You might not know this, but the song is autobiographical. It tells the tale of their downward spiral after becoming addicted to heroin (Mr. Brownstone), which has a double entendre meaning. It refers to the color of the drug, but is also refers to the old brown apartments (Brownstones, as they are known) in NY City where you can score heroin and inject it. Some of the members of GNR were heavily involved in heroin addiction, including Slash and drummer Steven Adler, and Adler was eventually kicked out of the band for that reason (Slash was not, as he eventually got clean and sober).

This is from a show in Germany, late 70s. The entire set is fantastic. Mark felt that they “flubbed” this track, and so repeated it at the end of the show “to get it right.” We didn’t mind either one, frankly. 😊
