Ok, I finally had the time to 'block' to listen to one of these long form videos. Lot's of good stuff. However, I pulled the plug at 1:15:53. Why? Advertising, sponsors, book plugs, etc. I get it. No, long form videos without them. But like the new NFL or the new NBA this format is not for me. The books are great. The short form videos are good. But, I am going to pass on this format.

I've watched my husband live like this for nearly 30 years, and now our son is building a meaningful, beautiful life like his dad and grandfather did. It all adds up to deep joy and satisfaction not only for themselves, but their families. Loved how you laid it out and named the parts. They did it because their fathers modeled it. What treasure.

There's good in this video. However I'll just add another cause of this problem with low motivation. Sometimes it can be lowered dopamine resulting from immune inflammation in the brain (ask me how I know😀) that leads to this problem with motivation. There has been quite a bit of research into this phenomenon and the experts refer to it as "sickness behaviour syndrome." Some people are prone to experiencing depression and/or loss of motivation while sick or undergoing immune stimulation. One of the ways in which they study this is by giving interferon to mice and then studying their "sickness behaviour." Various cytokines are implicated and some of the downstream effects lower serotonin and dopamine in sensitive individuals. Unfortunately chronic infections and problems with certain toxins can lead to a protracted version of this phenomenon. Long Covid and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome may be exactly this sort of thing. It's very tough stuff. It's so severe for some that interferon therapy for certain infections or cancer is not an option.

Cal Newport, You are such a good speaker-please read the Bible and study it for 4 months then do a couple of dozen 2 hour videos on why the Bible is right.

Yes, shorter videos please, like you say attention deficit and seeing 1hour feels impossible. Pls do a video on whether one can develop adhd due to excessive screen time/stress/perfectionism

You, Sir, are a genius! I am linking this video to my very successful wife who nonetheless struggles with this type of thing right now. I stumbled upon that "long term goal" method back when I was 15, and that is the single biggest factor in helping me excel academically, professionally, and build the excellent life and family I have today.

In classical education you would never rely on just one source of information, e.g. for daily information, just the New York Times but on two or three sources, with different or opposing views, then confront those sources and build your own thinking from there.

I saw somewhere that when you have troubles to sleep, to start saying in your mind random unrelated words till you felt sleep. It works wonders for me so I hope it helps you. That and to wait 3 hours before my last meal to go to sleep.

Found you, now I am doing a deep dive into your videos and books, while at the same time keeping my productivity up. One of your recommendations was to find an expert, and ask for the story of their journey, not their advise. Well, that is what I am doing. I'm looking forward to getting to know your story, Cal. Love the books and videos, keep them coming.

Working from home I always had my work computer right next to my main computer where I would spend a lot of time listening to music, researching things, or playing video games. Inevitably, you get distracted or demotivated to work with your entertainment system sitting right there. What helped me was plugging in my personal PC monitor into my work docking station during the day, thus rendering my personal machine useless for those 8 hours. My work is pretty regulated, our machines are locked down, have to access everything via VPN, and I wouldn't do anything "personal" related on that machine. Essentially, I created an ecosystem where I have to work or I have nothing to do. Some days I'm not motivated to do the work, but I find when there's no other options available to me, I just get started on things and build up the momentum, and all of the sudden I'm deep in the work within 30-minutes or so and very focused.

I was trying to use my lunch break to go into a forest and bike ride. Doesn't have to be a full hour but that boosted my dopamine while working from home. I can see fish and birds and it's great. The downside could be mosquitoes and cicada noise but I can muscle through the stings.

I would have to disagree. I'm 48 now and have worked in education most of my life. Skills, I would argue, are usually rooted in interest. It's interest usually that leads to skills in the first place. Why should teenagers, for example, sign up for sports, activities, or classes that they have absolutely no interest in? What's in demand of course matters, but if a young adult has absolutely no interest (and therefore likely mediocre skills) in that area, they are likely to become not only bored, but bitter and frustrated. It's complicated-- everyone has different life and work experiences. From my experience and from talking to lots of people about their careers, a blend of passion and practicality is what works best-- not all one way or the other. No magic, one size fits all formula applies for all people. I would advise those half my age to find a balance in their work. I would say 1) first find out what skills and interests you have 2) try to match those with the needs/demands of the world.

How does this work for ADHD. Pre-pandemic I had issues but not as bad as they are now and that further increased my anxiety. I hate it and I am completely stuck in fight/flight/freeze - procrastination state - even with having taken proper medications. What do you recommend for someone like me. 🙂?

Great take away: For any field of endeavor, do not ask for an experts advise, ask for their story. You are looking for a roadmap; not a true, but too vague to be useful sound bite.

Your paraphrase of my phone conversation wasn't completely accurate. If the goal is to keep me off of social media, then I shouldn't have to hear my words reflected back at me. This is why I don't trust the intentions of KZbinrs. I am glad that your discipline has helped you to do interesting things, but that doesn't mean that it was a good move on your part to monitor and judge someone else. You have interesting content, but I will never put you on a pedestal.

I think Cal is part of the problem that Byung-Chul Han presents in "The Burnout Society". He is another actor in the neoliberal system that wants us to be productive and achieve things, and to put that burden on us at all costs. He wants us to "hustle gently", but to hustle anyways. I find ironic (and disgusting, honestly) that Cal is using the book title to clickbait us into his sales podcast (yes, if you didn't notice, the podcast is basically a way to promote his books and courses, that's all), but then, this is the speciality of the neoliberal system, to eat up it's critics and use them to further advance the "cause". Did you even read the book you are citing in the tile, Cal? Do you know that book is talking also about you?

Talking about a book that I resonated with the author's life and not just their techniques: The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer. As i'm studying humility, flow, and waiting on God, here is an apparent non-Christian who was rewarded throughout his life in this approach. I solidifies God's promises to all people.
