I'm doing this unintentionally, or intentionally depending on how you look at it. I'm not trying to disappear, but I am avoiding the upkeep of an online persona so that I can grow my real self rather than my ego. Social media is very time consuming, it's not a real depiction of me, it encourages pursuing highlight moments rather than long term accomplishments, and even with the purest intentions it makes my more narcissistic and opinionated.

Haven't watched the video but I'll just say that I disappeared when lockdown first happened. Ghosted all my friends and deleted my entire online presence with zero explanation initially as somewhat of a joke but then I just went with it because I became a new person. I have new social media accounts but they're for hobbies and interests, not for socializing. Haven't met my old friends in almost 5 years and don't intend on meeting them at all. They were bad influences anyway. But it does mean I need to go incognito when I'm out and about in the city (only in venues and times where I have a chance of bumping into them) to avoid awkward encounters. I don't mind because I don't intend on staying in this city for long and I find going around with a "disguise" (glasses, cap, mask) fun and humorous, but doing a "hard" disappearance like I did means any encounter is bound to be awkward and so I try my best to not be seen. It might not suit your personality or circumstances so perhaps a "softer", more gradual disappearance is what you should consider.

Disconnecting from social media is not disappearing. It’s shocking that some people live as if it is.

The dissapear culture didn't start with online culture. The origin of this obviously comes from monks but it also became a thing amongst people who wanted to learn a specific skill, especially learning a musical instrument. It comes from Robert Johnson vanishing then returning as an amazing guitar player. Disappearing to become better is a common trope for people in their 20s especially. I had to do it socially as I was a joke amongst my friends so I sought out 'better' people.

I am gonna be honest, the shift of content is a little confusing. Targeting "young men" is 1. misleading 2. Don't women count for this content? We are half of the population after all. Please don't go down the routine of the whole toxic manosphere. We've got enough white men talking about that already.
@biegebythesea6775Күн бұрын
Cal isn't a toxic man (far from it) but I'm guessing most of his new viewers are male (as opposed to those of us who followed him decades back) so he is focused on that. He (like most people who make content) is probably deeply unaware that most 'hot topics' are actually from the manosphere.
