it so THANK YOU. It was kind of a dawning moment when I was recording and I was like, "Shouldn't I have a Black ghost in here? That'd be fair. And FUNNY." My big dilemma was should I have pointed it out or not? I think it would have been much cooler if people kinda noticed it on their own, but with how the lights change in each episode, I wasn't sure if people would ever cotton to it being Black. And both ghosts get along really well.

The ghost stories dub is undeniably a cult classic, there are some jokes which are celebrity themed which become dated but the vast majority are not and are miles funnier than most comedies today. Its interesting to know you were almost wholly responsible for writing every line, but you used improv when writing. Out of interest, what tv shows or comedians would you say inspired you? Also, do you have a favourite episode of GS you're most proud of?

You are so nice, JW. And I have something coming up that will take the admittedly WAY dated stuff and turn it into a (hopefully) fun positive. As for that inspiration question: you've just given me a BRILLIANT idea for a video. One, I would LOVE to be able to get to honor those people by spending time to see exactly what about their work DID impress me so. And two, give you guys the thrill of recognizing the examples or getting turned on to stuff you might not have been aware of. It's THIS kinda shit that I never expected to have happen on the channel. That it wouldn't be just a Me Fest, but that it would be a conversation. One that introduced me to and allowed me to get to know you beautiful people better.

Steven I have a serious question. I’m in no way saying your an awful man, but there’s things that are odd, Ghost stories already had an Ova before the television series, two live action films as well, There’s fan sites and Twitter accounts still active from Japan, I’ve spoken with Japanese friends who read the children’s novels and had no clue this approach was taken. There’s official ratings from the magazine Animage that said it competed well with at least pokemon and doraemon, and what confuses me most you have dubbed films by much more acclaimed directors as far as I know you did work on grave of the fireflies and 5 cm per second? You’ve worked on much more important franchises with major impacts like Harlock and golgo 13 Yet you still insist this is how you should be remembered this is the magnum opus of your entire career. Why? I don’t find it offensive to be asking all this, an again I don’t know if you were lied to or not and I know from reading your comments under mercury falcons video your very easily offended, but this is genuinely coming from a fan of anime who has watched numerous dubs, new and old including yours, why do you choose to be remembered this way? Have you indirectly or not led to the entire localization vs ai debate fiasco we face today? These are question people will be genuinely be asking.

Another thing I noticed is you there’s lots of jokes at other expense like there’s lots of jokes about hating Jews? Why is that? I’m not accusing you of anti semitisim as I said you seem like a nice guy, but is that not really really poor taste? I mean it’s not like South Park where there’s a sort of commentary or the joke is the child is ignorant the joke is literally “this character is Jewish we hate on him laugh.” It genuinely does not make any sense.
@UsernameUsername0000
@UsernameUsername0000 6 ай бұрын
@@elijahguest1885 Leo wasn’t really the butt of any poor taste joke that I can recall. If anything, the dub portrays him as a victim of hate crime; no jab at the Jewish religion at all. Some other demographics (dyslexia, Islam, Christianity, rednecks) got much more severe jokes, lol. Regardless, the show pretty much satirized every demographic known to man - that’s why it’s so funny. It would be kind of silly, imo, to make it something more serious or sinister than it is. They’re fictional characters, in fictional settings, and, if I’m correct, some of the crew were part of the demographics that the show made fun of the most.
@elijahguest1885
@elijahguest1885 5 ай бұрын
KZbin won’t show me your comment on my account so I have to respond this way. Ghost stories is the farthest from satire you can get. It’s like hazbin hotel offensive for the sake of offensive. Would someone who was told he could do free rein with a failed japanese property which by all japanese information we have access to is false besides Steven saying take my word for it. Which I won’t. Unless the actual author of the property says something which is unlikely because he’s a novelist. Would people who were basically sleepwalking through a project they think failed. Really care about the plight of minorities in America to satirize it? Clearly not I’m not saying they don’t. But a satire in a children’s comedy anime? Shin Chan did something like that and got the license pulled after the author died for going overboard with it. This is the conclusion. I’ve come too from researching the japanese IP.
@elijahguest1885
@elijahguest1885 5 ай бұрын
If Steven truly believes the IP failed that’s his business and based on how he speaks of it her clearly doesn’t care either way. But I don’t think he should be conducting this channel as if he CREATED this series or improved upon it to create a cult classic. Because based on japanese friends I’ve talked too who read the children’s novels it was already one in Japan to begin with. However it did fail in other Asian markets so that could be why they were more lax with localization but Japan has no ideas the lengths Steven took it. I think his dubs work best when the material is inherently absurd and can bring that out colorful and cromartie highschool being the most obvious examples.
