Telling scene. Lived in the South most of my life. Hasnt changed much, at least in the rural areas. What gets me is that these racist hillbillies don't get that it isnt the POC keeping them down, it's their gentrified puppet masters that have mansions lining every main street in the small towns. The people that rig the system so that all the money goes to them and nip the system so the poor whites see themselves in competition with the POC, not being oppressed by the rich whites, for jobs, land, opportunities, schools, healthcare you name it. And no, I am not suggesting communism, just REAL capitalism where EVERYONE gets a shot

Mississippi Burning maybe a fictional depiction of the events in Philadelphia Miss. In 1964. That said his story about his father killing the black Farmer's Mule sounds very believable.

"Where does it come from? All this hatred?" I once heard someone say about people is that "Ten percent of people are good. Ten percent of people are evil. And, the remaining eighty percent depends on the circumstances."

How many times do you have to get jumped by people who annoy you before you learn to watch out? Well, you could also just learn from other people's mistakes. Bottom line is, never relax.

Yes, it was frequently the poor white man that hated his black neighbor most. See To Kill a Mockingbird.

The quote in this scene is timeless and can be applied to so many modern day problems. The UK is currently being burnt down by the far-right. A black UK born 17 year old of African heritage murdered 3 little girls and injured countless others sparking an uprising from the British white community, mainly the working classes. They’ve rioted in almost every major town and city. Burning out police cars, trying to burn down mosques, pulling foreigners out their cars and setting upon them, attacking police officers and causing countless serious injuries whilst flying the English flag. Some even Nazi saluting. The British far-right are saying it’s in response to the murders of the British young girls by another “foreign invader”. But in reality, the real reason is exactly what is quoted in this video. The white British working classes have been downtrodden for so many years. Their lives are shit, many are uneducated, they have little job opportunities, little to no money and drink heavily to cope. Their hearts are full of hate because their lives are basically worthless in the governments eyes and they don’t know where to channel that anger. So they aim it towards their foreign neighbour, or the black man who lives down the street. Because they feel the same way as his daddy. “If you ain’t better than a ****** who are you better than.” Very sad. Hate only causes more hate.

This film mistakenly makes the FBI look pro-civil rights - they were the opposite. Many local agents were openly racist and pro-Klan, as was Director Hoover, who tried destroying King and was connected to his assassination.

But it truthfully illustrates the southern white attitude of the FBI or anyone who would dare tell them how to order their community. Pro law and order with the police at the top of the heap or near as enforcers of the status quo - unless the police come from "the government," in which case that sector of the greater "law and order" are basically traitors to their race and subsequently the community, or the community which matters - not the one living on the other side of the tracks and better keep in at night.

Racial differences are exploited to divide the American working class. Always have been, and always will be so long as 1% of people own more than 99% of the wealth.

"An old man was just so full of hate that he didn't know that bein' poor was what was killin' him." This is one of the most important conversaions of the whole movie. And the line just before that: "If you ain't even better than a n-----, son, then who are you better than?" Such a concise summation of one of the root attitudes of racism. It's amazing how much is attached to everyone's own self image, and fascinating how (especially in a racially-based attitude such as this) the hate is not toward someone with a different skin color, but is actually self-hatred. Whoever wrote this part of the script had profound insight.

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th President of the United States
